Hi All, I mentioned the other day about my good friend's equipment that got
stolen in a break-in. Anyway, he lost his da-20, his entire collection of
100 dats, the rest of his stereo (~$2500), and quite possibly the worlds
largest bubbler. Unfortunately, he has no serial numbers for his equipment
;-(. I was thinking about what could be done to help rebuild his
collection, and was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to either donate
a tape or two, or allow me to send you b&p for him. of course CD-Rs are
welcome as well
Those kind enough to help out can send tapes to:
John Finochietti
1873 Merrimac Rd.
Blacksburg, VA, 24060
Thanks ever so much,
Jamie
also, I have the following equipment for sale in order to fund my soon-to
be-built house. All offers considered...
Once again, sorry for the cross-postage....

Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 17:19:54 -0400
Hi, I have a friend who recently purchased a Sony M1 deck. I was wondering
if any of you have found a powering solution for taping concerts. Is there a
battery pack that any of you have built? The Eco Charge batt. systems are a
little too expensive. Also, are there any condensor mics other than an AKG
C1000S and Shure VP-88 that run off of phantom power through a batt. located
inside the mic? If not, what kind of units can supply phantom power to a
pair of mics? I am aware of the Zeifro In-Box. Has anyone had any
experiences with these? Feel free to email me privately.
Thanks, Pete

Hey now...
Just to make sure, have you checked the timer mode to confirm that both decks
are showing Absolute time? I occasionally have the same concern until I check
and notice that one of the decks somehow got switched to a different timer
mode....upon switching back to A-Time the decks are not running at different
speeds at all. Just a thought....

I have (2) Otari DTR-8S's. The one that I am using solely for recording was
bought in the 2nd week of November from the DAT Store as a floor model in their
Thanksgiving sale. Since then it has around 100 hours on it. Tonight as I was
dubbing a tape I noticed that the record deck was running faster than the play
deck. It sems to be running about 30 seconds faster roughly every 30
minutes.<<<<<

"my mic's power supply has a stereo 1/8" out that i usually just run into the
line in on my D8, how would i run it into the SBM? i notice there is one mic
in that sias "plug in power" and two other 1/4" ones, please help me here"
To go line in to the SBM1 you need RCA inputs. Since you go line in to the D8
and get good levels you will be able to do the same with the SBM1 under similar
conditions(electrically, line in of D7/8, D100, M1 and probably even the older
D3 are equivalent). Therefore don't mess with the 1/8" stereo input or the 1/4"
dual inputs, they route the signal through the built in mic preamp. Instead go
to radio shack and get a mini 1/8"-mini 1/8"(IE female-female) coupler. Along
with that you need a basic stereo mini>RCA cable. Radio Shack makes both in
gold plated versions. These two items will enable you to go RCA line in to the
SBM1. If for whatever reason you insist on going into the 1/8" stereo input
which routes the signal through the built in mic preamp, I would recomend an
attenuator (6 or 10dB)in the form of a 1/8">1/8" stereo male/female cable(to
avoid brickwalling at a loud show). Doing this *and* simultaneously using the
built in 20dB pad of the SBM1will work but I would still go LINE IN for best
sonic results.

Hey!
I am a bit suprised that I haven't gotten any responses to my post last
week about digital I/O on motherboards. (ASUS sells a board, P5A and
P5A-B, which optionally includes an onboard "sound card" which includes
SPDIF. The PDF user manual goes into some detail about it.) Seems like
the ideal solution if you are a build-from-scratch type and you want to
get SPDIF i/o for free! (The motherboard is priced around $100, typical
cost).
Anyway, I plan to build a new computer sometime in the next few months.
If I haven't heard from anyone, I'll probably give it a whack. I'll get
any results back you y'all...

Actually, this is what I should have said in the first couple of lines

condition it).

I recently mastered a CD from DAT of a TOO show where someone was setting off
firecrackers nearby. The taper was good enough to have set the levels low
enough that the pops were 12db higher than the loudest music. This is a good
example of a place that you can get 4 times the music level by squishing.
But why stop there. If your peak is from one major drum smack by Mickey and
squishing the one smack could double your output power......that's not much of
a sacrifice. These things are much easier to gauge when viewed graphically in
a program like Sound Forge. You can also custum tailor the compression curve
to the material.
Louder IS better!

Sounds fine. The only trouble I can see is that from what I've seen
DDS I tapes are pretty cheap whereas DDS 2 are considerably more
expensive.
One related thing occurs to me: there are several manufacturers now
producing high density DATs (24 bit, 96kHz, whatever.) I wonder why
they don't use DDS2, as it would seem ideal for the purpose.

I have approx 16 DATs that I made the first year I got my DAT (1991) that
still play with ZERO errors on my DA20. At that time I was using Denon audio
grade tape ($10 ea!) made by ???. This includes the tape I recorded at CBGB
when my band played and then I used that tape to make my own Demo tapes (I
must have played that tape 500 times). It still plays fine.
AFAIK I have never had a DAT tape go bad, but I have had 2 DAT tapes break
(a Denon and a Maxell audio grade) over the past 8 years.

Hi
Ive got a DTC77ES that has an intermittent fault. Occasionally
when in monitor mode (its a 4head) a clicking noise starts - its present on
the meters and outputs and remains even if I play the tape. The only thing
that stops it is removing one of the phono inputs. It seems like its
oscillating or something.
Any ideas or experience of this?
