He said that you shouldn't need a digital soundcard if you have an iMac or a PC with USB ports b/c these ports are fast enough to support it. The next step is to get the DATport by Opcode for the iMac. Just my $.02... :-) Matt Gaumer

From: Robert Moose <rmoose@mitre.org> Subject: ebay: please be careful re. bootleg complaints Reply-To: rmoose@gateway.mitre.org Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 20:24:09 -0500 (EST) I believe that complaining to ebay about bootleg sales is acceptable if one feels the moral need to do so, but please be sure it's a bootleg before you do. I mention this because I was on the receiving end of a wrongful complaint. I was auctioning a legit promo CD, Indigo Girls: Reverse 1 - Live, which is one of the most highly sought after Indigo Girls CD rarities. Some concerned citizen, upon seeing "Live," complained to ebay that I was auctioning a bootleg. I received a threating letter from ebay that went as far as to warn me about the possible legal action that could be taken against me by the appropriate authorities. Ebay eventually apologized, but the ordeal caused me quite a bit of concern. I'm guessing that all/most of us here have no problem differentiating between bootlegs and non-bootlegs, but my experience shows by example that the danger of incidents like this does exist. So please be careful. Note: This post is not intended to in any way cast doubt or call into question the intent or validity of the previous posts on this subject. I'm just trying to do what little I can to help prevent occurances of the type of experience I had. Another note: One of the messages from ebay suggested that I should ammend my ad to include a phrase like "Not a bootleg," even though the original ad, I think, sounded like it was describing a legal CD, including the name of the label and the matrix number. IMO, not surprisingly, the ebay person who wrote to me knew little about collecting musical recordings and even less about the Indigo Girls. Bob

Generally, the tapes I listen to are the ones that are the oldest in my collection or of a cheaper brand (any that hasn't yet screwed up one of my decks) These are my "listen" tapes I also keep backups on KAO gold, I use these for taping and to replace DATs that have degraded in quality. These are my "backups" I keep a final set backed up on KAO in a safety deposit box (yes, I am THAT paranoid!) I update this set once a year, so I will loose a good deal of tapes if my house burns down in say, December.........These are my "just in case the house explodes" :) I then rotate the sets at the beginning of the year, making the ultra backups for taping and as onsite backups, and moving those to the pile of "listen" tapes. Any "listen" tapes I have two of I give away to unideckers in the area, making sure to tell them that it could be almost 2 years old. (although I am never sure) I only trade DATs I have made a copy of within a month..... I don't recommend this method unless you can afford to, or unless your music is VERY important to you...... P.S. If you think that is bad, you should hear the measures I went to to make backups of analog in order to keep the gens low......hehe =========================================== Darren Murtha dmurtha@earthlink.net =========================================== "If you get confused, listen to the music play" - Jerry Garcia "Trying is the first step to failure" - Homer Simpson

Gee, don't suppose the authorities just might already know what's going on there, do you? Collecting evidence takes time - give them that time and they'll let the sellers hang themselves with their own rope. Unless self-appointed lawmen whining to ebay interfere and prolong the process with blown sales... NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Online auctioneer eBay is under investigation for fraud by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs, according to the New York Post. The San Jose, Calif-based company (EBAY) is under scrutiny mainly because some disreputable sports memorabilia dealers have sold supposedly one-of-a-kind items to more than one buyer, the paper also said. The agency declined to comment on the investigation. It's believed to be making purchases through eBay to bolster its case. Consumer Affairs holds the view that eBay itself can be charged with fraud and not be seen as an innocent middleman because it collects a commission on the sales. Such a stance has implications for all online retailers, the paper also said. "At this point, I don't foresee a material effect on the company," said Sara Zeilstra, an analyst at Warburg Dillon Read. Still she cautioned that the situation could become quite complex from a legal standpoint. In that case, legal fees could become incremental drain on earnings, Zeilstra said. So, let the R!AA come in with a dual pronged attack - put fear into the hearts of those who would sell tapes/cds and hurt into the wallet of ebay's investors. If the former doesn't scare them away, the latter may be motivation enough for ebay to actively do something about it. There's no doubt in my mind they'll be firing at least some warning shots before the year is out. I ended up not using it after having very variable results in tests. While occassionally it would perform flawlessly, more often, there would be a LOT of additional noise. It may be that my power supply wasn't grounded well enough, or there was some problem with the cable I made, but, I'd suggest going another route. Tho it may be worth your while to verify my results, if you're going to buy a motherboard anyway. After all, the asus is a good board. Dan

Hi Tom, Almost every DAT manual recommends against 90m (3+ hour) tapes, including the ones for decks that can actually handle them without problems. I almost never put 90m tapes in my M1 (which is almost the same deck as your D100), because I simply don't want to take too many unnecessary risks. I only do it when I really "have" to. I don't know if the D100 and M1 have been around long enough to assess whether people who use 90m tapes regularly have more problems than people who don't. Nevertheless, it seems prudent to use them sparingly, if at all. I personally don't think the deck was made to handle 90m tapes. As an anecdote, I've found that when rewinding and then pressing play on my M1, I get diginoise for a fraction of a second, which doesn't happen with 60m tapes. This suggests to me that it has problems handling the tapes; that the deck's tension isn't adjusted properly for the thinner 90m tapes. And the deck seems to struggle more in fast-winding 90m tapes than 60m ones. My guess is that this is because the deck's motors weren't designed to handle the extra weight of 90m tapes; doing this a lot could wear out those motors prematurely. It's for that reason that I fast-forward and rewind 90m tapes a lot less than I record them on the M1. (I do that dirty work on my R300, which seems to be less fussy about them.) Peace, <> David

Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 23:45:06 -0800 (PST) I've just rigged up an external rechargable battery system for my D100............... ............... These home-brew dummy batteries are sub-obtimal in design, and so I am wondering if anyone knows a source for "real" dummy batteries (if such things exist), or if anyone else has done what I am trying to do and has figured out a good solution for this problem................. Thanks for any help! Kurt >> I do remember that Radio Shack supplied with their CB Walkie Talkie units a few dummy AA celld as accessory to be used when running a few less Alkaline cells in models that needed to also hold two more cells when running lower terminal voltage NiCad cells. Perhaps these are available as a 'spare part' directly from RS parts supply? These might allow you to solder wires to them, but not too easily as they were of very meltable open construction (nylon, styrene ?) plastic commonly found on some battery holders sold in the parts section at RS. I never used the dummies (they're maybe still somewhere real safe), but found the increased output power from the CB was a benefit at the greater expense of much decreased transmit time from the extra alkaline cells/voltage. You may safely external power the D100 and M1 from 4 alkaline cells (AA, C, or D) to extend running time from 5+, 25, or 55+ hours. I have 'THE' right angle molded power plug/Cord (nicely over engineered) assemblies for doing this safely yourself (E-mail me) OR also have available completed ultra reliable C & D alkaline DAT power systems with Deck/Battery padded carrying case included (also models for D3/D7/D8) as shown on my site at: http://www.sonicstudios.com/batsys98.htm Also at the bottom of the DAT Battery Systems page (above) is a very informative battery types and 'how to use/maintain' section that also should help clear up most questions on how to get the most out of the rechargeable NiMH type batteries currently supplied with the D100 & M1 Sony decks; included info about available (from Radio Shack) real cheap battery replacements and also has an improved NiCad/NiMH charger.
