With the recent discussion of not "contaminating the DAT pool" by using the
SBLive card, I was thinking of an even more simple way of improving the
"pool" of audience tapes. It seems most tapers use the same cheap panasonic
mic capsule (csb's, Sonics, etc.). While the panasonic caps can sound quite
good when right up front (or better yet, right in front of a speaker), the
Soundprofessionals AT853's (especially the hypercard's) sound MUCH, MUCH
better, and for the same price (or less, compared to Sonics). I have many
tapes made with Schoeps, Neumann's, and other very expensive mic's, and they
don't sound any better, in my view, than the AT853's (maybe with very quiet
music a difference would be audible, but I haven't heard it yet). The words
that come to mind are "transparent" and "clean", and the stereo imaging with
the hypercard's is truly amazing (taping fob center and pointing them at the
right and left stacks, they isolate the stacks very well and do a great job
of reproducing a stereo PA mix). They're not boomy, the bass is tight and
full ("feel-it-in-your-chest" bass), the treble is very clean and not harsh,
and vocal clarity is great like a dsbd. I've heard that many hypercard mic's
sound "tinny", lacking bass, but that's not the case with the AT853
hypercards. By comparison, the panasonic caps often produce a fuzzy stereo
image, and sound boomy, lacking vocal clarity (again, unless the taper is
right up front). Even for tapers on a budget, the AT853's are as affordable
as the csb/sonics, and sound like they cost thousands more. So let's really
improve the "DAT pool" and buy better mic's. This doesn't have to cost
thousands. And no, I have no affiliation with the soundprofessionals, just
a very satisfied customer who would much rather trade for tapes made with
AT853's than csb's/Sonics etc...

Hi,
a friend in Europe, who is a big jazz fan, is planning on spending a month
in the bay area this summer and has asked me if he could find "better"
concerts to attend in July or August. I am hoping someone in the bay area
maybe able to give me some idea of festival or club schedules (or pointers
on the 'Net) so i could give my friend some idea of which month he may find
more music...any suggestions/advice/pointers would be greatly
appreciated...personal replies please since i don't think anyone else on
the list really cares ;) as always, thanks for the bandwidth! t.

Hello Everyone,
Contributing to Bootlegging? I'm asking you.
Is it crazy or selfish of me to wonderif there should be concern that many
of us will, if not already are, passing out CD's to people
(freinds/aquaintances) that we used to spin cassette tapes for.
Now that I have the ability to burn CD's I'm feeling a little nervous
about freely passing out digital copies like I do cassette tapes, not
really knowing for certain whose hands they may wind up in down the road.
So I'm asking you folks what you think.
Also, I'm leaning towards buying the KORG 1212 i/o card for my Mac.
Does anyone have one of these cards who could tell me anything good or bad
about them.
Thanks
Dean

The big-time professional bootleggers have no difficulty getting
copies. The more copies there are around, the fewer customers they'll
have. (Suppose everybody on dat-heads decided that bootlegging &
selling was OK; consider how low the price would be driven.)

I believe the Inbox will set SCMS to 00.
The SBM1 also has 1/8" line/mic in (same input, switchable) and 1/4" left and
right in. It has two 7pin outputs. One is the dedicated output "the umbilical
cord" and the is another 7pin I/O on the body, identical to the D7/8/100/M1.

Ahhh, first thing i'd do is trade in that D10 for a D100, or was that a typo?
:)
My experience with the SBM1 is that it makes a really nice stealth companion
for either the D7/8 or D100/M1. I fit both comfortably in a normal sized hip
bag. XLRs can get bulky in very stealth situations.

I'd like to add my .02cents(canadian)to the ebay/boot debate.
1st off..if I'm going to pay fifty bucks to go to a show i'd like to

have all the artists available material...I personally like having
material that no one elser has, unlike a lot of folks I don't trade and I
hold absolutly nothing against people who do.3rd..If you are so high on
the hog against it..don't but them(I'm sure by now someone else has

traders sre so hypocritical you remind me of Jimmy Swaggeert saying 'I
just stuck the tip in"I'll bet if I were to go thru your dat collection
you'd all have at least one bootleg in there.
I certainly don't begruge traders or anti traders opinions...but

I really doubt anybody here is against trading. People are opposed to
the _selling_ of music not owned by the seller.

Any book on speaker design can tell you this, or, there is a store
in Burbank, Ca called Speaker City which sells crossover parts, or
will build any crossover to your specs. Very reasonable. Don't
know the number but it's probablyin the 818 area code, or look for a
web site.

I'm not sure if I helped insight this thread, but having a few "bootleg"
discs on E-Bay, I feel I should weigh in on the subject. You see, I
purchased a handful of these discs almost 5 years ago just prior to becoming
a DAT taper. I had an insatiable urge for quality and the prospect of 5th
gen. analogs wasn't too appealing. So I threw down the cash on a few CD's
not understanding the implications to artists or tapers. Heck, they're
copyrighted and bar coded. Of course, I understand the loopholes these
pirates hide behind now and am further enlightened with the beauty of DAT.
While I make my own CD-R's for exchange and gifts, I have never sold a
single copy. But, the prospect of reselling these Italian and Australian
discs for less than half of my investment(and darn near the cost to
reproduce them on a micro scale) in order to pay for more shows, blanks, and
even legitimate titles doesn't bother me at all. If any damage was done, it
was to me and my wallet and it happened a long time ago. I understand the
theory, but never did my purchases keep me from going to a GD show and never
did it stop me from buying a single GD disc....and now I'M on the firing
line. I only wish the self-rightous would save their personal attacks and
name-calling for the local retailers that they visit to buy their dancin'
Owsley stickers. Why does it seem that all the short-fused stone-throwers
are on the net?
Lastly, not to prove my intentions, but rather to express my pride in my
hobby and to illustrate that there is a more productive approach to this
problem, I'd like to offer my fellow DAT-Heads copies of my latest project -
Phish 11/18/98 from the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, SC. Its a 3 disc set
AKG414>Oade>SBM-1>DAT>CardD digi>Cool Edit 96>CD-R. Good show, sounds
great, levels are perfect, could use more midrange though. If interested,
e-mail me by midnight Thursday 1/28 with the subject "its all good!" and
I'll will spin for blanks and postage. My DA-P1's down so CD-R's only,
traders welcome, but I have only a half dozen CD-R's(not imports)
Peace.....T

> Is there anyway to check the head hours on a Sony D8
There is no non-volatile memory in a D8, so that effectively removes any
possibility that Sony could have implemented a head-hours odometer to count
the number of operating hours. Any such counter would reset itself to
zero every time the batteries were removed for an hour. Thus, no there's
no readout of head hours on any D7/D8/D100/M1.
In real practice, gauging head hours is approximated by examining the
surface of the drum with a magnifying glass. You're looking for circular
grooves, scores, scratches, or missing chunks of plating at the shoulders of
the drum.
-bebop Pete.
(corollary to this rule: when looking at a used car with "50000 miles" on
the odometer, always inspect the rubber pads on the brake pedal and the
clutch pedal. if the rubber pads are significantly worn at the corners,
you can bet that the odometer reading is inconsistent with the *actual*
mileage of the car. a disreputable used-car dealer will turn the odometer
back but will never replace the rubber pedal pads.)

which many of us have tapes and cd's and other recordings, is now gone.
Everything, however, closed the store in grand fashion.

No. I need my help. *I* am a joint copyright owner of any recording I did
with the Grateful Dead (although my copyright is good for Non-Commercial,
Home-Use Only). If I don't take steps to enforce the copyright, I may lose
the right to enforce it.

Taping is not equal to distribution. In a lot of cases, the band ALLOWS
taping expressly for non-commercial, home use. Selling it on e-bay
violates that agreement.

>where does all of this hypocrisy come from?
It comes from my outrage at seeing all of the effort I put into the
recording of the dead, legally, and for non-commercial use, treated as a
profit center by anyone else. It's MY fucking HOBBY. I've spent tens of
thousands of dollars so far IN MY HOBBY. Someone taking the results of MY
HOBBY, and profiting from it is WRONG. Selling a cdr of 7/9/95 is an
insult to me. I react.
I think that most people around here agree that even if the band doesn't
allow taping, trading tapes of them, for non-commercial, home-use is only
legally wrong, not morally wrong. (like possession of weed -- bad laws...)
Making a buck off of that is just sleazy (like marketing, and venture
capital)...
