Subject: Marantz CDR630 "silence stop" feature
Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 12:14:47 -0500
Problem:
I'm trying to clone the 11/11/95 Phish show to CDR, which has the song
"amazing grace." The levels for the song peak out at like -50 or don't
register.
When I try to clone it digitally, the Marantz shuts off mid-song. It's
trained to "stop" itself after 20 sec of "silence" Usually a good feature,
but bad here. Also, going analog and setting levels to 10 doesn't yield
much of a peak either.
I'm wondering if there is a way to make the unit override/ignore the "blank
stop" feature so that it will keep recording even during the blank space.
Or, I have the DAT tracked up already. I'd be happy to provide it to an
enterprising newbie with a digital i/o card and a CDR to do themself...
:)
Thanks in advance.

Don't you just hate it when someone quotes an entire digest back to the list? Or
how about when they post those stupid "This is a multipart message in MIME
format" or whatever?
There ought to be some kind of filter that rejects that crap. And spam.

It's easy to conclude that the Zefiro ZA2 Soundcard is one of the
most popular. However it only has digital 1/O.
If I use a Sony R500 DAT for analog to digital conversion, is it necessary
to record analog source to DAT then play or can you pause the machine in
record and just pass the signal?
Is there another popular soundcard that will give you digital and analog
inputs, converting the the analog source to digital in one step?
Hoping someone will be kind to share there experience as this is a bit
confusing. Thanks!

"The SBM1 also has 1/8" line/mic in (same input, switchable)"
Are you sure you can go into this 1/8" stereo jack line in?(I thought line in
was only via RCAs but I could be wrong)
Someone was wondering how to make a good tape at Dave and Tim (the problem is
the crowd which tends to be real loud, esp bw songs);
How about getting a hold of some D&T tapes that specifically have this problem.
Then make an analog dat copy while cranking it over your stereo or headphones.
As you are making the copy pretend like you're at the show and practice smoothly
moving your level knobs down as you anticipate the nearby crowd about to scream.
When you think they are about to quiet down and music about to begin practice
smoothly turning your levels back up. With the D+T crowd, its easy to overreact
thus causing abrubt level changes. Practice makes perfect.

Hi all. I'm trying to get a friend set up locally with a computer/ burner
setup. Thats all he really wants to do is burn cd's. , maybe some light
internet surfing. I was looking at a low buck system, like a P166, 32 mb
ram, 2.5GB HD, I have a few questions.
do todays burners work well wih IDE, or should I go SCSI from the start?
would a bigger hard drive really make a difference? Assume I'm gonna keep
about half of it free for burning CD's (1.2GB)
do the low buck burners work well? I can get a panasonic/ sony/ mitsui 4x
for around $200. I've heard the philips and HP units arent really any better
considering the price. Are # of coasters more related to the media you use
or the burner (I imagine a little of both?).
what is the recommended soundcard and software? both in terms of price and
performance?
I'd like to hear comments from people describing their systems, and answers
to questions like:
what is your setup (be specific)?
what % of discs do you make that are coasters?
what % of cd players wont read your discs?
what % of cds have errors or drops from the burning process?
what is your media of choice, what does it cost, and where do you get it
(spindles are ok, as long as CD quality is acceptable))?
please respond privately, I'll post results to the list after all are in.
Thanks,
jamie
PS, the d8 and tascam da-20 are sold. I still have the 2000ES (4-head) for
sale, $1100 obo

Hey All
Had the recent priviledge of attending the opening night of MMW at the
Bowery Ballroom in NYC. I also had friends run my rig for 2 addiitional
nights. The only hitch it that I wanted to fill in the other 2 nights w/
nice tapes & admin. a tree.
My date/source info is:
1/13 B&K 4011's > Lunatec V2 > DA-P1
1/15 B&K 4011's > DA-P1
1/16 B&K 4011's > DA-P1
So, I'm looking for the 1/14 & 1/17 show. I'll trade tapes, or send off my
DAT list. I do know that there was a guy running a nice Neumann > Apogee
1000 for the first night & heard that he may have been there for other
nights......Any help is appreciated.
BTW - did anyone else get pissed at the Ballrooms crackdown on mic stands??
What a bummer...

Subject: CDR stuff
Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 12:44:39 -0800
Hello,
I have decided to buy a computer based CDR system to be used mainly for
trading live music. I plan on transferring music from DAT as well as
cloning CDs. I've decided to get the Zefiro ZA2 digital sound card but I'm
still researching what burner to get (although I have decided that SCSI is
the way to go). Looks like http://www.octave.com has good deals, but I'm
still looking around. Does anyone know of anywhere else that offers better
deals? I'm located in San Diego.
There's so much stuff to consider, I was hoping I could get some advice or
words of wisdom from some of you. I checked out many of the web
resources/faqs, but I still have a few questions.
Here's what I'm considering:
Internal or external? I'm leaning towards external, that way if there is
ever a problem with the burner or computer, I can have one serviced without
giving up the other. What are the advantages/disadvantages or both? are
there any?
Buffer size? I'm guessing 1 meg is sufficient?
Speed? I understand what write speed does but I'm still a little foggy on
"read speed" Are there ever compatability problems as far as certain
players not being able to read certain discs (burned at certain speeds?)
CDR or CDRW? I'm thinking I should go CDRW because it's just a matter of
time before CDRW media goes down in price, right? But again, are there
compatability issues? Can any player (car, boombox, walkman, etc) play
CDRWs? or CDRs for that matter...
Bare or Bundled? (w/sw and accessories or w/out?). I'm leaning towards bare
because the ZA2 comes w/sw (SoundForge XP)..but how is that sw? Will that
do or should I get other sw? ...which leads me to: What's the best sw to
use? I would be interested in doing things like EQ-ing and editing in the
future...
What is the best (most commonly used) method for trading (DAT>CD & CD>CD)?
Disc at once, track at once, session at once, or packet writing? Certain
burners only support certain types, right? Or is this a sw function?
Finally, I've seen some "Tips" that recommend doing things to your computer
like changing vcache, virtual memory, disabling background utilities, etc
(for Win95) and I was wondering if doing these things will negatively
affect my computer for other applications other than burning CDs. ne more
thing, I've seen "disc access speed" mentioned..how is this important?
ODPC, OBUDDC, ODATHEADSC: errr..umm...Look for future trade offers!
I'll also help out the first 10 DAT unideckers who want to send B&P.
ps. Anyone know anybody interested in buying about 600 analog tapes? Most
are 1st gen from DAT...

Ok, I understand that some people here get upset when they see bootlegs

this.......what is the difference between making and selling tapes or
cd's or artists who allow taping ie: dmb, phish, dead etc, and taping,
dubbing and trading (or selling) tapes of bands who DO NOT allow taping,
and I see a lot of that here on datheads.....kind of hypocritcal isn't
it?
"oh, xyz allows taping so we should only trade their shows"
but "abc doesn't allow taping but it's ok to sell or trade those shows"

Dear friends,
I need your help again!
I need to suggest to an engineering team to include a standard interface
(spdif coax or optical) in the design of a digital instrumentation to allow
connecting standard and cheap DAT recorders.
They want a GPIB interface for connecting PCs. I would suggest an
additional interface for connecting a DAT as well!
Where I could suggest them to look for finding technical info about the
design of such an interface ?
I look forward at your replies!

I think it's a safe bet that anything "modern rock" that you might
trade on CDR will eventually end up on a commercial bootleg... sad
but true...
Bootleggers don't need to tape shows anymore, they have us to

To which Randy responded:
>perhaps this is/was an issue with NiCd rechargeables instead.
And yet another Randy says:
Yes, this is a carryover from NiCd. NiMH last longer if you only discharge
them to about 40% of capacity, rather than deep discharging them. The reason
for deep discharging of NiCds is their notorious memory effect: if you only
partially discharge them to the same level repeatedly they'll remember that
level and only give you that much capacity. NiMH batteries are similar in
construction, though, so it's probably a good idea to not discharge them to
the same level every time and do a deep discharge every 5th or 6th use. NiMH
cells that are deeply discharged every time last from 700 to 1000 cycles,
whereas those only discharged to 40% of capacity have lasted in excess of
3000 cycles.
David (I think) said:
>> The Ni-Mh rechargable batteries need to be fully
>> charged and discharged about 2-3 times before they'll hold a full charge.
>> If you don't do that, you'll be disappointed with the recording time.
And the first Randy added:
>i agree that the batteries need to be "conditioned" when first purchased
>(although i don't understand why this couldn't be done by the manufacturer).
It's simply impossible to predict how long batteries are going to sit on
shelves before they're actually going to be used. NiMH will self-discharge
much more quickly than NiCd, something on the order of 1% per day at room
temperature. That self-discharge is accelerated in hotter teperatures. So if
the batteries sit on a shelf in a warehouse 6 weeks and then in a store 6
weeks, they're dead and have to be conditioned again anyway. Better to just
let the user do the conditioning so they'll benefit from all the usable life
of the batteries.
BTW, cooler storage temperatures will slow the self discharge down. You
might store them in your refrigerator (not the freezer, that's too cold) and
have them retain their charge longer.
Also avoid charging NiMH in too hot or too cold temperatures. They last
longest if charged at room temperature (70 degrees F or 25 degrees C). Too
hot temps, especially during charge, can permanently damage them. Too cold,
they just won't accept the amount of charge you think you're giving them,
but they will not be damaged.
