it's just one of those things that happens, man. luckily, it's a
labeled tape. just send it back to maxell (addy on the shrink wrap) and
they'll send you a new one. if it happens two more times, then worry
about the deck.

I have two Sony 2600s. I've accessed the button on the remote to observe
the error rates by pushing the button after pushing 91 on the remote.
Anyone know other code #s and what they indicate?

These two quotes from your question to me indicate a lack of focus:

Let me paraphrase your question.
"What's the difference between selling tapes of bands that allow taping,
and bands that don't allow?"
There is none. *SELLING* tapes is lowlife scum behavior. Universally
Despised. Verrry Bad Karma... People who sell tapes will find themselves
writhing in the deepest blackness of hell where little red guys with
pitchforks roast s'mores and will not give you any... Where the... Oh, I
digress....
It's about Non-commercial versus Commercial Use. This is a Hobby. Get it?
Taping and Trading are what we do in our SPARE TIME, for relaxation, and fun.
We generally have a large investment tied up in our HOBBIES, and (I) resent
anyone turning a buck over my sweat, labor, and investment in a HOBBY.
*MY* P.O.V.... I think shared by about everyone here.
I'll give you a bit of advice, though, if you want to make money off of our
efforts....
Sell batteries...
Sell blanks...
Sell microphones...
Sell decks...
Sell tech support...
You'll make friends...
The markup's the best on the tech support, I think... Batteries and Blanks

In general PCs emit a horrendous amount of electro-magnetic noise.
This is especially a problem when recording from FM.
It is a bad idea to let your analogue signals get anywhere near a PC.
At the very least you should use an external converter, but I'm so
paranoid about this that I always do the cassette to DAT transfer
with the PC off then read the bits in from DAT to PC later.
I suppose I should at least try a few test recordings running from
cassette > DAT > PC in one go, but I haven't yet.
The extent of the problem depends on the exact configuration of case,
motherboard, plug-in cards, monitor etc. It is possible to get well-
shielded PCs which emit next to nothing, but you have to make a
special effort to find them.

STOP!!!
Did I miss something, or did the RIAA say that if we help them find all
those dirty bootleggers in the world, that they will support us in our
philanthropic archival of live music. Will they provide soundboards to
those who can't afford mics? Will they remove the tax on audio grade CDRs
and dats? Will they remove the SCMS chip from all machines, if we
volunteer our services to rid society of these THIEVES.
No, I didn't think so.
If the RIAA has their way, the only music we would own, is something bought
at full retail over-priced from Tower/Virgin and nothing else. Stop acting
like they are our friends. They're not.
Back to the bitching...

I'll give you that. My comment is questionable here. I should have said
record labels instead of artists. I have seen a number of comments
in the "bands that allow taping" where artists changed their policy
on recording due to their labels' concerns. Take Leftover Salmon
for instance. They really had to work to get their label to loosen up
their policy...
In any case, I was trying to express why many DAT-HEADS have
strong opinions on this matter. With more people online every
day, and so many avenues for moving merchandise, and
the ability to easily duplicate a digital bitstream, I do
think that a large number of new "Web bootleggers" (NOT
traditional large-scale bootlegging operations) might have
an impact on our hobby. Particularly if these folks are
simply trading with us and selling copies of our efforts to
the public for profit.
> an open taping
policy and good quality tapes are any bands best defense against
bootlegging. it only makes sense that if everyone can get a good copy of
a show, there will be no need for anyone to purchase a bootleg. this is
totally possible with cd-r's.
That is 100% correct, and the best way to devalue "bootlegs".
Thanks for revealing the flaws in my argument. I guess many
people are just pissed that their "trust" with traders is being
compromised. I dunno,

Anyone using Wintaper? Something wierd is going on.
When i change any info on a tape & close it, it changes the date to
like, if it's a 1987 tape, it makes it a 2087 tape.
The only way around it is to make the changes, hit save, then close it
without saving changes, which actually saves the changes I just made....
what's with this? Y2K?

Admittedly it is laying the irony on rather THICK to post a list of RIAA
addy's here on DATheads, with the sincere (!?!) thought in mind that DATheads
would consider them as "friends."
Humor, arr arr.
Well when they DO crack down on eBay, etc., you can bet they will include a
blanket/umbrella law or two to try and reach out to RIAA's other "friends"
here on DATheads, etc. (aka steamroll us all at once, regardless of an
individuals "hobby" or "profit" point of view.) They will never stop the
digital bootlegger, but will most likely continue to succeed in making it much
more difficult than nessesary for all of us hobbyists. There will ALWAYS be a
"next big thing" and if we aren't careful, "IT" won't even HAVE a record
button ON IT! :(
More SCMS for lunch, anyone?
>> These people are not our friends - if it was up to them there would be
no live taping, no means of cloning digital audio, etc. etc.. The RIAA
works for the labels, which in may cases is NOT the same thing as
working for the artists.

Dat-Heads,
I think Ebay is just the tip of the wave when it comes to
the widespread illegal proliferation of digital recordings. Anyway to get
to my point, CDR is a "consumer" level Digital medium and we use a
"enthusiast" level medium and although for live portable concert recording
it will be years til there is a threat to DAT , DAT will become more and
more rare as a medium . Ebay and the CDR sales just shows the cost and ease
of use of CDR for a digital copy of a show, I mean my cousins are 12 years
old and are burning CDR's on the PC at home for $.99 a pop. Ebay will
eventually start pulling these things but I imagine another venue will pop
up that will compete against Ebay for their business. The days of the DAT
community being the only digital medium in town is over and in the upcoming
years with MP3 cards, low cost mini-disc recorders ( the sound quality on
those gets better each year), and trading digital shows via an email
coming right around the bend ....digital shows of next to perfect quality
(depending on the recording) will be as common as analog based bootlegs
were in years past. It is elementary but if a DAT is transfered to a CDR
digitally "correctly at 44.1" they have what we have essentially and also
to my understanding less hassle with SCMS than we do and certainly less
control over the scene than the DAT-Heads do as way ass more people have
CDR's than DAT's.........oh well here comes the new dawn

In line with my last post I would like to ask the list and
Gary Davis:
Does anyone know the actual # of DAT models produced in a production run by
companies like Sony and Tascam (IE: how many D7's and 8's and DA-20's were
actually made) versus a consumer model like the Philips CDR's?????
