No apologies necessary and no offense taken. I want to just clear up how the RIAA addresses were obtained. I simply went to the RIAA web site, looked through the news and copied down the e-mail addresses that appeared on their press releases. The other ones were obtained by doing a search on http://www.hotbot.com and searching on the term "@riaa.com" and selecting the option "exact phrase" After that a bunch of hits came back and I just simply looked through them and copied down the e-mail addresses. Simple as that. I really didn't want to get all mixed up in this debate, I was just relaying information. Hope that helps and I sincerely apologize if I ruffled anyone's feathers. It was not my intention at all. Again, I am sorry. -Mike ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I inadvertantly listed hotbot.com as the search engine that I used to look up some "@riaa.com" addresses. It was actually Altavista. The address is http://www.altavista.com I just rechecked again after I sent my last message a few minutes ago and realized my error. Anyway, it only took a few minutes to look them all up. I do apologize (once again) for any confusion. Sincerely, -Mike ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 14:23:41 -0500 http://www.discobiscuits.com Coming off two nights sold out at the Wetlands Preserve in New York City and the debut of "The Hot Air Balloon", an original rock opera by guitarist John Gutwillig, the Disco Biscuits, Possibly the universes most exciting young band is hitting the road on a nationwide tour. The first 8 shows (in the Northeast) have proven nothing short of monumental, and I have the DATs to prove it!!! What I'm looking for right now are folks out their across America to go out and tape these guys!!! The small-yet dedicated-cadre of Biscuit tapers would be eternally grateful for any efforts made to preserve this band's groundbreaking music on DAT! As for the music-groundbreaking just doesn't do these guys justice. Each show over the past two months has demonstrated that this bands dynamic style is beginning to mature. People have described their sound as "trance funk fusion" or "techno meets jam bands." We Biscuit fans tend to just call it amazing shit, or at least we do when we are still able to speak after shows!!! Really, people, these guys are amazing, and they need to be taped!!! If anyone out there thinks that they might be able to make any of these shows with their mics, please contact me ASAP. I can arrange for you to receive a sample of their music off some of the wonderful DATs me and the other tapers have recorded this tour! I have tix to this show but they are way up in the upper balcony, not a good spot from which to tape at the Beacon. If you have tix down in the orchestra section -- or even near the front of the loge -- and wouldn't mind sharing your space with a stand/rig (or trading tix with me), I'll be happy to provide a patch (or clone/d->a/younameit). The rig I'll run will depend on the answer to the next question. Is "open" taping permissible at Dave/Tim shows? If so, I'll likely run the U89s(stand)->Apogee ad1000. If not, I'll likely run the mk4 caps->actives->cmc6->sonosax->sbm. Any info appreciated. Apologies to NYC-heads who have already seen my plea for "sweet spot" tix, but I thought it was worth one more try with the show only a few days away (on 2/2). Shalom, Daniel Estrin
From: Stan Lobitz <redrain@teamschoeps.org> Subject: Re: Patch for Dave NYC (2/2) and is open taping allowed? Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 14:44:52 -0500 I taped a few Dave and Tim shows last tour and the only one "no taping" was Town Hall and that was No-see, no-tell. A venue prohibition which Daves management appologized for. The dynamics of the audio is quite wierd. The show itself is rather quiet and filled with screaming peri-pubertal girls. The audience noise runs about 8dB above the loudest music. I would suggest using an Apogee AD convertor (Dan has one and that is why someone ought to hook him with tickets in the sweet spot or front of balcony). Using the soft limit and puposefully letting the between song applause overload is the best way to get a decent tape of Dave and Tim IMO. daniel.estrin@chadbourne.com wrote: > Paul Cho <pc132@columbia.edu> wrote: > > >>>Subject: ISO: patch for Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds @ Beacon Theatre > NYC<<< > > Hey Paul (and any other DAT/NYC-heads hitting this show), > > I've got yer patch if you've got the sweet spot from which to run my rig. I've had some similar experiences in the past (mine was '94 at Irving Plaza) and to reduce the screaming young females factor (SYFF tm) that I was hearing upon monitoring the recording with my headphones, my solution was to keep raising the mic stand until it was at maximal height. Tightening the angle on the mics and running a more directional pattern probably wouldn't hurt either. From: James Treworgy <jamie@treworgy.com> Subject: Re: DAT-Heads Digest #739 Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 15:09:37 -0800 While this might make sense intuitively, it's not necessarily true -- some well designed hardware gets excellent results with internal A/D converters. The Event Gina has in internal A/D converter and a 94 decibel S/N ratio in round trip tests through it's analog I/O with very low distortion. Certainly this is well outside the limits of most analog sources you might be feeding in to it. See http://www.pcavtech.com/soundcards/ for reviews of this and other sound cards. From: dan clark <clarkda@one.net> Subject: Galactic 1/28/99 Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 15:26:46 -0500 (EST) Hello jazz nuts, Just listened to the DSBD I ran last night of these guys. Nice dynamics and overall mix, but the tape lacks a bit in the upper end. Anyone who actually knows what the f#*k they're doing with a computer editing program want to help me add some brightness to this otherwise nice recording? It's VERY listenable as is but I'd like to find someone who can add some detail to the treble. Before I get engulfed with requests for the tape, rest assured that when I get the finished product, I'll see about maybe treeing this (perhaps someone who has more free time than me would like to take over administration?) --Dan
From: Bob Ramstad <rramstad@alum.mit.edu> Subject: Dolby HX Pro Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 12:33:55 -0800 Dolby HX Pro is an encode-only system i.e. it occurs during recording only and the resulting tape can be played back on any deck. it was mostly used for cassette systems. my understanding is that it works by varying the amount of bias slightly for more accurate treble reproduction -- magnetic media has different characteristics depending on the frequency makeup of the signal being recorded. i've owned a couple decks with Dolby HX Pro and have never heard any "pumping" type of artifact, then again, i did DJ in clubs for eight years, so i wouldn't say i have the most sensitive ears in the galaxy. (then again, ask the folks i trade with, as i manage to find every last little flaw in every tape i ever get in trades...) -- Bob
From: "Williams, Michelle" <williams@rti.org> Subject: bootlegs and eBay Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 15:48:56 -0500 Just in case everyone hasn't read enough about this topic ;o) First off, I'm amazed (and saddened really) by how many people seem to have a 'who cares' attitude about all of this. I've read "mind your own business" one too many times.. well guess what, it is my business!! I love taping shows and I don't want Anything to interfere with my ability to do that. I read a post from digiphish this morning (same discussion over there) and someone sent an email to the seller of the bootleg(s) and explained everything to him, the seller had no idea how wrong what he was doing was, and said he would change his ways (after stressing that his copy would be the best, because after all, he had a $400 rig hehe (microphone into minidisk he called it)) He also said he would give a list of all the bidders and then various people in digiphish offered the show up for free. I think that was a great approach.. Personally, I don't think I need/want to contact the RIAA because them getting a million extra messages about bootleggers is not going to help us. What I am personally doing, and I hope others like this idea and help, is emailing all the bidders and explaining to them that there is no need to pay money for what is readily available and pointing them to tapetraders or some other such resource. This seems to be the best approach to me, but I'm curious to hear other ideas and insights.. Thanks for the bandwidth.. Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 15:53:20 -0500 p.s. - I'm just curious if any of you DAT non-CD people have changed and started recording at 44.1 instead of 48. I haven't yet taped a show at 44.1 but I heard that there is no discernible difference between the two, is this true? Do you suggest changing to accommodate all the CD-R people (that have invaded the list ;o) Thanks.. Well, I don't qualify as wise, but . . . :) >Thinking of buying a Smart n Friendly Internal Scsi CD recorder. Ha any one >had any >good or bad experiences with this unit or company? I own a Smart and Friendly CD-RW 226 that I purchased about a year ago. It's an internal SCSI model. I've burnt well over 200 CDs on this burner without terribly much issue -- I've made a couple of coasters, but they were my fault. You get an Adaptec SCSI card with this burner. Not all Adaptec SCSI cards are compatible with Win98, and the one that came with my burner wasn't. {Given that my drive is a year old, I don't know if this will still be an issue.} I made the mistake of attempting to upgrade with Win98, and it wouldn't recognize my SCSI card or burner. Their tech support folks were helpful, but the final result was that I had to go back to Win95. I didn't consider this to be a big deal, but it is something you'll want to be aware of. My CD burner died a week ago of unknown {possibly power-related} causes. I got an RMA on it and FedEx'ed it back. They say that it takes 2-3 weeks after they get it for it to return to me. We're one week into that 2-3 weeks, so ask me in a couple of weeks how that went. All in all, I've been pleased with the burner. We'll see how pleased I am with their RMA process in a couple of weeks. /nad
