There's been a lot of discussion about recording at 44.1 to accomodate
transfers to CDs, and it makes a lot of sense. However, one thing that
just occurred to me is that if 96 or 192 kHz is going to the future
standard, 48k might upsample more cleanly than 44.1k.
OTOH, most audio DVD players for the next 5-10 years at least will
probably also play CDs, so there may be no reason to convert for a while
(though some claim that upsampled CDs do sound better), but it may be
something to consider if we want to preserve this music for future
enjoyment.

Anyone know if she allows taping? I'm trying to find out for a friend of mine.
I thought I heard she did, but I don't see her on the list of bands that allow
taping. Thanks in advance!

Dear Friends...
I am trying to narrow down my microphone choices....any kind of input would be
so appreciated. I have been trying to do my homework...and I have the
following questions....I want to tape phish, the allmans, wsp, Rusted Root,
Bela fleck and that sort of thing....I am looking at either the Audio technica
825 and get the omni-directional caps and a hpyer cardiod cap....or for about
175 bucks more....Sennheiser ME 62 and ME 64 and power them with the
K6....
any opinions on what is a better buy...I am thinking the Sen. I use a D-100
and I don't have a preamp....any suggestions>?

Hello,
How much problem will I have converting my 32khz recordings to
44khz.? Will there be any signal lose or will some of the signal not be
there? (Because 32khz did'nt record all of the frequencies?)

I just re-read this and believe you misunderstood. I said the AT853's sound
like they "cost thousands more" than the cheap $2 panasonic caps used in
CSB/Sonics etc., NOT that they sound like they cost thousands more than
Schoeps/Neumanns - No way! I just meant they sound comparable to Schoeps

I had a couple of ideas to record the concert so that the loud "passages" dont
destroy the silent ones. I would set up two recorders!! One should be set at
a recording level for the quiet parts, and the other lowered for the loud.
Then edit them together!!! My other thought was to eliminate the loud section
by beating the shit out of the shreaking girls...

The help file sez that the no of bites in each selection must be divisable by
2532 (I think), and that any underage will be padded with zeroes, which will
produce a "tick" on the recording. How do I know the # of bites in the
selection?

I just completed a cross-country move and I have the following extra
equipment. Its been in storage for 2 months, and since I don't use analog
cassette much anymore I haven't missed it. Time to find this stuff a new
home:
1. Tascam 112MkII cassette deck.

Pro 19" rack mount, an industry standard, built for years of trouble-free
use operation. Smooth, rugged mechanism, Dolby B/C/HX Pro, pro VU meters,
1/4" ins on front, beefy HP output, factory Bal I/O option is available,
upgraded low-impedance capacitors. Great soundstaging & ambiance.
Includes service manual, less than 80 hours use, new in 9/96 (paid $680),
$400.
2. Kenwood KX-7030 cassette deck. 3-head, dual-capstan, top-of-the-line
in early 90s, great metering, off-the-tape monitor, Dolby B/C/HX-Pro.
Upgraded low-impedance capacitors and high speed rec. op-amp. Includes
service manual, less than 120 hours use, new in 4/93, (paid $300), $175.
3. Alesis MEQ-230 1/3-oct EQ.

19" rack mount, 30 bands per channel (60 total), 1/4" and RCA in/out. Used
only once, new in 3/98 (paid $200), $130.
All gear is in like-new condition and has been _very_ well cared for. I
have the original boxes, packing, and owners manuals for everything and am
flexible on shipping arrangements...

Hello there,
Okay, so I'd never even ask for this unless I were desperate. I have the
chance to tape a few Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds shows on the west coast
from really excellent seats. I am borrowing my friend's DA-P1, but I have
no mics and I can't really commit to going until I can secure some.
Therefore, if anyone is willing to lend me some nice mics from about
3/4-3/11 (would be hitting Phoenix 3/6, Santa Barbara 3/7 and LA 3/9), I
would be forever grateful. I suppose this is really directed towards
people who know me already, though I sent it to the whole list on the slim
chance a truly benevolent soul is out there. I have tons of references...
take care,

I am borrowing my friend's Tascam DA-30 for the next several months and I
was hoping someone who has the same machine (the old kind, not the newer
DA-30 mkII) would be willing to help explain some of the buttons and
various features. In particular, I was wondering if there was a way to
monitor the error count while playing tapes. I also have questions about
the function of certain buttons. Please get in touch with me if you can
help.
Also, I am trying to locate 2 Phish shows on DAT. 1st: 5-8-93
UNH Field House. There is a Schoeps MK4 FOB source for this one which I
am interested in tracking down. 2nd: Ian's Farm 89. I thik the
SBD->Cass Master->DAT circulates and I'd love to find that one.
I have a humble DAT list which I will happily trade anything from
in exchange for either of these shows. I also have 65+ Phish videos
which I could offer as well. My list can be found at:

Hi
I have borrowed an Audio Technica 822 mic to use. On the mic there is a
3-way switch (off, |, _/: (1) OFF, (2) line, (3) crooked line. What does
the
line and crooked line stad for?
Any and all help appreciated.
Take Care,
Delano
==========================================
My, but you _are_ new, aren't you? ;)
(1) OFF = Off, of course. Saves batteries when not recording.
(2) line = flat response, normal operating mode, usual setting for distance recording.
(3) crooked line = bass rolloff ON, reduces bass response by 12dB/octave from 120 hZ down. Used
for close micing to eliminate proximity bass boost or to reduce wind & handling noise in outdoor
recordings.
Go check the FAQ section of Dat-Heads, or maybe Tiedrichs' Taping Tips out of Dead Net, or
maybe run a search using "Audio-Technica" as a key word.

'um Michelle Shocked comes quickly to mind. I'd be willing to bet you that
at least half of the bands in the "Bands that actively hate tapers" list at
the end of the BTAT list have taken their particular stance due to a
specific bad experience with a bootlegger.
And BTW, I do a lot of B&Ps - Mostly on CDR. I never sell, or do 2:1s; I
don't like to trade with people who do 2:1s; and I don't accept "cash
equivalents" for B&Ps (just to avoid that slippery slope). Most of the
people I do B&Ps for are fans of what I think are under-appreciated artists.
These people usually don't tape or trade, and they pretty uniformly refer to
what I provide them with as "Boots" and what I do as "Bootlegging". I may go
to hell for stealthin', but does that make me a "Bootlegger"? Most people
would say so. I don't know, but I hope the devil likes The Devil Dub Band -
I got a great tape last night!

To reiterate what I told Jesse earlier and dispel any possible confusion, the
current version of TapeTracker (Version 2.2) will be made Y2K compliant long
before the turn of the century. The problem is not that the task is hard to
accomplish, it is just that I am swamped with other work and have not had a
chance to get around to it. It is my intention to have this free update
available by no later than June 30, 1999, a full 6 months before it will have
any affect on the program's usage.
Access 2, which TapeTracker currently runs under, is not considered Y2K
compliant only in that if you type in a short date of 1/1/00, Access will
assume that you mean 1/1/1900. It does, however, fully understand and record
year 20XX dates. All that is necessary to correct the problem is to intercept
entries of less than a given year, say 1940 and immediately convert then to
year 20XX dates in the background. If anybody wants more information about how
this will be accomplished, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge
Base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q132/0/67.asp?FR=0
The bottom line is that if you are a TapeTracker user you will be able to
continue using your program into the next century. In order to be notified
immediately when the update is released, be sure that you are on the
TapeTracker Bulletin mailing list. You can sign yourself up by choosing the
Mailing List button on the TapeTracker web site at http://tapetracker.com/. As
soon as the maintenance release is available for download I will notify people
by sending a message to this mailing list. FYI, the only posts made to the
mailing list are from me announcing updates and TapeTracker related information
and I *never* share user information with any other parties. If you are unsure
of whether you are on the mailing list it doesn't hurt to sign up again because
duplicate entries are removed automatically.
Keep those tapes rolling,
