While the AT853's are definitely a good value, with decent location, the
sonic studios mics sound much more natural and open with better
transient detail, transparency, and spaciousness.
The AT853 cards that SP have are obviously more directional than the
omnis and thus not as natural and open, nor as detailed.
At far distances the 853's directional pickup pattern has an advantage
there but the best tapes are recorded reasonably close and omnis are
superior.
The $2 panasonic capsules argument is irrelevant, the caps are
extensively modified.
Your argument holds water with respect to the Core Sound Binaurals
comparison, where's the treble on those, stereo image claustrophobic?
As far as some of the schoeps mics, they're not as open, detailed, and
natural as the sonics with good location. Kinda artificial sounding.

I started taping at 44.1 before I got a CDR (but after I knew they
existed and that eventually I'd get one).
While there's no discernable difference between 44.1 and 48, there's
equally no discernable difference between a tape made at 44.1 and one
made at 48 and converted properly to 44.1.

Hey all-
A recent trade fell through and I have this great deercreek show, which
I would like to part with. It is on two 60m Maxell DATS. I would love a trade,
but blanks will do. The show was taped with Neumann mics. Any takers?? Let me
know.

Michelle Shocked used to allow taping? I've been taping her since '92 and
I've never been aware of her ever allowing taping. Have you ever actually
seen a commercial Michelle Shocked bootleg, I know I haven't.

I have a Sekd Prodif24. Not as nice as the Z2, but over $100
cheaper. Bought it from Bayview Audio. It came with a stripped
down version of Samplitude.
I have not used it extensively and so can only say that I
like it so far but you ought to investigate it futher yourself.

I have been digital for about 8 months now and still don't have the
ability to clone.
I am looking for two Dead shows for a really good friend. One was his
first show and the other is just a special show that he has never been
able to get his hands on.
The shows are:
Grateful Dead 7-2-81 Houston, TX. Houston Summmit
Grateful Dead 8-4-82 St. Louis, MO. Kiel Auditorium** most
importantly the jam that comes out of Terrapin.
Any help would be appreciated......
I can also promise to D>A, or whatever to get these.
Thanks.....Chris Wright

Sometimes a tape will play better the second time around; I don't know
why. (Maybe it polishes dirt off the heads the first time, or dirt
off the tape, or something.)
> Also does the 64 times oversampling feature on =

That seems unlikely. It has to do with the D/A converter, long after
the bits are read off the tape.
> Or do all DAT decks have oversampling.
Probably not; there are other kinds of D/A converters available.

They might be better at interpolation, or better at track-following
tapes with off-spec striping, or better at reading "weak" bits off the
tape, or . . .

If you are using the Win 95/NT graphical version of CDRWIN, which I assume
you are, since you're not referring to it as 'DAO' which is the older DOS
based version, you can ignore that part of the help file. Jeff doesn't seem
to update it very often, and there's some stuff in it that really doesn't
apply to the newer versions.
That was an old error message from the DOS version, which even in later DOS
versions I believe was removed, for what reason I do not know.
Either way, even back when I used to use the DOS version, I used to burn
dozens of discs that were not divisible by 2352 and never got a single
"tick" noise on any of the discs.
I wouldn't worry about it.

I need some help regarding digital cables. First off, I have a Sony
PCM-M1 and will be buying a Sony PCM-R300 in the coming weeks. It's my
understanding that I'm going to need a 7pin->coax cable to connect my M1
and R300.
What does everyone think of the combi-cable offered by core-sound? It
sounds as though it would give me the cable I needed to connect my
portable to my home deck, and give me a cable that I could use to patch
into other portables at show(decks requiring the 7 pin connecter and
with decks that use coax). And the price is fairly attractive.
What are some other options/recommendations for Digital cables? The
Oade cable seems to be popular, but that requires additional cables
dosen't it?
thanks for your time, help and bandwidth....keep taping
Paul

When you upsample like that, you don't lose anything--you just represent
the same analog signal with more samples. Where you get into a frequency
loss is when you downsample to a lower sample rate. The upper frequency
range of your existing recordings should be 16Khz due to the brick wall
filters applied during the conversion.

I didn't particularly care for the performace so I am not intersted in
trading other Lucinda tapes. Any interested parties pleae contact me
after drifting across my tape list to see what kind of music I am usually
interested in trading.
On a forst quick listen tape sounds like a B/B+. Clipping for a few
seconds in a few very loud passages.

As recommended by others on Datheads, I downloaded a very
nice shareware (not free, you should register) program
called CDWAVE. It's only $10.00 USD. This program takes
care of splitting the tracks in the correct multiples for
you. Makes life much easier.
CDWAVE, available at http://resource.simplenet.com
Then use CDRWIN to burn the CD-R using those split tracks.

Im sure this has been covered a thousand times here but could somebody
run down why having an extended warranty is a good idea, what are my
options what do they cover...I have never purchased an extended warranty
for any purchase my family and I have made...but I hear its a good idea
when it comes to DAT machines.
Besides making intelligent purchases with my new deck the most daunting
task is gettting a few tapes to listen to....is there someone out there
willing to take me under their wing sort to speak and be willing to fill
a blank or 2 for me to get me started...I have nothing to listen too and
sure would apreciate any help in the few months before I can purchase
another deck. (And my family thought I spent to much on analog tape and
equipment....wait until they find out!!!)
Any help and information with both inquiries is greatly apreciated.

It's pretty clear to me that ANY mic of decent quality
(CSB/SoundPro/whatever) can make a great tape if used properly under the
right conditions. I've heard some 853 tapes that sound pretty good, and
I've got some CSB/Sonics tapes that I'll put against just about anything.
It seems unfair to compare a hypercardiod mic set to omni mics, especially
when that hypercard isn't really a "stealth" mic- it's about 2x the size of
CSBs or the other offerings from Sound Professionals. It seems to me this
whole thread isn't quite accurate. You probably wouldn't run B&K 4006
omnis from the back of a stadium, but I don't think anyone says those
aren't premium mics....
