That's a flame-provoking question if there ever was one!
Anyway, I know that the Mac rocks for digital audio, that it is _easy_
to use, that I dont get goofy "buffer underruns", clicks, pops,
channel-swapping due to an out of spec video card, etc-- basically,
you plug the stuff in and it works.
BUT! (and this is why am posting, not to induce a Mac vs PC war)
Apple just came out with a new line of Macs --the "Blue G3" macs--
there are some serious issues with these computers at the moment with
respect to digital audio. Most do _not_ have built in SCSI (going
with firewire instead) and no floppy drive (and if you want to do
audio editing with ProTools or many other programs, you need a floppy
to do the install due to copy protection issues). A year from now the
dust will have settled and (most) everything will be compatable, will
work together fine, etc, but Apple seems to be moving to some "next
generation" type of hardware that most software and hardware vendors
have not caught up with yet.
The upshot is that I would imagine the "old" G3s are going to drop in
price dramatically if they have not already done so.
There is a high-volume, moderated, Mac Pro-audio mailing list (do a
yahoo search for DAW-MAC) that you may want to check out. I've been
fiddling around with this stuff for about a year and that list is
still 95% over my head.

hi,
managed to get sweet copies of all 3 nights at the regattabar in cambridge
last week of the christian mcbride quartet & charlie hunter duo - both sets
each night; however, i only brought a 60m tape for the 2nd set on thursday
night and missed the last 20 minutes of the final funk jam...tell me
another dat-head was more prepared than i and had a 90m tape running...if
so, i would love to setup a quick trade for the 2nd set, or at least the
last tunr ;) thanks! t.

Why doesn't someone make a DAT rewinder/fast-forward -ONLY machine?
It could be done for cheap, and would save ALOT of wear and tear on
our machines!
Okay, this is a hypothetical question, no reply needed, UNLESS you

Does anyone think this soundpros vs. csbs vs. sonics vs schoeps vs. ? is helpful

I have to say that virtually every tape I have gotten with the Schoeps Mk5
and CMC has overwhelming mid and low bass. Obviously I can't be sure that
it's a mic problem, but it seems likely.

There are a few possibilities.
The and most common first is that most soundboards do not have digital
outputs. Many folks try to feed an analog signal into a digital
recorder - the use of RCA plugs for both analog and digital can confuse
things. Unfortunately it will never work.
The second, assuming that the soundboard did have a standard digital
S/PDIF output, is that the M1 doesn't accept standard S/PDIF voltage
levels (thanks to Sony's proprietary interface design). You'll need to
convert the S/PDIF level to one that that the M1 can accept. You can
use a Midiman CO2 ($69 -- please see our Web page for details) along
with the cable you have now, or Sony's RK-DA10P cable (around $75 from
Sony dealers).
Hope that this helps!

While some of our mics start with the low cost Panasonic capsules, we
put considerable amount of time into the modifications that give our CS
Binaural mics more than 20 dB more dynamic range, much lower distortion,
smoother frequency response and lower self-noise. They sound nothing
like the stock capsules.
You'd be surprised at how many excellent sounding mics from very
well-known manufacturers start with low cost capsules. The cost of the
capsule has little or nothing to do with the cost of the labor,
materials and knowledge that ends up in the final product.

When last we sent a TCD-D3 to Sony for repair, they had stopped
supporting the -D3, did not offer the flat rate any longer and did not
gurantee that they would have the parts available to fix it. The quoted
$350+ to fix one. We've since scrapped our -D3's.

The CSBs have a flat high frequency response to 20 kHz and above, and
their stereo image is wonderful if you take the time (as with any omni
mic) to position them correctly.
For another perspective on our CSBs, please see the 30+ pages of user
comments in our Web page, many of which were submitted by DAT-heads

That cable would work for a single feed. If you wanted to be part of a
daisy chain you might consider using our 7-Pin-Coax-I/O cable.
All of our cables are passive. We have a file that describes the
situation in which passive and cables work well. I'd be glad to send it

I had a couple of ideas to record the concert so that the loud "passages" dont
destroy the silent ones. I would set up two recorders!! One should be set at
a recording level for the quiet parts, and the other lowered for the loud.
Then edit them together!!! My other thought was to eliminate the loud section
by beating the shit out of the shreaking girls...

But seriously folks, all you really need are two timecode machines & a synch cable, right? (And
the extra tapes, batteries, splitter box, & time to do the editing, and this chair, and this lamp,
and this ashtray, that's all you'd need . . .)

The new HHB CDRW cd recorder will also be sold by Fostex.
Made by Pioneer.
Fostex faxed me a sheet on it.
With a bit more info.
The new unit will have two power supplies like the HHB CDR800/ Fostex CD200.
Also, there are three smcs modes: inhibit, permit and once.
Four digital fade speeds: 6,9,12 and 18 seconds.
Erase modes support: last track, all track, disc or TOC only.
Constuction is said to be designed to provide a high level of screening
against electronic interference.
Fostex is a white face and HHB has the dark purple.
They are both due in Feb. or March.

Subject: An easy specific trade offer? (KPFA related)
Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 18:18:19 EST
Hi DATheads,
I'm an old retired trader delurking quickly to
make an offer & to request help with something
probably quite easy & appealing to at least one
Deadhead DAThead.
I dug out two old 3.75 ips reels of two 1975
shows that are not in general circulation in excellent
quality as far as I know. I've baked the reels &
transfered them to CDRs. I made an extra set of
CDRs (2 per show) in order to trade for my request of
4 CDRs of whats certain to be common now.
I'm personally interested in clean CDR copies
of the following excerpts from David Gans KPFA
Benefit Dead Marathon this past weekend. They
are these recently unearthed items:
2/13/70 Early Show
2/14/70 Early Show
5/19/66 Avalon (both sets)
1966 source unknown excerpt & Hunter/Patti Smith CBGB tracks
I believe all of this will fit on 4 CDRs quite easily.
If you have nice clean DAT copies of these items &
can make CDRs, I'll happily send you the
following 4 indexed CDRs directly from my reels:
Show #1
8/20/75 Kieth & Donna Band (with Jerry Garcia on guitar on all of it)
Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA
**Nak 550 soundboard direct master->3.75ips Reel->DAT@44.1k->CDR
Disc one:
1 tuning
2 Tough Mama (Garcia vocal)
3 My Love For You
4 Straight Life (25 minute instrumental)
5 Come See About Me
6 How Sweet It Is (Garcia vocal)
Disc two:
1 Showboat
2 Instrumental (11 minutes)
3 Sweet Baby
4 Instrumental (22 minutes)
filler: JGB-Moore Theater, Seattle, WA 3/7/76 (2nd gen aud)
5 Who Was John
6 Moonlight Mile (YES, the Stones "Sticky Fingers" tune)
Notes: If you enjoy Garcia "out of context" or enjoy "Reconstruction-like"
jams with horn section, etc, you'll like this. I don't think this
circulates much. I've never seen it on lists.
Show #2
6-17-75 Grateful Dead- Bob Fried Memorial Boogie, Winterland, SF
I'm sure most are familiar with this, the one (of 4) Dead shows
in 1975 not in general circulation in high quality. This is really the
unvieling of
the "Blues For Allah" material 2 months BEFORE the famous
GAMH gig. It contains the first "Help On The Way" in instrumental
form as well as an all too scarce "Blues For Allah". (see Deadbase for
setlist).
This is a unique audience recording where the mics were seperated
approx 20' apart & it has wonderful stereo seperation. My reel
was 1st Gen from the original masters & this is an amazing recording for
the time. (Each complete set on a seperate CDR.)
If anyone is interested in THIS specific trade, please get in touch.
I haven't the time anymore to be actively trading responsibly,
& don't have lists together anymore. But I would
enjoy the above mentioned KPFA tapes & this could get these
excellent recordings I have circulating more, without any more
time consumption on my part.
Thanks for any help to those who reply & thanks for the bandwith all.

I'm having all sorts of DN show up in my D8 now, and I'm almost positive

in the right direction, I'd be very grateful. FWIW, I'm very familiar

have cleaned the heads on VCR's many times before. I'm more interested
in the way that you went about doing it as opposed to the basics of head
cleaning.
