About their touring. Sometimes it hurts to see them on stage- They are boring. I am irked, you are pissed, You should move on; And Ive made my point... Remember their first gig; At Woodstock- well I was not born, So go shoot me. They played like crap - I am sorry; I rented the tape and it all seemed silly. I was bored, you got stoned; they got muddy. And Im out three dollars. Something inside is telling me that Dave needs the money- or is it Steven? They wont play any songs that are new Nor even varied! Im perplexed, undersexed, and dejected; And Ive made my point... (I could go on but I think those who wanted the giggle got it by now). No evil spirited retort here; just a little fun poking. I have all of their CD's- I swear! D

Is it possible to buy a internal drive and replace the 40 MEG drive in a Rodime 45 Plus external drive off and old Macintosh? I've already upgraded to a 80 MEG, just wondering if the GIG drive is compatible? Thanks again! Steve Burtchaell 76 Packenham Ave. Chalmette, LA 70043 504-271-3600 hm :)
From: Steven M Burtchaell <smb01@gnofn.org> Subject: Please recommend SCSI HD. Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 18:04:21 -0600 (CST) I'm making final decisions on a set-up for CD burning. Want to buy a Hard drive with with fast enough seek time capable of easily handling digital input and output. One that can be used on the SCSI chain of a MAC and PC would be great has I use own both platforms. Is there any particular brand and protocol like SCSI II or Wide SCSI that assures better performance or does it even matter? I'd like to get something decent for under $400. Any recommendations appreciated. Also, anyone know of a good place to mail order it over the phone? Some idea of price and size would be helpful, too. Anybody buy one lately? Thanks! Steve Burtchaell
From: UT2SV@aol.com Subject: Sony M1 to Philips 765 Optical Digital Cable Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 18:57:04 EST Is there any compatible cable for this connection. The 3 that Sony has recommended don't work and a custom (coresound optical out/coaxial in) doesn't work either. Any suggestions or does anyone else have any experience with this type of connection? From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Why I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Windows '98 Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Wed, 3 Feb 1999 03:16:01 -0800 At this very moment, I am noise-reducing a 75 minute long file. At the same time, I'm playing that file, to listen for any changes I may want to make. At the same time, I'm reading another show onto my hard disk from CDR. At the same time, I'm sending this email. I'm running an $89 300Mhz AMD K2 processor in a hacked- together computer that cost around $500. All of these processes are running very efficiently and none of them appreciably slowing down each other. And if one of them was to crash, I have very little fear it would crash the entire system. Of course (it's been said before!) YMMV. Since people are asking about this, here's what I'm running: AMD K2/300 in a Matasonic motherboard (built-in sound, Intel chipset) The motherboard was designed for 66mHz but I'm running it at 75. I'm running the processor at its rated speed (300MHZ) 64MB SDRAM (note: SDRAM works much faster than EDO and Fast Page Mode memory) A regular PCI video card, 2MB (?), 16.7 million X 640 X 400 A cheap ADAPTEC SCSI card which came OEM with the Philips CDR. 4 EIDE/U-DMA hard disks of various sizes - partitioned with FAT32 for partitions larger than 2GB. A Floppy that doesn't work (almost like a new mac - sorry) A Yamaha CDR400tx 4X CDRW drive (CDR2460 rev 1.0d) Cool Edit '96 Goldenhawk CDRWIN 3.5C I don't have a digital soundcard. I "import" music by burining it to CDR or CDRW with a stand-alone Audio CD recorder, then use CDRWIN to read the music from the CD-R drive into my computer. This is (IMHO) quite a bit more efficient and reliable than direct DAT>HD transfer. But it does limit your program to 74.7 minutes without a break... To write cue sheets for CDRWIN, I use a text editor open in one window while the music is loaded into Cool Edit in another. It's then very easy to switch between the cue sheet and Cool Edit. (Use alt-tab with your thumb and middle finger to switch windows). Of course I have Cool Edit set to tell time in 75ths of a second. Then, when the cursor is positioned exactly where I want a track to start, I read the time from the top line of the lower right-hand corner. I haven't found any way to "cut and paste" the time, so you have to memorize 3 two-digit numbers for a few seconds. --Gary
From: "Joshua Fox" <jafox@unity.ncsu.edu> Subject: M1 Manual Help Date: Wed, 3 Feb 1999 07:19:46 -0500 Hello All -- Is there anyone with an M1 or an owners manual and a few extra seconds? On page 28 (someone told me) there is the instructions about how you defeat SCMS -- apparently you can go through the menu and make all subsequent recordings come out as 00. Can someone please give me this info while I still have my buddy's machine? From: Tradedats@aol.com Subject: Help with Sony Extended Warranty on D-8? Date: Wed, 3 Feb 1999 08:32:17 EST Hi D-heads, Jeez I am so lame, I sent this out on MONDAY to Dat-heads-Request....address duh!! That just goes to show the kind of week I've been having...... i hope yours is better... I'm having a problem buying the extended warranty for the Sony D8. I purchased a "Factory new" D-9 from a Sony Outlet store and they told me to call the Sony Partnership for the warranty. I called and the Partnership said that it's not available for that product. I called Sony Customer Service back and of course they could offer no additional info. So can you help me? Is the 5-year extended warranty still available? Who do I call? Thanks for your help! Mike

Some of you have been very kind to me, helping me get started with my DAT collection. I still am lacking Grateful Dead. I just got a show on WHCL in Clinton NY on the Hamilton College radio station. It is Saturday AM from 10:00 AM to Noon. I will predominantly be playing Dead but I as we go forward I will also be playing Phish, SCI, moe., JA...... If anyone could help me with DAT and CDR B&Ps I would greatly appreciate it. I'll even mention your name on the air ;) steve james
From: Alex <alexc@well.com> Subject: SnoCore etc. Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 11:36:44 -0800 Anyone planning on taping the Everclear/Soul Coughing Sno-Core tour? I'd like to hear other tapes from the tour. Taping is not allowed so it will have to be a stealth venture. Check out Pollstar to see when they are coming to your town. Great show last night, I'd love to hear more! -alex P.S. Anyone who doubts Schoeps superiority over the low end mics is invited to brings their mics and come tape a show with me anytime and we can compare results :)
From: Jay Lyons <jayl@southeast.net> Subject: VP-88 mic reply Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 10:38:05 -0500 Hi, I too, have this mic and couldn't be more pleased. I'm still in the process of trying out the various patterns that you can set for the mic. I find that I determine where I'm positioned and how far from the stage/stax I am when I set the pattern pickup. In fact, I just tried m/s for a environmental tape I just made of the ocean...very pleasing results. I think it captures a very clear picture of the event as well, like you stated. >From: John.Read@infores.com (John Read) >Subject: Another microphone to flame... > As long as everyone is putting their mics in the >ring for comparison (see DAT-heads #747, Re: AT853's vs Sonics vs. Schoeps), I thought I would solicit some opinions from everyone regarding my Shure VP88, large diaphragm condenser, stereo mic. >> It really seems to capture an accurate 'picture' of the original sound. There are a few different settings on this mic but I generally use the low stereo setting with a bass roll off for room recording. I was also told to always use the low-cut filter since this will help reduce any of the rumble incurred from the noise of the mic stand itself that you might pick up. I then put the mic into my Inbox 20AD before going to the datdeck. >> This cuts out a lot of the ambient noise versus using a high stereo setting which picks up too much side noise. >> The main thing I am looking for here >> is whether this mic would be generally considered a good mic for capturing live shows that I intend to trade with the discriminating audience here on dat-heads. Oh yeah! You should NOT have any problem with that! I've already traded with fellow datters...this is a upper end mic price/performance wise so you're in a very good position. Side note: our local symphony hall has one hanging from the ceiling to record the orchestra and it's performance...their soundman said the same thing to me that you mentioned -- it records a very accurate picture of what is there. From: Erik Johnson <Erik@3dfx.com> Subject: WTB or Trade: Used mic preamp: Date: Wed, 3 Feb 1999 10:59:11 -0800 Hi All, I'm looking for a used portable mic preamp. Will consider anything from Sonosax to Aerco, and anything inbetween. If you'd like to sell or trade for your preamp, get in touch. For trades, I have two items I can offer: 1-Definitive Technology BP10 Loudspeakers: Awesome sound. Original List: $1100/pr, Current Value: ~$550---see www.definitivetech.com for details 2-Audio Alchemy DAC v3.0 w/ HDCD and Audio Alchemy DTI Pro Jitter reducer: Will make any portable or home dat deck sound even better. This is a two unit set, both with external high current PS4 power supplies. The DAC includes twin Burr Brown 20-bit DAC's. The DTI pro reduces jitter so that the digital signal from your deck is as close as possible to the signal playing through your speakers. An awesome combo. Original List: ~$2000 for both. Current Value: ~$550 Depending on the value of your preamp, maybe we can arrange a partial trade/partial cash deal. Get in touch if you are interested. Erik PS- I'd also consider a pair of Mics for purchase or trade (Neumann, AKG, Microtech Gefell, Oktava, or Schoeps only). Let me know what you've got.
