Subject: environmental tapes...any interest?

Hoyhoy datheads,
I just made a environmental type of tape. I live at the beach but still
some blocks from the ocean. I went down there and recorded the ocean onto a
60M this past Monday evening between 9:30p - 12:30a to get as "pure" a tape
as I could.
Didn't want anything other than mother nature on the tape.
My question is twofold:
Is there any interest in tapes such as these?
I would be interested in trading for other like tapes ie.,
.. in a mountain range/valley on a breezy day as the trees throughout the
valley whisp as the wind blows thru.
a thunderstorm/rain shower
and other types of environmental sounds. What I have in mind is a full
length uncut tape recorded in one setting only per tape. All pure mother
nature, no machines, jets or other pollution. I'm not looking for sound
bites but more something of the kind to listen/relax to.
Just curious...
Later,
Jay

Hello All!
What's the story about the mic or line-in's of the Sony decks (D7/8/100 or M1)?
I know the D7/8 aint as good as the D100 but how big is the difference?
Would I still want to use a Zefiro inbox as much as possible with a D100?
(stealth may be more important, though)
What conditions make the weaknesses or strong points of the various inputs
appear?
Please let us know...

I just found out Eugene is playing tonight (2/4) at the Downtown Music
Gallery, and the next 3 nights at the Knitting Factory. Love to get tapes
of him if anyone can attend. Also, he supports taping of his shows,
usually including soundboard access, though that may depend on the venue.
Some of him to trade, lots of other stuff.

Our 7-Pin-to-Coax cable will do the job of moving audio data to the
SBLive card from your D8 at low cost. For details, please see our Web

Cheap? Last time I checked, the MD Data discs cost about 4 times more than
the MD Audio discs. Recording on the MD Data discs only is *not* a selling
point, really.

Hello all,
Please excuse the plug, but The Jerry Site is moving to a new home and I'd
like to take this opportunity to inform everyone. The new address is:
www.thejerrysite.com
I've also made some updates. These include:
- A complete Jerry Discography compiled by Matt Schofield.
- 4 new Bob Minkin JGB photos (from early '80s).
- More DAT genealogies for circulating tapes.
- Updated and completely new setlists.
- Show Finder. Enter a date, press a button and the setlist comes to you!
- Better support for older browsers (IE 3.x in particular).
- A complete redesign.
Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks!

Jonathan Hayes asked what kind of mods were made to the stock
Panasonic capsules in order to improve their performance for
products such as Core Sound or competing products.
If you haven't already, locate a copy of Jeff Maggard's DAT-Heads
Mic FAQ, which I found with a web search for "Panasonic", "capsules"
and "Helmholtz". See question #39:
{39} What kinds of capsules are typically used in 'stealth' microphones?
What's good/not good about them and why?
This section is written by Dave Josephson, a mic manufacturer himself.
As far as I know, it hasn't changed since the March 1993 edition.
Funny that this FAQ doesn't seem to be on the DAT-Heads pages at

,,going to sf in the morning for the gigolo aunts show wednesday at slim's.
come if you're in the bay area. don't forget saturday is the record release
party/gig at the viper room in la.
going to boston for the gigolo's hometown record release party on 2/27 and i'm
going to stay on the east coast for a while to play some gigs with cracker, i
think. looks like i'm playing philly with them on 3/4, and then nyc on 3/5
and 3/6. gigolo aunts will probably be opening the shows on the 4th and the
5th. big fun."
So is there anyone who could do me a favor and TAPE these gigs for me?
I am not sure if he'll join the Gigolo Aunts on stage, but if he does, I'd
be definitely interested !!
And the CRACKER-gigs should be great, with or without Adam.
PLEASE get in touch with me if you're planning on taping any of these gigs.
And if you meet Adam, say "Hi" from me ;-)

A buddy and I are have decided to go in halves on microphones here in the next couple of months, and I'd like to get as much input from others as possible.
We've pretty much decided to look for a used pair of Neumann KM140's, and I'd like to explore options as far as pre-amps are concerned. Neither he nor I like to cut corners, so I'd like to examine the higher end of what's available.
Also, I'd like to know whether or not I should purchase a D>A for a portable unit. If memory serves, I've seen them in recording rigs, but I'm not quite sure what purpose they would serve. Comments?
If you could email me directly, that'd be fantastic.

I recently exceeded my storage cabinet. I have like 60+ tapes without a

storage case?? I'm kinda preferential to wooden storage cases too. I
called up the Oade Bros. and they were in negotiation with someone to begin
making cases again. I also called IKEA for the DAT-rack and the phone sales

So here I am....

the Ebbett's (or Ebbetts?) Field in Denver, there are so many incredible
high quality recordings from 1973 and 1974 around coming from that venue
(BTW, was it a club, a theatre, or what?), starting from Asleep at the

Does that place still exhist?
Who has spread around all these fantastic concerts?
I think that it would be very interesting to know the full story, hope

(06/26/93 The Bayou - Washington, D.C.) I Just finished transferring this
show to CDR and it is IMO one of the best shows DMB ever had. For those of
you who don't have it, it's a must have. Recorded with a D10 Pro behind John
Alazja (I know that is most likely spelled wrong). He taped most of the live
stuff for Remember Two Things. Just him and the D10 that night. Anyway it is
a unique recording due to it being recorded 1 channel audience and 1 channel
soundboard. The audience portion had several mics on stage and several
hanging from the board upstairs at the Bayou. He was also using a mixer
throughout the entire show. This sound is simply amazing, very intimate with
just a hint of the crowd and every instrument coming through perfect. The
Dead played RFK that same night and there were many tour buses at the Bayou
after the show. I really want to spread this show around and would like to
trade CDR's of similar quality stuff, I have many interests at present -
DMB, Radiohead, Steely Dan, and especially Floyd shows on CDR that I do not
own. (I'll trade for DAT's but cannot make DAT copies of this show so only
CDR's from me!) Please e-mail me at tkoenig@earthlink.net and send some
trade lists - this is a quick turn around thing since I have both sets
currently on my computer ready to burn to CD! Send your lists!!
