You know I wasn't gonna let that Mac crack (hey, I made a rhyme) go unchallenged. Seriously though, yes, I'm a Mac man, but due to the nature of my work (LAN admin), I'm also a Windows NT guru. I have a clone similar to yours (well, only the processor, all my drives are SCSI), and run dual-boot Win '98 and NT Server 4.0. I'll admit there's good WIn audio editing s'ware out there, but I guess your bragging point is the multitasking. Hell, I've had Bias Peak running Ionizer on an AIFF file, while burning a CD with Adaptec Jam with no problems and my Mac is an older PowerMac 7300/180 (no G3). But, that aside, I'm curious why you think your way of importing the audio to hard disk is more efficient than dumping digitally from DAT to hard disk (I use a Digidesign AudioMedia III card). I don't see your way as being more reliable either. Are you insinuating that your CD-R is a more reliable transport than a $1000 or more DAT recorder? Elaborate, oh great Win '98 guru/DAT Store salesman. Charles =========================================================================== Charles D. I suppose by writing this response I too am wasting bandwidth, but with two posts of this nature in this digest(see beasts CSN&Y comments) I just felt like responding. I don't figure that there is anything for me to gain as far as recording goes, from one persons personal oppinion of what is and what is not worth listening to. And for some reason or another this person is looking for some information about a Deck that a friend of his has loaned him. I don't have the answer, so I didn't reply. From: Paul Cho <pc132@columbia.edu> Subject: Soundforge question Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 21:45:51 -0500 (EST) Hello all, I know recently (within the month) somebody posted on how to normalize files and such on Soundforge. That person also said that there is some kind of noise reduction scheme where you sample a bit of the noise that you want to get rid of (for instance, the silence inbetween songs or something) and then you apply it to the rest of the file. Does anybody here know how to do this? I can't seem to find the original post and I checked the archives too. Thanks a bunch! -Paul
From: "jesse volner" <mentholiptus@hotmail.com> Subject: coaxial and optical....whats the difference? Date: Thu, 04 Feb 1999 19:19:30 PST This may sound very elementary, but whats the difference between coaxial and optical? I'm going to buy a sony home stereo, and it has 1 optical out(not enough). The DAT has coaxial digital in/out(R500). What do I do to run these pups into eachother?? and to a harddrive?? Also, what are prices like and how do I know what to look for and purchase without going broke? From: daniel kessler <danielk@simon.tomco.net> Subject: re:hard drive Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 22:26:12 -0500 I'm not a computer expert, but I do own or work on both platforms daily. SCSI should work for both machines, assuming that the pc has a scsi card. I'm not sure whether there are card to hard drive compatibility issues for the PC. Unfortunately, I don't think that it can work on both machines at once. What I mean is that they both use the same hardware, but format the drives differently. The PC is iso9600 and the mac is HFS format. So, you would have to format it for one, use it, and then format it for the other. Well, this is not quite the truth. You may be able to PC format it and then bring it over to the mac. If the mac has the correct extentions (I think that it's PC exchange and it comes with most versions of the operating system), it can easily read PC disks. I'm not sure if you'll run into problems recording to the PC disk on the Mac and I've not tried it, but I don't see any problems. You just need a SCSI drive, nothing special. They're pretty much all fast enough nowadays. I'm not sure that you can find a new 1 gig drive. The magazine that I'm looking through has 2 gig as the smallest. The 4.5 gig 7200 rpm drive is $230 internal, $290 external, so that fits well within your budget. If you get the one in the box, you don't have to worry whether the drive is compatible with your current box. I've burned fine with both a Quadra 600, which is a 68040 processor and a 486, so I know that both are fast enough. daniel

On paper, this looks like a great setup for single-point overt taping, but we don't listen to paper. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone with real-world experience with this setup, and in what acoustic conditions it works best. TIA, Th.B. Nast Seattle, WA tbn@eskimo.com

I have no affiliation but I was going to call him and get more info. If anyone can comment on these cabinets I'd be interested. He's based in San Francisco.
