But what you need to add is that you could have done all that with Windows
95, and you wouldn't have an annoying message pop up every time you move
the cursor over something. Why does Windows 98 pop up the word "Close"
when I wave the cursor over a window close "X" icon? As if anyone who
hasn't use a PC for thirty seconds this decade doesn't know the X closes
the window. Yet as far as I can tell there is no way to disable this idiot
feature. For more kicks, pull up Control Panel, Multimedia Properties,
Advanced. Aren't you glad that you get a pop-up window duplicating the
*exact* text of every entry in the list?
Anyway, I upgraded to 98 because I had been ill advised it would solve some
issues with my video card driver (it didn't) and after much hunkering
around I have managed to disable most, but not all, of the irritating
"features" (read: whiz-bang visual effects that look cool the first, and
possibly second, time you see them, but after that are slow and annoying)
but am now seriously considering reinstalling '95.
Rant off. ODC: My digital sound card did still work after the "upgrade",
but my ethernet card didn't.

With the Windows/Mac thing heating up once again, I thought I'd share this
piece that wound up in my mail recently.
A Precise Definition of Windows 95:
Windows 95(n) - 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16 bit patch to
an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprocessor, written
by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.
Sorry to waste the bandwidth but it's better than another "my mics are better

In general, a notable problem with the D-7/D-8 is the analog input, whether
going in at line or mic level. While this has been discussed some time
back, the simple issue is that IF the input level from microphones, pre-amp,
sbd, etc... is so hot that you must set the gain control dial below 4.2
there may occassional "pops," or "clicks" which sound like static. In this
case, it is necessary to either lower the level from the source or install
an in-line pad/attenuator.
Fortunately, this problem was corrected, or at least didn't resurface in the
design of the D-100/M-1.
Unfortunately, the lower level from the digital output riddles these
machines.
Using an outboard a/d converter solves the D-7/8 problem.

The CD-Rom that came with my G3/266 does DAE perfectly.
It is not SCSI.
On a (somewhat) related note, the 320 meg hard drive that came stock
with an old Quadra 610 I picked up cheap worked fine for burning
(though it would only fit about 30 minutes of audio).

Hi Again Everyone,
For an overview of the most popular pre-amps available, our website is a
good place to visit.
http://www.henge.com/~sncsns
When deciding on a pre-amp, you will need to consider sonic quality,
features, and possibly size, if you are seeking a unit for low-profile
recording endeavors : )
We stock and offer information on the Lunatec V2, Sonosax SX-M2, Beyer MV
100, and Aerco MP-2 microphone pre-amps, as well as complete recording
systems with DAT recorders, a/d converters, high-end cables, and all
accessories.
We welcome phone calls and email to discuss options in detail.

Is the tape you're copying 11 or 10? If it's 11, the deck _should_
make a copy, but the copy will be 10. If you can copy a 10 tape, then
you lucked out.

Zefiro Acoustics ZA2 Digital soundcard, one month old. Card has AES/EBU
and SPDIF coax and OPTICAL in's/out's. Card resamples all incoming data
from a DAT tape (48, 44.1, 32) at 44.1khz!! Card works great, I've been
using it for 3 weeks under Windows 98. I have the original box, manual,
and will give you SoundForge XP 4.5 with the card. If you have a burner,
PC, and a DAT deck, this is all you need!!!! I am asking $365 for the
card and software. I paid $425 one month ago, and searched around the
web for the best deal. I have chosen to go with a stand alone CD because
I do bulk CD burnings for local bands in my area. Any questions, email
me! PS: go see the Black Crowes this Winter/Spring, the only true Rock
N' Roll band left out there! Tape 'em also, they don't mind............

Kodak CD-Rs are good, but there's been a change in them you should know
about before ordering. The "older" batch can be recorded up to 6X and are
very stable, but aren't as reflective as most other major brands. This
causes problems in a few players (they don't play well in many Kenwood and
Sony car CD changers, for example). They do seem to play well in most
players, however. The newer CD-Rs actually say "Improved" in their
advertising, and can be recorded up to 8X. They're more reflective
(hopefully about as good as Mitsui golds!), and Kodak claims that their
improved phthalocyanine dye burns similarly to cyanine dye, a type of dye
that generally burns more thouroughly than phthalocyanine. (Cyanine dye is
used in gold/green and silver/blue discs). This should give you a lower
error rate right off the bat.
Interestingly, Kodak doesn't make their claim about 200+ year life
anymore--or at least I can't find anything about it on their website. I
couldn't even find any claims about it in regards to their older, 6X CD-Rs
on their revamped website--the most they'll advertise is 100+ years. (The
older discs are still advertised, since there's a lot of them still in the
pipeline.) Admittedly, they made the claim that it might last 200 or more
years if stored under very favorable conditions, and that it would be more
likely to last "only" 100 years under normal storage conditions. (I _think_
I keep my backup CD-R copies in "very" favorable conditions, but I may not
be alive to find out. :) AFAIK, this was also the result of one test, paid
for by Kodak. (The results are somewhere at http://www.cd-info.com .) I've
written Kodak twice to find out if their new dye formulation is as stable
as their old, and I'm still waiting for an answer after more than two
months. Ricoh is now making similar statements about their Platinum line,
claiming more than 200 years of archival life, which may be similarly shakey.
But back to your original question: Kodak's reputation for CD-Rs is very
good, and deservedly so. Kodaks are very good for archival, not just
because of their stable dye (at least on their 6X CD-Rs), but because they
use gold as well. (A good CD-R shouldn't oxydize, and not just because the
disc is well-sealed--most disc makers have learned their lesson since the
early 80s--but because most CD-Rs silver metals are treated against rust.
But it's a little extra insurance, when it absolutely has to last.) I
haven't yet tried the new Kodak 8X CD-Rs, but I've heard nothing but good
things about them from people who've used them--including very good
compatability among a wide range of CD players. Now that Mitsui appears to
be discontinuing their gold product, this may be a good alternative for
those who absolutely "have" to have gold.
Peace,
<> David

Thought I would respond to Jay's nature tape post:
I would urge anyone forturnate enough to live outside the sounds of
humans to take those DATs out and tape nature. I'll tell you from
experience that it's NOT easy to make a 2 hour tape of pure nature.
I recently worked on a sound design for a stage play that required a 2
hour running rain storm. I searched for quite a while and the best
we came up with was a sound effects CD at the local library that
contained only 2-3 minute sections of different kinds of rain. I
certainly learned how to use cut-and-paste over the course of this
project!
I had found a few people who were taping rain storms such as Jay
describes but we did not find any that were 'human' free. There was
always the usual stuff in the background, planes, microphone bumping,
wind noise, car alarms after big thunder claps, etc. Very
frustrating. I live in Chicago and there sure isn't anywhere around
here that I could possibly make a pure tape.
keep it up, Jay!

I just made a environmental type of tape. I live at the beach but

as I could.
Didn't want anything other than mother nature on the tape.
My question is twofold:
Is there any interest in tapes such as these?
I would be interested in trading for other like tapes ie.,
.. in a mountain range/valley on a breezy day as the trees throughout
the

a thunderstorm/rain shower
and other types of environmental sounds. What I have in mind is a full
length uncut tape recorded in one setting only per tape. All pure
mother

sound
bites but more something of the kind to listen/relax to.
