From: patrick <mcmulpm5@wfu.edu> Subject: Coax to optical cables? Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 12:09:02 -0500 (EST) I'm interested in the Opcode DATport (USB to coax connector for PCs) but I have a minidisc, not a DAT, and the MD has optical minijack inputs, not Coaxial. Does anyone know of a cable that goes from coax to miniplug optical?? thanks Patrick

NO WinNT is an entirely different OS to 95/98 (the more comon consumor OS) it handles device access in a different and more complicated way. From: seeleys@nytimes.com Subject: virus warning Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 15:04:45 -0500 That second virus ("It Takes Guts to Say "Jesus") is indeed a hoax. Folks, whevener a warning contains text that says: >This information was announced yesterday > morning from IBM; you REALLY should take the responsibility to verify the claim before forwarding it out to everyone you know. I just went to http://www.ibm.com , found a search box right there on the main page, entered "It takes Guts", and found an official statement from IBM that this is a hoax. It's at: http://www.av.ibm.com/BreakingNews/HypeAlert/Guts/ This took me all of 20 seconds to find. You can do the same thing at Microsoft's site whenever they are the supposed "source". If you can't find any reliable, independent verification (or haven't even bothered to try), then you shouldn't be forwarding these messages all over the net. Please everybody, VERIFY before mindlessly pressing the forward button with these things. My apologies to the poster - I am NOT trying to flame you, and offer my honest regrets because I know it sounds like I am. :-( I realize you were just attaching that second message as an afterthought to the first one about happy99.exe (which, btw, is a legitimate legitmate trojan horse). peace, Scott (please reply to: Seeley@pinn.net , not the addy above)
From: "David D. Rogers" <drogers@pobox.com> Subject: Local L.A. bands: Renfield and Lava Diva Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 12:22:16 -0800 A couple of weekends ago, I taped two great L.A. bands: Renfield at The Joint on Friday 1/29, and Lava Diva at Coconut Teaszer, Saturday 1/30. Tapes came out great, with the exception of a lot of audience noise/talking. Both are a little more than 45 minutes long, and both are available on CD-R. (Both shows are being traded with the bands' permission.) Renfield's at http://www.renfield.com ; think of it as No Doubt meets Kiss, with a heavy dose of SubGenius thrown in. Lava Diva is more grunge-rock, though I don't think that label does justice to their music. (They used to be listed at http://www.droolboy.com , but that site is down now. :( ) They were a selected participant of the Los Angeles Lillith Fair local talent search. Peace, <> David
From: don ross <don.ross@wrs.com> Subject: LA specific content - stolen D100 / mic / etc. Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 12:33:24 -0800 I had my Sony D100, Sony ECM 939LT stereo mic, Oades passive 7-pin-to-coax, digital cable, misc connectors, and the brown hip pack they were in stolen from my van last Friday night in LA. It was parked in the Hyatt Hotel parking lot (self park, middle level) across the street from the House Of Blues. Any information leading to their return would certainly be appreciated. Or, be on the lookout for a really good deal at some LA pawn shop! Ah, that little deck had been good to me. ++don I hate to make this post, but do as I guess that they had no idea of what they were taking and wont hold on to it long. The mic was engraved, so there may be hope.

From: ITCLaw@aol.com Subject: sales on ebay Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 16:31:12 EST Being a very recent victim of this whole discussion, I now feel quite compelled to respond. I understand and support those of you that want to crack down on this stuff on Ebay. It's very frustrating to see something you traded someone wind up on CD-R for auction. That being said, it frustrates me when I get busted for doing nothing wrong. I have bought many radio shows on CD and vinyl over the years....it's a cool way to get something collectible from your favorite artists that you can't pick up anywhere else. I'm guilty. I have paid money in the past for bootleg CDs. At that time, I didn't have a DAT player, and something in digital was a lot more attractive to me than something in analog. Even now that I am DAT equipped, I still like to get a hold of radio shows that are out there on the original broadcast discs.....they are just neat items to have in one's collection. Now, where Ebay comes in. Ebay has become an attractive way for me to thin out my collection of stuff that I no longer need, or to get rid of stuff, whatever the reason. I put up an Allman Brothers broadcast on Ebay last week. These were the original broadcast discs, with cues.....no CD-Rs here! That auction was cancelled today by Ebay, because they had been informed that it was a bootleg! I guess that stating "This is NOT a bootleg!" in the description isn't clear enough for some people? Having seen the raging debate here on the list lately, it leaves me very little doubt that someone on the list took it upon themselves to play policeman. Granted, it is a big world, so it might have been someone else. That being said, if it was someone on this list, I hope you are enjoying your little powertrip. Not to get biblical, but "let he who is without sin cast the first stone"! Again, I totally understand your point of view. It pisses me off to see something like "Van Halen 3-16-97-Pittsburgh"....and I might be compelled to complain about that! Just make sure that if if you are going to make an issue of something, that you understand what it is that you are making an issue of, and that it is in fact appropriate to make an issue out of that matter. Instead of going off to the record store to trade in discs, I can now put em on ebay.....it's a beautiful thing....as long as someone doesn't mess it up! Thanks for the space..... Please don't take this as a slam against any of you DAT-heads, I am just frustrated, and I look forward to seeing your feedback on this issue. Matt p.s. As long as I am going to get flamed, I might as well say that I am looking for any of the Metallica Garage Inc. broadcasts from that mini-tour. I heard a CD-R of the Detroit show that my buddy got from an analog source, and it sounded quite worthy!

There are places to talk about these things, but this ain't one of them. If people posted every bit of information that everyone needs to know to DAT Heads, it would drown out the space used to discuss the things this list was set up to discuss. I realize there are probably people on this list who don't subscribe to any other lists or newsgroups where they could hear this info; pitty on them, but have pitty for the rest of us too, who came here to discuss digital audio music recording. BTW, the second virus warning sounded like a definite hoax. Viruses can't be spread by email text (or at least, no one has demonstrated a way to do it yet). It's also just like a hoaxter to use big names like IBM and AOL to bolster his/her claims, without giving any specifics. It read a lot like the "Good Times" hoax, with a name change. Peace, <> David

From: Alex Douglass <douglass@cyberramp.net> Subject: DATPORT: No Go for NT5.0 Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 19:35:01 -0600 A couple of hours ago I got off the phone with Opcode. I asked them whether or not they planned on supporting Datport for NT5.0. (As you are probably aware NT4.0 doesn't support USB but 5.0 does/will.) Unfortunately, Opcode says they have no plan whatsoever to support the Datport with NT. They kind of acted like NT was no big deal. Just wondering if Datport appeals to anyone else out there using NT. I'd much rather have a USB solution over a PCI solution just from the noise factor alone. It looks like it will take an outside party to write USB drivers to get the Datport running on NT5.0. Does anyone want to take the challenge? If I knew how to write drivers I'd give it a shot - I may even offer to pay someone to get Datport running on 5.0 if another product isn't developed soon.. At a price of $159 and supporting varioius bitrates and wordlengths, the Datport seems like a good solution....I just wish it had an I2S (I squared S) interface and upcoming compatibility with 5.0.. Please post your comments. Regards, A. Douglass
From: "Matt Monaco" <fluffhead@mindspring.com> Subject: Digital Cable Question Reply-To: "Matt Monaco" <fluffhead@mindspring.com> Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 20:36:05 -0500 Hey folks- I've got a Tascam DA20mkii and a Sony D-8. Currenlty, the only digital cable I own is a Sony RK-DA10, which is ok, I guess, although it leaves my cloning possibilities very limited. I'm looking for either one cable that can do the following, or two seperate cables 1) allow a digital signal to come into my D8 and be passed along with a coax ouput 2) allow my D8 to send a digital signal (7pin-->coax) so I can clone DAT tapes I guess I'm probably going to need two seperate cables for those two functions. Somebody once mentioned the possiblity of having the RKDA10 modified so it can send and receive digital signal through the D8, but I'm not sure. I'm interested in pursuing all my options, but I'd definitely like to do this either having the RKDA10 modified, or in a way that the RKDA10 is still useful. It seems like having it modified is the best way to go, because otherwise $75 is wasted. Thanks for the bandwith, if you can help, that'd be great! -sorry this is so long... fluffhead Get Those Fluffballs off my Head.... ================================================================== Matt Monaco - fluffhead@mindspring.com http://www.mindspring.com/~pagey/home.htm - My Homepage http://www.mindspring.com/~pagey/phish - PHiSH Page ICQ: 11327541 ===================================================================

From: Michael Walter Connors <mwconnor@indiana.edu> Subject: DA20mkII vs Fostex D5 Date: Mon, 8 Feb 1999 21:00:59 -0500 (EST) I am planning on going digital and would like to get a home deck now, and a portable D8 later. Both decks are about the same in price and ranked close in the deck reliability survey, but how do they work with the D8, as a record deck. Do both totally defeat scums. I have heard that the D5 sounds a bit crisper. Any suggestions or comments on where and what to purchase first. mike connors mwconnor@indiana.edu
