Even way out in the boonies, you still get planes, cars and trucks,
dogs barking, etc. Unless there are a lot of trees around to absorb
the sound, you have to hike quite a ways to get someplace reasonably
quiet. The sound of the occasional car driving by can carry a long
way as can the sound of an airplane. Unlike photography, where you
can use vegetation, rocks, etc. to hide signs of civilization, you're
pretty much stuck using distance when dealing with sounds. If anyone
has any tricks they'd like to share, I'm all ears.

First generation soundboard of an amazing 2/8/96 show in Baltimore where
Jimmie's Chicken Shack (I have this set for trade too) opened for 311. An
absolute gem straight from the soundboard. This show is a 10! It's a 2
disk set. I'll trade CD-R copies for other good quality CD-R's.
Specifically, I'm looking for Pink Floyd (obscure), quality Steely Dan,
Radiohead, Jazz is Dead, early Grateful Dead, good electric blues (SRV, any
of the Kings, Cris Cain, Chris Duarte, Derrick Trucks, Allman Bros., etc.)
and any other stuff you think is cool (surprise me!).

Subject: Cable question
Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 23:19:54 -0500
This isn't entirely related to DAT, but I started thinking about this
because of some new cabling I'm planning on buying/making for my DAT and
stereo setup. For a digital cable, I know I can use 75 ohm coax with
rca connectors. Looking at some pre made cables, I can see that the
outer part of the plug is connected to the shielding of the cable. Now
what I want to know is, can I use shielded coax for a long audio cable
run? If so, do I still need to connect the shielding to the outer
connector of the rca plug? If I can't do this, then will the shielding
still do it's job since it's not grounded to anything? I have a long
analog run that I'm trying to stamp noise out of, and am trying to
determine how to make up a well shielded cable on my own. Lastly, does
anyone make rca "caps?" I'm looking for little rubber boots that fit
over the end of the rca jacks to keep them from corroding.

Does anyone know if the DATPort will do real-time resampling? I imagine
not, since it's pretty basic, but it would be great if it did! I'm
considering 'downgrading' to a DATPort, so if anyone is interested in a
used Zefiro ZA2 in perfect working order with the manual, box, drivers,
etc let me know.

mogwai and bardo pond will be playing at the bowery ballroom in nyc on
2/22 and i was wondering if anyone out there would be interested in
taping this show. mogwai is a rockin' (mostly) instrumental band from
scotland and this will be their only us show until this fall. bardo pond
are pyschedelic drone rockers from philly and should be debuting some new
material from their upcoming record. if you need more information on
these bands or whatnot, please let me know and i'll fill you in. i've
got plenty of mogwai and bardo pond to trade, so someone please speak up
on this one...

It'd be helpful if you gave us your budget. I'd think that the
Sennheiser (ME80?) shotgun would be a really good mic for your
application, being very quiet and having a decent reach, but it's
a bit more expensive than the Sony ECM-909. The TCD-D100 should
be a lot quieter than your cassette recorder, but you should take
care to protect it from the elements. DATs are a lot more sensitive
to dust and such than cassettes.

Anyone interested in recordings of natural habitats should check out
Wild Sanctuary (www.wildsanctuary.com). Bernie Krause has been
recording environmental sounds for about thirty years. He
estimates that 20% of his recordings were made in habitats that are
now extinct.
With regard to mechanical noise pollution. . .Krause says that he
typically records about 500 hours in a habitat to obtain just 15
minutes of unpolluted nature sounds, and he has worked in some
extremely remote areas.
The site also has several articles written by Krause about the
relationship between natural sounds and man-made music (articles on
other subjects also).
To keep this post relevant to Dat-Heads. . .Krause uses Mid-Side
micing.

Thanks to all who gave me advice on smart n friendly.
i ended up buying the SAF external scsi2 CD-4012.
Its a beutiful device or so the box says. It hasn't completely won me over
yet.
All these wierd things are happening in win98 now. Since i hooked the scsi
card and cd-r up i get messages during startup saying Windows Protection Error
Restart.
I restart and everyhting is fine. I also found out the scsi cable SAF gave me
was bad. After replace ment though i'm still having start up problems. I 'm
also having problems w/ Easy CD maker. I upgraded to 3.5b from thier site
but....still things are strange. The cdr or program gets stuck during testing
and sometimes during the first stages of writing. Maybe they should include an
option in the menu to make COASTERS as i know have a complete set of
attractice Maxwell coasters.
Any one have similar problems like this. I 'm using WIN98 on PIIMMX w/64mb ram
and a 6.4 western Digtal HD. Tips, Advice any thing? I;m not that civilized
nor do i have nice enough furniture to use coasters anyway. Thanks for your
time.

p.s sorry for the rant. i hope this helps any one looking into SAF or EZ CD

Not true NT SERVER is for servers, NT Workstation is for workstations

The D100 is a great little recorder, and perfect for the job, but be
aware:
The PCM-M1 is identical except that it defeats SCMS. This may be very
useful to you.
You will need to carry spare batteries.

Why not try it and see? After all, you already own one, so there's
nothing to lose.

The D5 is physically identical to the DA20mkII. However, the D5 has
superior I/O, with fully balanced analog and digital. It also has
SPDIF optical.
The D5's balanced analog inputs have a lower noise floor. I doubt
very much whether it really sounds crisper, however.
I don't know about connecting a D5 to a Sony D8: I have a PCM-M1,
which works perfectly with the Fostex D5.

I believe that Opcode makes a couple of other versions of the DATport.
For, I think, $250, there are DATports which handle optical inputs and
analog inputs as well. Its $100 more, but it might be better to spend
that then to fool with converting cables...
