From: Jesse Lackey <jesse@celestialaudio.com> Subject: DATport and NT5 Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 20:37:01 -0500 > A couple of hours ago I got off the phone with Opcode. I asked them > whether or not they planned on supporting Datport for NT5.0. (As you are > probably aware NT4.0 doesn't support USB but 5.0 does/will.) > > Unfortunately, Opcode says they have no plan whatsoever to support the > Datport with NT. They kind of acted like NT was no big deal. I find this very surprising, b/c I assume they are using the USB Audio Class support that Win98 has. (and Win95 DOES NOT have). NT5 will support the audio class, at least that was the claim from somebody at microsoft several months ago. Thus, opcode has in theory no work to do to support NT5. If they did write their own drivers, then they should be supporting Win95 as well as Win98, since the driver would be the same for both. > have a USB solution over a PCI solution just from the noise factor alone. It looks > like it will take an outside party to write USB drivers to get the Datport running > on NT5.0. Does anyone want to take the challenge? If I knew how to write drivers I'd > give it a shot - I may even offer to pay someone to get Datport > running on 5.0 if another product isn't developed soon.. I don't think you have any idea what a huge undertaking this is. The hardware design is trivial compared to the driver development. From: <gboss> Subject: New cdrs? Reply-To: gboss@voicenet.com Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 21:42:50 -0500 I was ordering some blanks today and they (ccss inc.) told me that they had brand new blanks in today which were silver/gold. I thought this was a cool idea so i decided to give them a try. Has anyone ever used them before? I'm hoping that they have the reflectivity of silver/blues and the durability/stability of gold/gold discs. From: Naiu@aol.com Subject: was datport now Windows 2000 Date: Tue, 9 Feb 1999 22:15:32 EST Yes as you can see it is true. Since the delays in NT 5.0 where due to Novells newest sever client microsoft decided to do something right and is combining Consumer with Enterprise OS. So you should not have the problems noticed before with dirvers with NT not being supported. Most of this is due to the fact that microsoft spends way too much on operating systems that look alike and function similarily with one being a bad bug and the other a true multifaceted OS. This has been around as the rumor for about now 6 months. As far asa I am concerned being an MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) with NT it is only right since I dont think companies would have upgraded to a new OS so soon after the introduction of NT 4.0 and the fact that Y2K is around the corner. One thing at a time. But I think the OS is heading in the right Direction and you shouldnt have a bit of a problem compatibility wise as it will be full USB Supported, ohh Yess HOT swaps !! I don't mean to be a lame-o, but a few weeks ago someone posted the URL for a great page with setlist links to at least 50 or so bands. I thought I bookmarked it, but apparently not. Could that person be so kind as to post it again. Thanks much. eric

Reply-to: jpjpco@megsinet.net Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 21:48:14 -0600 What are the 'top of the line' or industry standard digital sound cards with digital and analog 'in and outputs' for Windows 95? Also are there certain cards that are better at converting from 48 to 44.1? Friends of mine are telling me that not only do you need a good SCSI drive but also an external hard drive to make the system run smoother. Is the extra external hard drive necessary? Thanks for your help John
From: Jeff Swick <swick@the.link.ca> Subject: nature recordings Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 22:14:25 -0700 i see a couple of potings of late re nature recordings;here is my experiences. Up at the lake in the summer;I used to get up around sunrise to take video of deer. As we are fortunate to be in the middle of fully treed lakefront we are relativly free of"howlies" about 1/2 before sunrise;I placed a sony ecm 999 a sony d7 and sony sbm1 next to a sony mz1 and sony ecm907. the best advice i can give there is to set your levels by headphones and meters and just walk away. In listening back it was easy to visualise sunrise as there was a sudden explosion of noice...birds,ducks etc. I found that the hardest thing to do was record the sound of poplar leaves with out it sounding like analogue tape hiss. The other problem was the odd farmer fireing up the tractor....easier to fix with the mini disc. Another intresting expeirment was to place the 999 in a feild of clover. The 999 being a stereo mic made for some intresting headphone listening of bees;enought to make a person squirm. As well the 999 has terrific bass response and made the bees sound very large indeed on my psb stratus golds.

You certainly don't need an _external_ hard drive. A _second_ hard drive, used only for audio, makes life easier (it's easy to keep it defragged, for one thing). Seth

From: "Jackson Gibbs" <jackson@hosemart.com> Subject: Down Sides of PCM-M1? Date: Tue, 9 Feb 1999 21:47:05 -0800 Hey all... I'm on the verge of getting back into DAT and want one of my decks to be a portable. I'm currently looking to the PCM-M1 from Sony. I formerly owned a D8 which I didn't have much trouble with. I've read all the info on the spec sheets and whatnot... What I'm wondering now is, for those who own or have owned the PCM-M1, what are your great likes or dislikes of the deck, if any, and if you've owned other models how do you think it compares? Thanks, Jackson Gibbs

Please post your comments. Regards, A. Douglass >> The advertised $159.95 price may not be what you'd have to pay as the (as shipped) List price increased from $199 to $249 to cover actual manufacturing cost increases of the additional circuitry needed in the DATport to be fully functional and pro-solid in operation. Still worth the estimated $179-$249 if USB port digital is your best or only (for laptop) option. I haven't yet verified whether NT5 USB support is a non-issue with Opcode as reported. If so, it would seem a shame for a pro audio device to be so limited for using with a (hopefully) more stable pro WIN/NT5 OS. Digest #760 Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1999 02:33:56 EST In a message dated 2/8/99 8:46:25 PM Pacific Standard Time, DAT-Heads- Request@fedney.near.net writes: << ------------------------------ From: Gerry Morgan <gerrym@pobox.com> Subject: Portable DAT Recorder Recommendation? Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 15:24:06 -0700 (MST) Hello, I'm planning to buy a DAT recorder to record the sounds of the desert birds and animals where I live (near Tucson, AZ). I currently have a Sony WM-D6C analog cassette recorder and a Sony ECM-909 microphone, and the recordings I've been making are kind of OK, but there's too much tape hiss for my liking. So I'm wondering whether a Sony TCD-D100 would me a good machine to upgrade to. I need something very portable, so that I can take it out hiking with me. I'm also wondering whether the ECM-909 microphone is really good enough. Can anyone offer any thoughts on the Sony TCD-D100, or alternative portable DAT recorders. Thanks, Gerry >> The D100 or M1 is excellent for this purpose, but the stereo mics you've chosen are not quiet or give a good stereo ambient 'feel' to be worth the effort. Nature sounds recording is a very special application that requires a very low noise 'ambient stereo' type microphone and there's just a few that work well for this purpose and most are too expensive to amateur purposes. Neumann RS-191 (about $4500) is reported excellent for being low noise, but for a lot less, Sonic Studios DSM-1S/H + WHB windscreen ($675) will give much more satisfactory ambient stereo imaging, but at just a bit more mic noise than the Neuron. Using the LiteGUY ($500) mic baffle is an option for mic stand mounting allowing you to get clear of being part of the microphone system for long periods of time. See these URLs on the site (also listed below) for more details on this system and E-mail me for answering further questions doing nature recordings. http://www.sonicstudios.com/dsm.htm http://www.sonicstudios.com/access.htm http://www.sonicstudios.com/liteguy.htm Regards in Sound & Music Recording, Leonard (& Debbie) Lombardo ======================================== Sonic Studios(tm)..."Making Audio History With DSM(tm) Microphones" TEL: 541-459-8839 /\ FAX: 541-459-8842 /\ USA Free: 1-888-875-4976 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Informative WEB SITE: HTTP:// WWW.SONICSTUDIOS.COM A better wish... Its a beutiful device or so the box says. It hasn't completely won me over yet. All these wierd things are happening in win98 now. Since i hooked the scsi card and cd-r up i get messages during startup saying Windows Protection Error Restart. I restart and everyhting is fine. I also found out the scsi cable SAF gave me was bad. After replace ment though i'm still having start up problems. (snip'd) Pete p.s sorry for the rant. i hope this helps any one looking into SAF or EZ CD creator. and to all the dats heads out thier. Keep using DATS thier much easier than burning CDs. -- >> Disclaimer: Windows systems can be very 'fun' and even the following related experience/suggestions may not apply at all to your current problems. While I have the exact same 4012 S&F drive and also have problems, it's with the Easy CD program that can't even find the CD-R drive most of the time. The drive itself is about as good as it gets with CD-R. The most stable and consistent CD-R software came bundled with my (2'd system) Traxdata CDR4120 drive and is the CeQuatrat (German software company) WinOnCD 3.5 OEM version. This program really is day/night over any I've tried and has me a very satisfied Guy using either the 4012 or 4120 drives with virtually no coasters on a P200 (and PII Laptop) WIN95 converted to WIN98 systems that are anything but solid acting. Consider reinstalling some of the software/CD-R drivers (with all other nonessential WIN programs shut down) and keeping any and all programs (including Stay & Resident programs like virus, Norton, ... etc., maybe including screen savers & auto schedule stuff) turned off when working on CD-R burning. With the bundled CeQuatrat WinOnCD software the other system activity considerations might be more a non-issue.
