From: dan clark <clarkda@one.net> Subject: BOOTLEGGER Part III Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1999 18:42:09 -0500 (EST) All right, here's everything that's known. His current e-mail is friedones@webtv.net. His alternate or old address he posted to dat-heads with is l8rjerry@webtv.net. Presumably his name is David Dimartino. His CURRENT web sites appear to be but not limited to: http://www.webspawner.com/users/dats http://www.webspawner.com/users/muledat http://www.webspawner.com/users/dead2 http://www.webspawner.com/users/whya3rd http://www.webspawner.com/users/nodeadhere He's been kicked off of various music groups for 3:1 trades and the like but has not been heretofore engaged in the business of selling CD's. And as to our poor analoger who blew the whistle, he is still getting threatening letters from PUNKASS BOOTLEGGER in the order of the following: "duh you piece of shit heres to you and your new girl friend asshole!"
From: "Dan Bridges" <dbs@rpdata.net.au> Subject: Re: Nature Recordings Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 09:50:30 +1000 I used to do PCM recordings in semi-swamps, bushland and rainforest areas about 15 years ago. I used to use a Sony PCM-F1 digital processor and a matching SL-F1E video recorder. (The recorder would sit atop the PCM unit.) I ran these battery powered with 3 identical 12v Nicd packs. I could record for up to 2 hrs. I could get 2 hrs out of 1 battery pack for the video recorder and 1hr per battery pack for the PCM unit. I used Nakamichi CM-700 mics with cardioid capsules, crossed at 120 degrees. I would lug around three pieces of luggage: A hard plastic case which I lined with foam and in which I carried the PCM & video units side by side with a piece of cut foam between them to stop them rubbing; a 10-pin bowling bag that held the 2 mike cases, folding mike cross-piece stand, 3 large nicd batteries, headphones and a beta video cassette; a telescopic camera tripod to use as a mike stand. I got some lovely result. One morning in summer I went to a swampy area near a creek at 4am. It had been raining that night and the frogs were in song. In the first few minutes I got a little sizzle in the mics from either the humidity or very slight rain but that was the end of that problem. It was amazing to hear different hungry baby birds starting up from different lateral and depth locations in the soundfield; how as you sat and listened over the space of about 90 mins different sounds would come to your attention then be replaced by something else. That particular creek was only 200m away from my home in a southern suburb of Brisbane. Although a freeway was about 2-3Km away, traffic noises was not a problem although I picked up the sound of the paper delivery man driving around the local streets and the thud of the papers as they landed on the lawns. I used to find it amusing that I would use this (then) high tech equipment to sit in my lounge in suburbia and relax to the sounds of nature. I do not have a portable DAT unit (lack of money - married now with young children) but if I did it would be certainly be easier to lug about than what I used to carry. Oh, if your record in mozzie-infected areas, as well as putting repellent on yourself, don't forget to put some on your mics (check for plastics and repellent compatibility first) - the mozzies could smell my sweat on the mics windshields and sometimes I would get them buzzing around them. When listening back through headphones it's hard to resist the temptation to slap the side of your head to kill a mozzie. Cheers, Dan Bridges.

In other words, could I run a pair of ultra dma IDE hard drives, >and get a scsi card (adaptec, ~$50-100) just for the burner. Both, you'll get slightly better performance form a SCSi hard disk over IDE (Mainly in burst transfer), also IDE can only comunicate with one device at a time (on a single controler) where as SCSI can comunicate with multiple devices at the same time, which would be an advantage when using a CR-r. (though generally this won't cause any problems with a IDE setup) Having a CD-r on a seperate controller would be better than having it on the same on as the HDD's >Would it be preferable to get two 6.4 GB ultra-dma IDE drives, or to >get one ~6.4 GB SCSI drive for about the same price. Probably the two IDE's (more space, which is a benifit when doing CD-r's), the performance for a SCSi disk isn't generally that much greater than an IDE disk. >4.What is 'disk at once' I keep seeing. Does this refer to the schwag >adaptec software? THe entire CD-r is writen in one go, with out the burners lazer being turned off between tracks. this remove the need for start and End blocks(when the lazer is turned off between tracks) , which cause a short silance between the tracks when played. -- Matt Matt@shortsharpshock.demon.co.uk OUT-THERE MiniDisc<-->DAT<-->CD Audio Duplication Http://wWw.shortsharpshock.demon.co.uk/audio/index.html

There are two different 32 kHz formats, LP and SP. All decks can use LP; only some can use SP. I don't believe that the DAP1 can write SP; I don't know if it can read it. Seth

From: Robert Ian Hoffman <rih5@columbia.edu> Subject: CDR help Reply-To: Robert Ian Hoffman <rih5@columbia.edu> Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 02:28:34 -0500 (EST) I've been having some CDR problems lately and hopefully someone can help. First off, I have a Plextor 12/20 reader, Teac R55S 4x12, and an Adaptec 2910 SCSI card. I've been using CDRwin to burn. My computer is a dell pentium 200 with 32 MB ram and some sort of IDE hard drive (which I just defraged). When I first set the stuff up I had a problem with it having a write failure about 8% into burning. I toggled some things, followed the suggestions given by CDRwin and the CDR FAQ. After that didn't work, I disabled Norton Antivirus and everything started working. At a later time I forgot to disable NAV and it stopped after about 8%...I figured this was the original problem. Except for the one time when I didn't disable NAV I haven't had any problems and I've burned some 10-15 discs...until now. CDRWin is giving me a write failure (in test mode) around 8-11% into burning. Three attempts ago when I tried it worked...but this was after repeated failures and the last two times it failed to burn (test mode) successfully. One other thing is that right now I'm attempting to burn a different disc and it's at 60% with no problems. The disc I was having problems with was 73 min. long and had 22 tracks. I couldn't see any visual damage to the disc. Which is another thing, CDRWin wouldn't load more than 12 tracks at a time. I had to select the first 12 and then the second 10 to load it into the DAO listing. Is this a common occurance? Thanks for all your help, I appreciate any input. rob hoffman rih5@columbia.edu ps In the past I've been able to run e-mail and Netscape while burning with no problems. I don't think this has been causing the failures.

They're made by Mitsui, but they're not identical to the Mitsui brand (or the other brands that Mitsui OEMs for that aren't 1X optimized). Do you know if these are still good for 2X or 4X burning--have your or any of your customers (or anyone else for that matter who might be reading this) used them for that speed? Does HHb have anything to say on the matter? [This was sent to Klay and posted to the list.] Thanks, <> David

From: Jean-Luc Bruyelle <jl_bruyelle@compuserve.com> Subject: Matrix capabilities of the DAP-1? Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 06:59:33 -0500 >> The da-p1 from tascam will take 4 imputs at once. you can use the 2 xl >> inputs for mics and the rca inputs for a sdb feed. the da-p1 is supposed to >> do the matrix mix for you. >> >> Wouldn't time delay be a factor in this? Possibly, as the RCA inputs feed the same path, just downstream of the XLR input that incorporates a good deal of circuitry. Also, if the latter inverts the signal polarity mixing might be a problem. Would need to actually measure the delay between them to be sure. But of course, since you want to record the same signal, once straight from the electronics and once via an (usually long) acoustic path, I'd say the problem is not nearly as much the delay in the DA-P1 inputs as the delay caused by the PA-mic distance. Another concern is that the level balance between the XLRs and the RCAs (two inputs, just one pot, see ?). If your purpose is to add some ambience in your recordings, then you need to adjust this balance, and therefore an external mixer is mandatory. Jean-Luc.
From: Jean-Luc Bruyelle <jl_bruyelle@compuserve.com> Subject: dap1 and 32kHz Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 06:59:30 -0500 As a side note to Gordon Gidluck's reply, the DA-P1 can record at 32 ksps but only with 16 bits / sample, which is a standard DAT mode running tape at normal speed (the 'LP' 32ksps mode runs at half speed with 12 bits / sample). It cannot read LP tapes either. Jean-Luc.
