From: Jazdout@aol.com Subject: a smart n friendly saga Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 07:24:07 EST Well in my ongoing effort to solve this problem i have gotten a few tips of advice and tried a few things my self. I thought maybe the problem i having was related to EZ CD creator. I tried WINCD and strange enough burned an audio cd on the first time out. It was the second time that the problems started. The CDR (SAF 4012) would indicate that it was searching for data. Then i would get na error that WINCD was unable to set the recording speed or something like that. Than upon trying to close out the program it would freeze. Sooo. I don't think its the burner or the program but the drivers running the CDR. Any one out thier using a SAF external SCSI 4012 what ver. of Firmware are you using w/ what adaptech scsi driver.? thanks Pete sorry for lack of dat content. But you people are so dam helpful and knowledgeable this is the best place for me to look to advice. THNX again.

IDE-type drives are more than adequate, but >they're also slow. (They're fast enough for transfering data to CD, but >they might test your patience when you're doing digital audio editing.) This is simply untrue. There is very little performance difference between IDE and SCSI hard disks of the same internal data transfer rate. The difference between SCSI hard disks and IDE hard disks is the interface - nothing more, nothing less. There may have been a time when higher-performing drives were not available in IDE versions but this is not the case today. Your speed is primarily limited by factors that have nothing to do with the interface, e.g. rotational speed, interleave, seek speed. An IDE interface requires CPU cycles to control it. A SCSI interface does not. The result is that IDE hard drives drain system resources. But the degree to which this affects performance in a single-user workstation is minimal - and I guarantee you that any time you spend waiting for your hard disk, either IDE or SCSI, on a PC faster than about a Pentium 60, will be because of the physical limitations of the hard disk itself, be it SCSI or IDE, not because you've run out of CPU cycles. The primary advantage of a SCSI drive comes in multiuser environments because the interface is designed to process requests in such a way as to minimize head seek time. But in a single user environment, particularly audio editing where you'll simply be copying big files around, this offers little benefit for the large price premium. That is, there's not enough complexity in the type of hard disk activity to benefit from this. You won't be actually accessing more than a couple files at once. Far better to get two IDE hard disks - so your large file transfers occur between two disks, eliminating head seek time altogether. Jamie

The band's forthcoming TVT album, Apple Venus Vol. I, won't see the light of day in stores until Feb. 23, but you can find a promo version of it on www.eBay.com, the Internet auction house, for anywhere between $30 and $90. Ten promo copies of the album -- most of which were only distributed within the music industry itself -- have gone for a total of $513 since the end of January. The promo CDs lack liner notes, finished artwork, or even a jewel box. Despite realizing that he is losing potential income from the illegal sales, XTC frontman Andy Partridge sees the lighter side of the issue. I have been somewhat blownaway at the quality of DAT as most of you can relate to thinking back to when you began listening to DATs. Anyways, I am looking for any kind tapers that have D>D capability to do a B&P or two from your list. I would be very grateful and I promise to spread the music since my friend has a DA-20, so we will be able to clone once we get the required cables. Email me if you can help me out. Thanks, Marco
From: Kkc414@aol.com Subject: Mystery Hendrix Tape???? Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 10:45:17 EST I just received a clone of a Hendrix tape and I'm trying to identify it. The tape is labeled "Acoustic Home Recording 1968". I couldn't find anything in the Hendrix data bases on the net. The recording is of Jimi alone with an acoustic guitar at first and plays some nice mellow tunes. I don't have the set list, but he played a very nice version of "hear my train a comin'". He later switches to an electric guitar, played very clean, with no distortion. Throughout the tape you can hear papers ruffling and I think the telephone rings a time or two. The sound quality is very nice, which leads me to believe the dat was transfered from an analog tape that was close to the master. Any ideas on what this might be? Thanks, Kevin

Thanks for the help.Kristian Hi Kristian and all, The problem you are describing is quite rare as we have never heard of this with the equipment you have identified. Typically, the biggest problem we see with Nak mics is simply low batteries, which may result in hiss. While we are quite fond of Audio Magic cables here at Sonic Sense, I can not gaurantee that they would solve your problem. I would expect that the Monster Cables are equally well shielded. Nonetheless, it does sound like you are having a problem with RF interference and inadequate shielding is often the source of this. Perhaps a cable change, whether to Audio Magic or not, would at least help you the problem. As we have sold quite a few MV100's and Nak CM-300's to be used together, I don't think the solution will require transformers, although is it well understood that unbalanced lines are more susceptible to EMI, RF, and other extraneous noise problems. Please let me know how I may assist with any future recording needs. Wouldn't time delay be a factor in this? =========================================== Yep. . .you'd probably want a controlled delay on the SBD feeds, w/ the time in mS settings equal to the actual _measured_ delay of the room you're in. Rule of thumb, 1 mS = 1'0" distance, in dry still air. From: "clnln@thecore.com" <clnln@thecore.com> Subject: Erasing DATs? Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 11:17:31 -0500 Hello DAT-Heads... I'd like to know if DATs can be erased and used over without the problems that re-using analog tape causes. I'm asking because I'm going to need to record a radio broadcast when I'm not at home, so I'll need to leave it recording for the entire length of the tape. I'll be transferring the radio show to CD-R anyway, so it seems like a shame to waste a whole tape for a ~30 minute show. How would I go about erasing that tape? Thanks. From: "clnln@thecore.com" <clnln@thecore.com> Subject: Soundboard distortion in recording Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 11:22:52 -0500 Hello again, I have one more question. I recently recorded an acoustic guitarist via his RCA analog outputs on his soundboard. It wasn't a big fancy soundboard, by any means... it was more of a portable mixer. There was a set of drums (not regular drums, but some type that one plays with their hands), the guitar, and his vocals miked. The levels peaked on my Sony M1 at about 1 dB. I guess I got lucky that it didn't hit 0! I had the signal going into the M1's analog input, at the Line In setting, with the recording knob at about 6.5 or 7. My question is this. At anything above 4 dB or so, there is a small amount of distortion in the sound. Why is this happening? Is it just because of his mixer, which we actually had to hit to get it to turn on before the show? Or did I do something wrong recording it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. From: "Larry Millett" <lmillett@anet-stl.com> Subject: DAO, DAE, M-O-U-S-E (CDR content only) Reply-To: "Larry Millett" <lmillett@acm.org> Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 11:03:09 -0600 I've seen a lot of posts recently on DATHeads and GDH regarding CDR software. I've burned a lot of CDRs over the past year or so, and the two crucial features for trading music CDRs are * Disk At Once (DAO) burns, and * Accurate Digital Audio Extraction (DAE). DAO is a hardware issue. A few older drives do not support DAO; I'm not aware of any current models that do not support DAO. If your drive supports DAO, make sure you know how to accomplish DAO burns with your software. Accurate digital audio extraction (DAE) is the hardest part of cloning CDRs. Inaccurate DAE manifests as pops and clicks and missing chunks on cloned CDRs. The most frustrating aspect is that most DAE software will report successful extraction even with a wildly inaccurate read. This means that you must do silly things like repeated extractions until you get two identical files. Some time ago on DATHeads, I saw a post describing a program called Exact Audio Copy which reads audio bits like data (wow, just like a computer!). The program is available for a postcard at http://studserver.uni-dortmund.de/~su0165/eac.html, and provides accurate DAE from (almost) any CDR or CD-ROM drive. It dynamically adjusts extract speed in 0.1x increments to get the best possible speed while still guaranteeing accuracy. With my Plextor UltraPlex, I consistently get extraction speeds of 4x to 5x. A $39 40x CD-ROM will probably have an effective extraction speed of 0.2x (YMMV). EAC includes a rudimentary WAV editor, and generates Cues sheets for CDRWin. I used Adaptec for all my cloning for months, and it's basically good, but it simply does not guarantee accurate clones. I recently switched to EAC and CDRWin, and I now feel confident that all my clones are 100% accurate. As far as I know, EAC is the only software available to guarantee 100% accurate DAE. Very highly recommended. Win95/Win98/NT only.

From: PanicWSP@aol.com Subject: moe. problems...need an answer... Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 12:41:57 EST Dear Friends... I haven't seen this post come through. so sorry if it is a repeat....here goes... would love to get this problem under control before i tape moe. friday night.... ============================================================================== ============================================ Dear Friends... I am the proud new owner of Sennheiser ME 64 cardiods. I taped Bela at the HOB at myrtle beach friday night (first night running a rig...and damn was it fun) my tapes came out o.k. i guess...but i have a few problems i would like to get worked out before i tape moe. in Charelston Friday night. I ran the Sennheisers straight into my D-100 and my peaks were around -4db. My tapes came out kind of tinny on the high end with touches of distortion sounding noise. The bass was perfect, tight and you could feel it in your chest. I didn't run the bass roll off on the mic caps. and I went mic in with the 20 db pad on the d-100. So my quandry is....what do i need to do to get my tapes "right"? I was thinking maybe i should go line in to avoid the distortion on the high end? or were my levels too high? I never came close to 0db...but the decks that patched out of me were all around 12db or slightly higher. so my levels were higher than theirs...but no where near topping out. Was this "brickwalling? or was it just the crappy pre-amp on my D-100 and I would benefit by cutting it out by going line in? Another option i thought of was the mics possibly running hot straight from the Sennheisers....a guy there told me to send them back and get them turned down....but he didn't have to do that for sometime when he got his....it eventually became a problem....so any suggestions? Please tell me I am doing something wrong, and they aren't my mics...'cause I am not happy with the tapes I made. I was about 25 feet from the stage, dead center on the floor. Also, i have some weird noises on the tapes when people would bump my stand (The HOB oversells that place everytime by about 400 people) how much do shock mounts cut that out? It seems like they would help, but do they totally take that out? or is it mostly from vibrations from the music? How much can i expect to pay for shockmounts for my Sennheisers? If you could respond to me that would be great...i want to get some feed back before i tape moe. i would love to come away from that show with nice tapes.... blue skies... kevin
