In the process of cleaning out my rooms and weeding out my tape and CD
collection, I found a couple of what I think to be uncirculated gems...
They are either directly from DAT or are my masters. I figured this
would be as good a place as any to get them out into circulation. The
first two things I'm offering up are 2 Rollins Spoken word shows that
I've taped. The first is from 3/5/93 The Avalon in Boston. It was
recorded using a hand held walkman style recorder, but surpassingly the
sound is really good. Excellent material, Henry was in rare form that
night. The second show was recorded at the Umass Fine arts center
12/2/96 using a Sony 909a -> D6. Both show require 2 60M DATs (they
probably could fit on 90s but I'd rather use 60s) . I'm not sure what
kind of response I'm going to get, if there is a lot I may run a tree.
If you are big into Henry and want to forward this to a mailing list or
NG that's fine (spinning the shows on analog is no problem). Otherwise
drop me a line with your list and we'll either trade or B+P. I'd just
like to finally see these shows circulate among more than just my
friends.

I have extra copies of the shows listed in the subject. They are on Maxell
tapes, and both sound very good.
Schoeps sources on both.
I'm looking for mmw, or Phish in return.

Hi,
After being shut out twice at ticketmaster I am desperately searching
for tickets to either of the Southern California shows. I will pay up
to 75 per ticket and hook up the seller with a tape from the show and
any other 3 shows from my list. Any help would GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,

It is definately in tapers' interest to have an anti-bootlegging ethic; if
people go over the edge sometimes (which IMHO, your examples didnt' show),
I still think it's a whole heck of a lot better than a don't-care attitude.
If tapers didn't care, then a lot fewer bands would allow it. Those that
_still_ don't allow it can rest a little easier knowing that most tape
heads won't sell their shows, and it possibly keeps them from becoming more
anti-taping than they already are. Having this ethic also means a little
less harassment by the RIAA. I personally see this whole e-Bay thing as
nothing more than people trying to keep the hobby as clean as possible.
>Fact is that bootleggers have always helped circulate music, and that is
>a FACT.
This aspect of bootlegging is _seriously_ overvalued. Most bootlegs sound
like s**t musically and sonically, cost an arm and a leg to buy and the
money often ends up supporting organized crime (guess who runs the
bootlegging scene in Italy?). The fact is that tape traders have never
needed bootlegs to get music circulated. Sometimes, a superior bootleg
becomes a heavily-traded (and superior) traded tape, but that's a rare
exception.
I think the bottom line for artists and tape traders is: do we really want
people to make money off of someone else's work? For both artists and the
people who tape as a non-profit hobby, I think the answer is a resounding
"no".
Peace,
<> David

Over the years of observing the same sorta comments (the kind you are reacting
to, not the one's you wrote), I couldn't agree more.
However, what I've concluded is this: "Tape traders" who hate bootleggers are
mostly very cheap <Bev Crusher>'s, who resent having to *pay extra* (Gee, it's
more than the cost of a blank tape!) for something that they might want.
However, as you point out, what's the difference between a "stealth audience"
recording and a crappy CD that some other moron is selling for $20?

I agree in principle, and I certainly have a high end system, but my point
remains; for short digital connections, RCA coax, one reaches the point of
diminishing sonic returns very quickly.

I don't think too many people here really care if it pisses you off, if you
don't want people "whining" to the digest why did you send this post? The
Ebay debate was arguably debated on the wrong forum. But the person whose
name has been mentioned lately (Mr. Dimartino) has leeched off the members
of this list by arranging trades by posting to it, so whether you think it's
right or not it is important to let the folks on this list know of his
character.

That would certainly be a valid argument if it were the case, but the bands
that comprise the majority of this person's list are bands that do allow
taping, which makes him all the slimier. You might wish to direct your
complaining to the individuals you disagree with rather than insulting the
"legitimate" traders on this list as a whole.

In generally, having a SCSI card for the CDR, and EIDE hard disks,
will work great. Simply having the CDR and HD on *different*

There are many pitfalls which will cause distorted sbd tapes, but
you seem to have avoided all of them. So, it is very possible the
distortion you hear was actually coming from the soundboard.
Here are things which would cause distortion:
1. Using a D7/D8 from XLR (or even 1/4" TRS) outputs on a
soundboard -- the level is too "hot", and turning down the record
volume WILL NOT HELP. You must lower the signal level at the
soundboard, or use some sort of attenuation (resistors) in your
cable.
2. Using the Radio Shack XLR>1/4" mic transformer. Not proven
to cause distortion, but not a good idea - this transformer was
designed for "mic" levels, not +4dB sbd - and also, transformers
alter frequency response. Cheap transformers (like this one) alter
it a lot.
3. "Set & Forget" levels -- some people can't/don't check levels
during sbd recording, or don't realize how loud a vocalist can
"peak" when you are recording from *before* the main compressors
(which limit the dynamics in the room; ie, aud tape, but rarely or
never are in the SBD path taken by tapers).
GOOD NEWS:
The M1/D100/ (and SBM-1) line inputs have been redesigned, so
they do not distort even if you have to turn the volume way down.
(Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the mic input -- more
testing needs to be done, but the mic input on the M1/D100 *will*
distort - ditto for the Tascam DA-P1 - in many real-world micing
situations).
If you want to record from a Soundboard to a D7/D8, you MUST do
one of the following to avoid distortion:
1. Use RCA "tape" outputs, or the Headphone output, on the
soundboard.
2. Use a soundboard jack with an independent level control on the
soundboard - set it to "5" or less.
3. Use attenuators - either home-built or commercial (not an easy
item to find) - in your cabling between the soundboard and the
D7/D8 line input.
4. Use your own mixer between the sbd and the D7/D8.

Hello everyone i taped Bela last{12th}its tape from your seat ,which the
best taping location there is provided you have the right seat! He does two sets
the first set is just under an hour and the second is just over an hour and half
a 90 meter did fine for me.The Bela Crowd is great, sure beats the Dave+Tim
shows i,ve been too"The downside is the sound guy he,s kind of a tight ass
about mic stands" i don,t know if this is because the lack of sex or his
just a moody basterd" i,m 6' and we could run the mics at head level
sitting down" My stand was about 2 inches above my head sitting down and he
yelled at me twice to lower or he,d shut me down{ha,ha}Anyway it was a great
crowd {everyone remained seated the whole show}and a great show Bela and the
tones are well worth the ticket price"Hope this offers some help for future

I have a Sony M-1 and had a similar problem, but only with Sony DGP
DAT's(60M). Basically, the DAT tape would start to Fast Forward or Rewind
after I hit the FF or RW button, then UNLOAD appeared on the Display and
the tape would stop. Every once in a while the same thing would happen when
I pressed play. These DAT's(Sony DGP's) are known for their inferior shells
and the M-1/D-100 doesn't handle the DAT's well, at least from my
experience. I recommend staying away from these DAT's with a small portable
Sony deck. You'd think that Sony would make better shells that are problem
free with their small portables, but that's not the case. I use Maxell HS-4
unlabeled and labeled 60m DAT's with no problems whatsoever. Try using a
different brand of DAT tape to see if you still have the same problem.
