Yes, there are lots of SHWAG products in Japan, but there are also a huge number of true audiophile items, too. You may be referring to the situation about 25 years ago... Just couldn't resist that comment. JH
From: Earlehead@aol.com Subject: RE: Get this BOOTLEGGING SHIT OFF DAT-HEADS Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 23:18:59 EST From: willard robinson <willr@star.net> Subject: Get this BOOTLEGGING SHIT OFF DAT-HEADS Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 08:59:11 -0500 The hypocracy of this list is only matched by the stupidity of some of its members. This is not a 'report bootlegers list' - if someone wants to sell you music I could really give a crap - whining to the list is not what this forum is all about. If you don't want to buy his music just say NO - deriving sympathy/ self importance by obnoxious posts to this list only increase its noise and PISS ME OFF!!! The RIAA would shut this whole list down if they thought they could, and anyone who thinks they are friends or thinks it is ok to 'narc' others out should do so on their own twisted moral grounds and not the 'music is free'/ 'distract them from what we are doing' shit. If you feel so inclined KEEP IT OFF THIS LIST! If you think that bootlegging is morally wrong then I suggest you give me all your dats that were taped of bands who do not allow taping and stealth equipment. If you think that it is ok to stealth, but not bootleg then I guess we are dealing with an 'illegalitites' spectrum that is probably too far past your intellectual abilities to debate here (and again off topic). Fact is that bootleggers have always helped circulate music, and that is a FACT. So please - just keep it to yourself, this whole eBay topis is a joke too - "Hello FBI - I would like to report illegal Depeche Mode cds being sold on eBay", man, I thought that was a _joke_ and I now believe it was not, which just shows how stupid this list has become.... Can we get back to taping and trading now? Will hellllllll yeeeaaaahhhh! let the trading begin! :-) scott

Installation was very easy. But it isn't = >working! I am using a D7 with the Oades coaxial cable. The green light = >does not appear indicating that it is not recieving any digital audio. = >Is there something I should know? Any help is greatly appreciated. Aside from a driver problem or the possibility that you're not using Windows 98 (probably unlikely, since the green light's not on), it could be that the D7 doesn't send enough voltage to the DATport. The D7/D8's voltage is famously lower than what the standard is. This causes problems such as this (where the recieving equipment doesn't detect a signal at all), and with some equipment it sounds like dropouts (the sound is muted at parts). I assume Sony did this to cut battery drain, and they lowered the S/PDIF output voltage even further on the D100/M1. If that's the case, there's unfortunately no easy solution for it. The easiest (semi-readily-available) solution I can think of is to use two digital format converters, and that's kind of expensive--one to convert the coax to optical (assuming that converter accepts the D7's voltage), and another to convert the optical to coax. You could also unload this DATport (will the place that sold it to you take it back if it doesn't work as advertised?), wait for the DATport with optical I/O, and use a compatable digital format converter, or the Sony RMD3K or its replacement (what's that model number?) to get an optical output. That's kind of expensive as well. Core Sound (http://www.core-sound.com) sells digital format converters for about $70, and Len should be able to set you straight about D7 compatability. A less readily-available, but simpler solution would be to use an Audio Alchemy DTI, which was designed to reduce digital jitter. I got mine for less than $100 a couple of years ago at closeout (basically to overcome SCMS, which I don't use it for anymore), and I've used it to plug my D7 into my Philips DCC-900 DCC deck. My DCC-900 wouldn't accept the D7 voltage, but the DTI would, and it sent a standard-voltage coax signal to the DCC-900. If you can get one at a reasonable price ($100 or less, IMHO), this may be an ideal solution. Of course, there's the possibility that I'm all wrong about this, and someone posts that they've been able to plug a D7 directly into a DATport with great success. Peace, <> David
From: "David D. Rogers" <drogers@pobox.com> Subject: DAT Heads Flame list Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 23:36:45 -0800 Back when I was on GEnie, I occasionally used the Science Fiction and Fantasy RoundTable's bulletin board. I was impressed by one feature they created to cut the impact of flamewars--they created a separate bulletin board for them. The managers could move entire blocks of posts from one category and put them in another. This allowed people to continue their flamewars without censorship and with only a slight interrpution, and it kept their regular bulletin boards brimming with thoughtfull discussion. The more I see the bootlegging flamewars on this list, the more brilliant the SF&F RoundTable's formula looks. Of course, there's no way that Seth or anyone else can simply move flames to a place that only people who want to read them can see them, but there are still things that can be done. I hereby propose the creation of a DAT Heads flame list, in an attempt to keep as many flames off this list. If someone posts a flame that absolutely has to be responded to, the person can post to this list that they're responding on the flame list, and keep the conversation in there. If that doesn't happen, someone else can make helpfull suggestion to the flamers to move their discussion there. Most of the "debates" here are basically flamewars, which generally poisons the air. A lot of people want to respond to posts that they see as off-base, but many can't seem to do it without resorting to insults. (Yes, I know--I've posted my share of flames, too.) Even though we can't teach people manners or the finer points of debating, we can do a lot to at least move those posts off this list. Even non-flame responses to a flame would be appropriate for such a list, since they tend to accumulate almost as badly as flame responses. Anyone who wants to take part in the raging debate/flamewar can participate in a forum where everyone can read their points, and by someone (hopefully, only the poster making the first response) posting an anouncement that the discussion has moved to DAT Heads Flame, everyone knows they have an opportunity to read their comments. No one has to continue it on DAT Heads; everyone has the opportunity to read it, should they choose to do so. Those that choose not to do so can easily avoid reading the flames, and fewer digests are sent out that are full of flames. I propose this not to encourage flaming (I hope this would make people think twice before making or responding to a flame, and use more care when posting to DAT Heads in general), but as a safety valve. Comments or suggestions in regards to this post are welcome. Peace, <> David

As a follow up to Klay's cable post, could I use an audio switching box, such as the Niles TSB-3 tape deck switching box, to switch between SPDIF coaxial ins and outs on DATs, MDs, or CDRs? If not, what types of problems might I encounter? Are there devices specifically for switching coaxial digital signals (which hopefully also include SPDIF optical switching too)? Thanks, Rob

Actually it is the only Audio DAT to which I have access. I have transferred pieces from DAT to CD using that and my crude S&F 2006 on Windows95/P166. As far as I am aware this is still the only computer DAT drive with audio, and the programs are SGI only, although someone else on this mailing list was working on software for PC. ==John ffitch

From: Dave M <dm@cyberspace.org> Subject: Bootlegging Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 11:56:15 -0500 (EST) I agree 100% with those who say that there are a lot of hypocrites on this list. To the person who said that the "majority" of his list was comprised of tapes that were allowed to be recorded by the artist: what about that minority?? Who is calling the kettle black? You don't like bootlegs? Fine, don't buy them, don't trade them. Just don't tell me what to do. Oh and send all those illegally obtained dats my way when you are "purifying" your collection.
