From: PlayFrsbee@aol.com Subject: ISO: Oktava Microphone Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 17:32:08 EST HI, I'm considering my options concerning purchasing my first pair of microphones, and i saw some Oktava mics at my local Guitar Center store. They have two pairs of mics, a small diaphram cardiod condenser (for $149 each), and a large diaphram cardiod condenser ($199 each). The salesperson I talked to said that he tried out the small-diaphram condensers head to head in an x/y stereo recording with the small diaphram Neumann's (the little black ones) and the quality was nearly as good if not equal. Each mic has a -10 db pad and a 50hz high pass filter, and the frequency response on each is 20-20k. What should I do. I'd love to be able to get a pair of full size mics, but I don't know if I can afford a good stereo preamp and phantom power supply with them. Would these mics sound good (better then the SoundPros AT851's for example)? Which (inexpensive) preamp could I buy, keeping the package between $600-700 including mics and preamp? E-mail me with responses and post. Thanks, Ethan in Cranford, NJ
From: Alex <alexc@well.com> Subject: Long Beach Dub All-Stars 2/13/99 Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 14:58:24 -0800 Hi, I need a volunteer who A: likes Sublime tunes B: can burn CDs digitally on a PC I will send my master (MK4s>BRbox>SBM>D8) to you if you have time to put this to CD. The right channel developes some gnarly static about halfway through the show probably due to one of the 9volts in the pre-amp running out (sometimes I am too stupid to be worthy of running this gear) so the left channel will have to be spliced in on the clone. Ah well, live and learn. Send e-mail if you are up to this task.... -alex
From: Tim Johnston <johnston@engr.mun.ca> Subject: ISO Mic Stand Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 20:46:25 -0330 (NST) Hi, I am currently looking for a mic stand for taping. I'm interested in getting a stand that is relatively portable and can be extended around 10 or 15 feet. The stand will be used with a pair of Nak 300's to tape bands in mostly small clubs. I went searching through the archives but had limited success. One stand that did get mentioned a number of times was the Shure S14A stand. Can anyone comment on this stand or others? As well, where would I go looking for these mic stands? Will I be able to find them at a pro audio shop, or is there a reliable mail order service out there? Tim

From: Ibiza Bar <ibizabar@mindspring.com> Subject: ISO: moe. 4/14/96 atlanta Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 22:36:32 -0500 Hey fellow moe.rons out there! I am desparately looking for a moe. show from 4/14/96 at Smith's old bar in Atlanta. I've looked at the moe.links setlist homepage and it doesn't even have a setlist for this date. I know there were a few tapers there that night and more than likely would live around Atlanta. The big thing I remember about this show was during "Seat Of My Pants" when Rob and Al were moshing on stage during the heavy thrashing jam. Apparently Al knocked Rob off the stage by accident sending Rob, bass and all, plummeting to the floor. The dude landed right at my feet. (I think Rob was slightly drunk that night ;) He was okay and got back on stage and they all continued playing. Pretty wild sight though! Anyway, if anybody has this tape (DAT or analog, I don't care), I'll trade anything off my DAT list for it. In fact, I'll even trade the show from last night, 2/13/99 in Athens. Really killer show!! (Played Zappa's "San Ber'dino" for the encore :) Thanks for your time. Peace and music, Brian

From: Hugh Stevenson <hugh@ncal.verio.com> Subject: all that Jazz Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 03:10:15 -0800 (PST) I don't know of the taping policies of any of these groups, but Oregon should not be missed. The group has been together well over 20 years; the founding members were also original members of the Paul Winter Consort. Their music is more melodic than swinging. The rhythm is generally stated on tablas and carries that Eastern (further than Pittsburgh) feel. Looking backward through time, some might class them as nascent "world/world beat" music, but their musicianship, discipline, and group dynamic springs from their jazz backgrounds. Ralph Towner will show you a whole new world of possibilities for the acoustic guitar. iso Oregon, solo Ralph Towner, Paul Winter Consort performances (especially in California) - for that matter, any Egberto Gismonti, Jan Garbarek, others of that ilk?
