From: Jerry Zigmont <zigmont@mindspring.com> Subject: Tasty Colvin, Airplane Headphones & DAT (PCM) Transfer Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 18:25:29 -0500 Three requests my Dat friends, 1) Looking for a tasty Shawn Colvin trade, perhaps a pre-FM from the Autrey Museum? 2) Any recommendations on compact headphones which would block out the ambient noise on an airplane? Does such an animal exist? Cost? 3) Would anyone be able to do a quick transfer of some musical material which was digitally recorded on a VHS style tape. Not sure if this was medium was called PCM or not, but need it on a 90 meter conventional DAT. Would pass on a blank or two for the favor plus postage (of course). I would prefer sealed KAO's 90M tapes for both, but Sony's are fine too. No unlabelled tapes please. I'll send a note to the list when they're spoken for. Thanks! From: benjamin cho <bcho1@students.uiuc.edu> Subject: COP1 problem Reply-To: benjamin cho <bcho1@students.uiuc.edu> Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 21:13:17 -0600 (CST) Hi all, I had a problem tonight with my Fostex COP1 converter box. It has optical and coax I/O, Iusually tape SonyD8>Oade 7pinI/O>Coax cable>COP1 coax in> Optical out>Optical in on a FOstex D5 with no problems. Tonight I tried to run the opposite (optical out from fostx>COP1>Coax>oade in) , using the Fostex to play a 90M tape I was going to spin to 2 60's on the D8, but the Sony kept saying "no input". I know the Oade and coax cables are ok, the optical cable seems ok, so I'm thinking the coax in on the COP1 might be bad. Is there a way I can check this? The opposite way works fine. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks, Ben

Photoflex at www.photoflex.com has some very tall, extremely sturdy and air-shocked versions that I would recomend. The one designed for their extra large softbox is so sturdy that people will have a hard time accidently knocking them down. Evan From: Tim Johnston <johnston@engr.mun.ca> Subject: ISO Mic Stand Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 20:46:25 -0330 (NST) Hi, I am currently looking for a mic stand for taping. I'm interested in getting a stand that is relatively portable and can be extended around 10 or 15 feet. The stand will be used with a pair of Nak 300's to tape bands in mostly small clubs. I went searching through the archives but had limited success. One stand that did get mentioned a number of times was the Shure S14A stand. Can anyone comment on this stand or others? As well, where would I go looking for these mic stands? Will I be able to find them at a pro audio shop, or is there a reliable mail order service out there? Tim

Any suggestions on what kind of >soundcard I'll need to do this? Take a look at http://www.digitalexperience.com/cards.html -- it lists nearly all of the cards currently available (as far as I can tell), where you can find one for almost any project and budget. A few words of caution: avoid an ISA card if you can, since your next PC might not have an ISA slot. (PC makers are looking for ways to get rid of them. FWIW, I'm looking to upgrade my computer's CPU and motherboard very soon so I can still use my ZA2 card for a few more years.) A card that offers real-time resampling is a good thing to have; it's also an expensive thing to have. (It converts 48 kHz DATs to 44.1 for CD, which is a time-intensive thing to do with software.) The Opcode DATport USB interface device seems to be a great solution, though you need (specifically) Windows 98 and (obviously) a USB port--Mac drivers should becoming out later this year. And avoid the Sound Blaster Live, unless you're only using it as a game card--it resamples all inputs, so what you record to your hard drive is never what you put into it. Peace, <> David
