From: "Sean McNamara" <mcnamara@andrew.cmu.edu> Subject: ISO: Acoustic Junction trades, others Reply-To: <mcnamara@andrew.cmu.edu> Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 15:38:46 -0500 I have a crisp sbd of Acoustic Junction at the Rosebud Cafe, Pittsburgh from 1/16 this year. Excellent semi-acoustic show, but cut a little short by the venue's management due to lack of advanced sales (runs about 90 min). I guess here's another reason to buy tix in advance. Looking to trade for other AJ shows, especially from this past tour. Also always interested in SCI, Hornsby, dead, Keller Williams, etc. I would also like to add a few Phish shows to my collection (i only have 8/3/97) if someone could help me out. Thanks. Does such an animal exist? Cost? I use the Etymotic ER4S canal phones, they reduce the ambient noise by 20db. I use it along my Headroom Cosmic Headphone Amp. Check out www.headphone.com for more info. The canal phones are $300, the amplifiers range from $179-$1000+. When on the airplane, it eliminates engine noise, rowdy kids, crying babies, even the damn intercom... If you are using it with a sony portable, you'll probably need an amp to drive the eytmotics. D8 can drive them adequately, the M1/D100 does not get loud enough for my tastes.

Yes (sorta), no, and no. :) CD burners can write any data file, including a ... do DVD players have digital out (i guess sorta like CD players, some they do, some they don't)? but the real question is if DVD does have digital out then how would you record the 96k onto a DDS1-based DAT? is there some way to throttle it down to 44 or 48? (aside: quite amazing that the audio industry never picked up on DDS2 specs - looks like they never will - even with DDS3 on the streets now and DDS4 even looming close - DAT audio seems locked into DDS1 forever) fish -- "it's so easy to slip, it's so easy to fall, and let your memory drift and do nothing at all..." -lowell george John R. From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Has anyone ever stuck a sound level meter on stage? Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 14:13:45 -0800 A recent comment on mixing X/Y cardioid mics from the front center of the stage (pointing "into the band")with a pair of spread omnis towards the sides of the stage got my attention. I've been running spread omnis on stage for a while now with pretty good results but I think I could get better - perhaps by doing the above(and placing the X/Y (or "ORTFish") cardioids close to the vocal monitors to pick up extra vocals, etc). Since I already own the Oktava MC012 set which has cardioid, omni, hypercardioid capsules, and screw in -10dB pad, all I would need to buy is another pair of mic bodies to do the above(have mixer). I'm wondering if I should buy another set of -10dB screw in pads in addition. With the spread omnis on stage, I've run those with and without the pads and have never actually heard any distortion, even without using the pads. The oktavas without the pads are capable of handling 138dB SPL (so with pads, capable of 148dB SPL). It would be helpful to know what the actual SPL's are on stage. Of course it varies by the band, etc but lets just say "a local jam band playing clubs of about 300 people or so(perhaps like a moe. type gig 3 years ago or something like that). While I doubt 138dB SPL is reached too often, I don't know for sure. So does anyone have an idea of what the SPLs are on stage for a situation like this? Of course it depends highly on position but "in general" - the mics are never shoved directly in front of a guitar amp, drums, bass amp etc. For that matter I'm curious what the SPL's are in other situations too(like a phish tapers section, etc), so if you've ever measured either could you comment? Thanks, Pete
From: dan clark <clarkda@one.net> Subject: Black Crowes tapers... Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 17:17:14 -0500 (EST) Al right, I'm desperate -- any BC tapers/fans out there that are going to Columbus or Cincinnati that have better seats than me? My tix for Columbus are close but off to the right. For Cincinnati, they're in the balcony. Ugh! My question is this: Does anyone want to run a super-nice rig from their seat in order to make a KICKASS tape of the Crowes? From the reports I've heard so far, there hasn't been much hassle getting your gear in. Please e-mail me if you can help, want to know particulars on the rig, etc. Thanks! --Dan P.S. I am sorry to have expended such limited resources by even thinking of posting about a bootlegger in our company. To those who don't like it, I have an idea. Surely you're interested in spreading some of your masters around...you're not a hoarder, are you? Well, have I got an answer for you! Just give ol' buddy a call and he'll start pressing some of your hard work on to CD!

FWIW, I'd love to hear how the D7/D8 and D100/M1 work with the DATport without something like the Oades Active Cable (like the Oade DIGI I/O-P, Core Sound cables or the Sony cables that don't adjust the output voltage). My guess is that if it accepts the D100/M1's "native" voltage, it will accept the D7/D8's, too. Peace,

From: "Daniel Kantor" <dkantor@umich.edu> Subject: sample rate Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 18:56:27 -0500 I have been converting my files from 48 to 44.1 using Cool Edit 96. I cannot hear any difference between the before and after. I just realized that there is an option on what quality you should convert it at. It has been set to 150. Should I change this? Also do most people amplify the sound a little before burning it to CD? I tried amplifying it 3db higher and it sounded good. Is this bad to do? thanks, Dan

From: Dan Clark <clarkda@NKU.EDU> Subject: X/Y question Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 21:17:48 -0500 When running X/Y, is there supposed to be a tiny gap or should one cap actually "lay" on the other? I've heard that phase shift during X/Y occurs where there is any distance but I've seen illustrations in books and literature that looks as if there is a tiny distance (1/8"-1/16"). I've done both and not been able tell a difference. Just curious as to the technically correct answer Thanks, Dan
From: Seth Breidbart <sethb@panix.com> Subject: Re: X/Y question Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 21:28:09 -0500 (EST) > When running X/Y, is there supposed to be a tiny gap or should one cap > actually "lay" on the other? I've heard that phase shift during X/Y occurs > where there is any distance but I've seen illustrations in books and > literature that looks as if there is a tiny distance (1/8"-1/16"). Ideally, the capsules should be colocated. Physics says that's impossible (two objects can't occupy the same space at the same time), but they should be as close as possible. Touching is bad, because the mics will make noise as they bang and rub against each other. The phase shift from 1/8" up (when the music is coming from a horizontal plane) is negligible. Seth
From: "Charles D. Boozer" <cboozer@bigfoot.com> Subject: Dallas tapers alert! From: Eugene Hu <eugene@superpeter.west.enterworks.com> Subject: digital cables Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 19:01:55 -0800 (PST) >What I meant here is that for short (i.e., 3') runs, a Radio Shack $5 video >cable sounds pretty much the same as a $50 Monster (or similar) "digital" >cable. I've always had a problem with both video cables (Radio Shack and otherwise) as well as Monster 75 ohm digital cables; their RCA connectors are so tight on my decks (Panasonic SV-3700 and Sony PCM-2700A) that it doesn't seem possible to plug them in without damaging something, not that I've tried pushing hard enough to get them to seat since the back panel is seriously warped long before that. Only the digital cables that came with my SV-3700 and the Canare 75 ohm RCA connectors seem to push on with a reasonable force. These days I exclusively use the Canare connectors (with the appropriate Canare cable, I forget the number) since they grip well without requiring excessive force, are very well made, and are the only setup that hasn't caused an occasional loss of digital sync when recording on my CDR-620. Only problem is that you need a special crimping tool. Anyone else have a problem with connectors that are too tight, or do I just have a pair of mutant machines? -Eugene
From: Jerichoholic <eric@ptdprolog.net> Subject: Taping Laws in PA Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 22:03:53 -0500 Hi, it's been a while since I taped a concert, but I've had my D8 for 4 years and barely used it. I have almost front row seats to Black Sabbath on Feb 18 in Philadelphia so I figured I'd record it. I've recorded several times at the Spectrum before with much luck. But since it's been a while I'm a little weary about getting caught (sorry I'm very paranoid) and I'd like to know the exact laws (did they get any stricter?), in case for some reason I do get snagged. What I'm really worried about is losing my equipment. Is it true in some states you can? If for some reason I was snagged and they tried take my equipment what would I say? I would offer to leave and give them my tape but what if they are pricks and think they could take my equipment? Is there any laws protecting my equipment? If they did try to take it, what would be the intelligent thing to say (referring the law)? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, -Eric

From: "Brian Kelley" <isgraphix@hotmail.com> Subject: ISO: advice on DAT decks (cheap ones!) Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 20:12:57 PST I was looking into spending some money on a DAT deck, but I don't want to get TOO far up in price range. I was looking at either a Sony R-300 or a Tascam DA-20 mkII. They are both great decks I hear for under $700. Now I know both these decks only have RCA and coaxial i/o. It's only when you get up into the $1000 range, like with the R-500 or SV-3800 I guess, that you get XLRs. The way I see it, I'm only going to be using a home deck for its "true intent" purpose -- for home. I wouldn't be lugging that deck around everywhere to patch into a soundboard at any given show (since it would be easier to have XLR i/o. I have a Sony M-1 portable already, so I'm fine in the live taping department. I just want something that is cheap, but not in quality and can make crispy sounding tapes with good error correction. Basically I would like some input or opinions on the R-300 or DA-20 mk II. Sure I would be losing other great capabilities like auto head-cleaning and super bitmapping, but I am so desparate to get a DAT home deck, it's driving me nuts!!!!! So any opinions on the aforementioned decks would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.
