From: "Dave Egan" <degan@seanet.com> Subject: Tape offer: Zony Mash Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 20:36:06 -0800 I have an extra Zony Mash show from 8Feb99 on 90m DAT that I taped myself. MMW fans, you should check out this band! This is a hot, hot show - and the sound quality will knock your socks off! It's an audience tape in a small club - it's as clear as a SB, but it has that "air" that SB tapes lack. First response, either trade or B+P gets it. For those who care, this tape has been resampled using a SBLive. The bits are different than the master, but you'll never hear a better aud tape - ever. - Dave

From: Eric Angel <ejangel@ucdavis.edu> Subject: Fugazi / Phantom Power Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 21:15:02 -0800 Sorry about the lack of DAT content, but I promised a good friend I'd tape Fugazi at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento CA on 2/24, and the show is sold-out. Does anyone have an extra? I know it's a long shot, but I have to at least try. Now something more DAT related: When the specs on mics(like AT853) say they need 9-52V of Phantom power, what is optimal? 9V, 52V, or somewhere inbetween? If more power is better, has anyone personally built a power supply with 1 or 2 9V batteries and basic op-amps like the LM741(I think that's the #)? Are basic op-amps suitable for use in power supplies, or are they too noisy? Anyone have any schematics for power supplies? I have some ideas of my own, but I'd like to see what other manufacturers/people do. From: Mark McHarg <MGM@symbionics.co.uk> Subject: RE: sample rate Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 11:32:05 -0000 > I have been converting my files from 48 to 44.1 using Cool Edit 96. > I just realized that there is an option on what quality you should > convert it at. It has been set to 150. Should I change this? It's a trade-off. Most people you will trade with would prefer for you to use maximum quality, but it will take longer to convert. > Also do most people amplify the sound a little before burning it to CD? Some people "normalise" everything, which is when the editor boosts the volume so as to make the loudest peak exactly full-scale. If the peaks are above -6dB (sample values 16384 to 32767) that's good enough for me and I don't amplify. (Most sound editors have a statistics function which will tell you how loud the peaks are.) If the music is lower than that you might want to boost it, purely for convenience when listening. The signal-to-noise ratio of the recording will stay the same because you are amplifying the existing quantisation noise as well as the music (signal). If you amplify by a number which is not an integer, you will also add a tiny amount more quantisation noise. This is usually not significant. Another reason to tweak levels is if you are making a compilation disk from multiple sources in which case you will want to match the loudness of the different sources. BEWARE: simply normalising multiple sources will not result in the same loudness. If you boost acoustic music to have the same peak levels as electric music, it will sound much louder because the "peak-to-mean" ratio is lower.

The Fostex D5 is a great bargain right now. I have one of thses and a Sony M-1 portable and I am very happy with both. Even though the D5 has XLR audio, it is switchable to normal domestic line levels. I copy between the two by using the Sony optical cable. Andrew.

From: Josh <opermgr@cigarsavor.com> Subject: buying advice for new dat head? Reply-To: Josh <opermgr@cigarsavor.com> Date: 17 Feb 99 10:39:22 -0500 I am just about to start out on the digital taping road, and am looking for some good advice. I want to find a good starter portable deck for live taping. Obvious concerns are reliability, price (i am going back to school this fall, and cant go crazy on expenditures), compatibility for a chain (again, money factors mean i wont be buying mics quite yet), and scms capabilities. I deem it my responsibility to make sure my friends can listen to good live music, and tinny, noisy cassettes just arent hacking it anymore.. Any reccomendations? I have a D-7 in my sights, at about $400... good deal, bad deal? help! Oh, any boston area tapers out there who can get to the lizard lounge on friday night, there is a great band playing called bobby lee rodgers and the herd, if you get in touch with me, and can tape the show, I can get you on the guest list... From: daniel.estrin@chadbourne.com Subject: x/y mic placement Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 12:04:15 -0500 Howdy all - Seth already responded, but i thought i'd pass along this link to a great mic FAQ (no, not THE mic FAQ that's been around since, what, 1962?). The Oades have put together a very nice new mic FAQ section with helpful graphics, diagrams, etc. re: mic placement and the different placement techniques. Check out: http://www.oade.com/tapers/faq-mic.html If you follow link No. 13, you will find the graphics and digrams to which I am refering. No affiliation blah blah blah. Just impressed with what they've done with their webpage. As for the poster's original question, here's an excerpt from what the oade's have to say on the subject: >>>This is the most common form of stereo recording, the 90 degree X-Y configuration. Here careful attention should be paid to the vertical alignment of the diaphram inside the capsule. The smaller the error the better the focus and depth of the recording. The horizontal displacement is not critical and can be adjusted to accomadate larger microphones or the use of windscreens.<<<<< Shalom, Daniel Estrin Dan Clark asked: >>>>When running X/Y, is there supposed to be a tiny gap or should one cap actually "lay" on the other? I've heard that phase shift during X/Y occurs where there is any distance but I've seen illustrations in books and literature that looks as if there is a tiny distance (1/8"-1/16"). I've done both and not been able tell a difference. Just curious as to the technically correct answer<<<
