Hello,
In search of anyone who may have taped Gibb Droll, and more importantly
the opening band Rockwell Church - 2.6.99 @ the Iron Horse, Northampton,
MA. Spoke to the guys from Rockwell Church, and they said they saw
someone taping... if you're out there, please contact me...
Also, I did a bit o' experimenting last night while taping Rockwell
Church. The last few times I taped them using my sony D8 from their
sbd/mackie mixer, I hit some major and minor digital distortion. I
brought my tascam da20mkII and plugged into to their "sbd" and no
flaws/distortion, hence a great tape. My question- rather than lugging
my tascam around, would a sony sbm-1 be the answer? or are there any
other options/modifications (something to do w/ the preamp?)if so,
anyone selling a used sbm-1? And since I couldn't monitor the tascam b/c
it was behind the guys, when I listened to it, I noticed there are a few
program tracks on it. Is that something I should be worried about or
concerned, regardless, the sound came out great.
If anyone would be interested, I'd B&P or trade for this show,

A better solution (IMO) would be the Sony PCM-M1 (pro) and Sony D100
(consumer). Their prices aren't far apart; the main differences are that
the M1 doesn't adhere to SCMS copying restrictions (very good), and the
D100 comes with a wired remote control (it doesn't control recording,
AFAIK). The M1 costs slightly more than the D100. I think the D8 has been
discontinued for a while, and its input is rather noisy. But if you can
find one (not hard), it will be cheaper than either the M1 or D100.
Then there's the Tascam DA-P1, which is a portable but not nearly "Walkman"
size--it seems everyone agrees it's a superior deck, aside from its size.

This is very doable. In fact, if you can't afford a second DAT, it's a
great way to copy DATs. And a great first step into CD recording.

hello,
i'm selling my Sony D10 Pro I-
original owner James Young of Eco-charge. At James' request, Bob Katz
of Digital Domain modified the analog front end and A/D converter and
optimized the machine to work with James' AMS st250 microphone/AMS
phantom power. Bob boosted the analog gain stage 20db. Also, the 1/2
hz digital filter has been eliminated.
It was last cleaned and calibrated by Pro Digital in the summer of
'96. With the exception of a few masters, 8 to be exact, this machine
has sat on the shelf for the past 4 years and that is why i'm parting
with it; i figure someone can put this killer front end to better use
than me.
features:
-original box and manuals
-AES/EBU i/o cable
-Spdif i/o cable
-Eco charge battery system including 2 batteries and fast charger.
-custom Kangaroo soft case and fanny pack featuring clear flaps and
access to all controls as well as space for the external
batteries-compares to Portabrace at $175.
For a little more than a DAP1 and a grand less than the HHB you get
the added security of a dual door tape loading system for dust and
debris protection, both aes and spdif in/out, external batteries, a
well designed case and the R&D of Bob Katz. this machine mates well
with external gear such as mic pre's and a/d converters.
Price is 1450.00 delivered. please respond via email. thanks in advance.
peace and out,
john longmire

Thank you for posting this article directly to dat-heads. I found
many aspects of the article very interesting, and well worth the
space.
Some people prefer to post just the URL to an article. Though this
may have a higher "legality," very often, by the time you click on
the URL the article may already be gone.
Also important (for archivists like ourselves), posting the entire text
to DAT-Heads places the article in the "dat heads permanent
record" (sort of like the Congressional Record, but without all that
impeachment crap).
SO please -- I hope most of us will agree -- bandwidth is cheap,
and most all information is worth having.
P.s. interesting that retailers make a *major* markup on boot CD's -
about $15 vs. $1-4 for regular CD's - so this is probably why
retailers sell them! - not - "to benefit the community" !!

Hi Dan,
Bear in mind that, in general, sound travels at about 1 ft per millisecond.
With this in mind, microphones that are separated by one foot are only one
millisecond out of phase if they are in relation to a common sound source.
While x/y is applied for phase coherency, it will often lead to recordings
with a narrow stereo image (ie. the sound seems to come from between the two
loudspeakers.
However, a slight phase shift, like that caused by near-coincident pickup
patterns (ORTF being one), actually results in a wider stereo image--the
sound seems to come from both speakers and the space in between. In an
interesting paper, shared by Wes Dooley at an AES convention a few years
back, he discussed how it is this phase shift that actually gives the
listener the feeling of stereo separation. Taken to the extreme, spacing
microphones too far apart can lead to a sense of a whole in between the
speakers.
Happy Taping.

The means that at 1 kHz, the signal is a full cycle out of phase; at
500 Hz, it's half a cycle.
(Exactly what causes the perception of stereo image is still not
understood. For many purposes, ORTF or some variant thereof is better
than XY.)
