From: Jeff Bowen <jbowen@slonet.org> Subject: differences between Sonosax and Beyer? Reply-To: Jeff Bowen <jbowen@slonet.org> Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 11:46:03 -0800 (PST) Greetings all.Maybe someone can answer a question for me. I'm still researching mic preamps to go with a set of Neumann KM-140's. Marc Nutter has been telling me that the Beyer and the Sonosax have 'virtually' the same internal electronics except for differences in the gain switching and outputs. He says the sound of the two units is the same. Is this really true? If it Is I can't see spending twice as much for the Sonosax without getting an increase in sound quality. Anyone use both of them side by side? Any conclusions?? btw, Marc was pushing the Lunatec over the other two preamps... Thanks for the bandwidth. Jeff
From: "Frank Goodrick" <video.image@ibm.net> Subject: RE:Sony DAT DTC-ZA5ES Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 15:04:50 -0500 David, I have 2 of them; but I use them for playback only; using them to record intros SCMS. Otherwise, they seem fine. They do get hot, which causes diginoise after awhile, esp. on a 90m, but just aim a small fan at the back of the unit to take care of that. Frank. From: "David A. Wanamaker" <wanamaker@home.com> Subject: Sony DAT DTC-ZA5ES Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 19:10:00 -0500 Anyone have any opinions on the subject item? I have chance to get a good bargain on it, but I haven't heard much about the unit. Is it a good DAT player for cloning from a D8/M1?? Thanks for your input, David
From: "Paul Jones" <pauljones94@hotmail.com> Subject: Phish Newbie/Unidecker Offer Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 12:41:24 PST The Oade's are gonna wince, but... I have recently decided to make the move to 90s and as a result I have transferred a bunch of stuff from 60s to 90s. What I have then right now is 30 60m tapes divided up into 3 blocks of 10 each to offer up to 1,2,or even 3 people. All of these tapes are on labeled Maxell HS-4 60m. What I am looking for is this...The best available deal right now on the HS-4s is from American digital <www.american-digital.com> with 60s being $3.69 and 90s being $3.79. For each block of my 10 60s I would like 10 brand new Maxell HS-4 90m tapes and I will make up the $1 difference to you. What I'd like you to do is have you call and have the blanks sent directly to me and then I will send these tapes out to you as soon as I get the blanks. When emailing me please let me know which block of tapes you are interested in. Preference goes to anyone wanting more than one block, otherwise it is first come first served. Many of these tapes are on sources that are not super-circulated, so try to pass them around a little... From: magnew@together.net (Matt Agnew) Subject: Geez, I hate to suggest this, but... Reply-To: magnew@together.net Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 00:07:15 GMT While I'm all for the open forum thing, this spam is getting out of hand. It's clearly evident that the Dat-Heads e-mail is circulating widely amongst the spammer circle. Short of changing the address for submissions, there's not much we can do here - it's gonna keep coming. Is there a way we can set this list up to accept mail only from registered users? I'm not suggesting setting any kind of membership requirements, just that one register with a valid address and list all addresses they may post from. The listserver would bounce all others. No spammer is going to jump through these hoops, and once each of us does the registration, the process becomes invisible - no outside intervention would be necessary. What I know about servers and lists wouldn't fill an 1/8" jack - is this feasible? Would it put too much of a load on the server? Is anyone against this on principle? Of course, during the registration process we will make it clear that one is to turn off HTML when posting :) discuss... Tim, I use the ZA2 and have been extremely happy with it. I have done quite a bit of resampling on the fly, and its worked very well, if there are problems with its capability in that area, I have yet to hear even the slightest hint of it. Also, don't worry about the lack of analog inputs, when I run an analog tape to my hard disk for CDR burning, I don't bother recording a DAT copy first, I simply put a blank tape in my Tascam DA20, put it in pause record mode, connect my analog tape deck to the Tascam's RCA inputs, and use it as a pass-through. The DA20 goes into pause record mode (i.e. the heads are disengaged, but the deck is still passing audio), but if your deck doesn't do this, you can still record a DAT simultaneous as you record to hard disk, but just do it all in ONE step. I paid $1200 for it when I first started getting into taping. The only good thing about it is the 5-year warranty. And I don't know if it's transferable. Well, the A/D is pretty good, as Norbert said, but that's about it. According to what I've heard, it has the same transport as the 2600. I've had to have mine repaired twice already for the transport motors. If you want a solid deck, get a Tascam DA-20mkII. Half the price (give or take), likes 90m tapes much better, NICE transport, easy to get-at error counters, stop and skip ids, and it's not a sony. You can also disable scms. Cons? No optical inputs. From: "Michael Beck" <mbeck69@hotmail.com> Subject: DVD-Audio, JMP + Fishman, List noise, Phish, etc. Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 19:24:41 PST Brief post, couple of things. First of all, I believe the DVD-Audio spec *has* been ratified, and just in the last week or so. Unfortunately, it seems that we'll still be limited to 74 minutes per disc (though I may be reading it wrong). Multi-channel audio is cool, though only six channels are supported at 96kHz/24bit. The coolest is 2-channel audio at 192kHz/24bit. :) Looks like we'll be hearing some amazing music in a few years! For more info, check out: http://www.harmony-central.com/Newp/1999/DVD-Audio-10.html Next topic: is there any possibility of someone running a tree of the Jazz Mandolin Project + Fishman shows (tour de flux) from last month? I was at the the Irving Plaza show and it was incredible! It was nice to see a bunch of good JMP stuff interpreted by Fishman. Cool! (Alternatively, if a tree doesn't happen, would someone be willing to do B+P for this show from a poor unidecker? Please?) Moving right along: I think a lot of the problems people are having on this list come from the S/N ratio. Namely, the extraneous HTML, the unneeded large quotes, but also the multiple questions which are constantly asked (like should I get a D7 or a D8?). And I agree with whoever said that we should try to focus more on DATs and less on CDs; this isn't a Windows help group. That said, if a question hasn't been asked before it probably can't hurt to ask it here - all we have to do is page down past it if we're not interested. But for the love of god, please try to search the archives before asking 5000 (?) people what the best home deck is! I think that's the answer, really - if we all try to keep in mind that our every word will be read by 5000 other people, maybe we'll be more economical. :) And lastly, just because I happen to be posting: those interested in Phish might want to check out http://www.phish.net/news.shtml. It seems our favourite band might be playing a festival in mid-July, not the end of August. They applied for (and received) a permit for a possible show in Johnstown, New York. Nothing's been announced yet, and they're looking at two other venues, but something's definitely in the works. And for July, too! Sigh. I hope summer tour isn't as short as I'm suspecting it will be...Take care everybody! - Mike ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
From: NaiuTaper@aol.com Subject: No DAT Content: Microphone Bar ?? Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 22:29:06 EST All this talk of different setups for microphone placement got me to thinking that i needed to go out and test all these ideals in the field as to become more adept in my recording skills. So I have one question, what would be the best adjustable stereo microphone holders for a stand that would allow me to try as many different techniques as possible from ORTF to XY ,even as extreme ( in my humble opinion as Blumlein crossed 8s. For without experimenting how is one truly to understand what is written. Have seen and looking at Shure A 27M, but would like to know about more options. ohh BTW I use small Cpasule microphones the Nuemann km184's. Peace Stephen
