FOR SALE: Sony PCM-M1
This unit is brand new, in its original box, unopened. The reason I am
selling this is because I had my original M1 in the shop at Sony and they
deemed it as "unfixable" or "not worth fixing". They have a fixed rate set
for certain units that can't be fixed in exchange for a new unit.
Therefore, I have paid the fixed rate and have a brand new PCM-M1 in its
place.
I'm asking only $650 (incl. shipping) obo. The unit of course includes
everything: the unit in leather casing, batteries, charger, AC adapter,
etc. I will even throw in 2 DAT clones of your choice from my DAT list.
During the time my original was in the shop, I had gone ahead and purchased
another M1 -- this was over 3 months ago. I have already lost money by
paying the fixed rate, so I'm not profiting from this at all! I just want
to make up for some of the loss though.
So please, if anybody is interested drop me a line. Serious inquires only!!!
Thanks.
Peace and music,
Brian

This does not technically answer your question but seems to apply.
I have a Shure VP88 stereo mic and most everyone strongly recommends
that I use 2 identical preamps to provide the phantom power and to
boost the line output (the vp88 has a Y output cable, therefore 2
outputs. I just wanted to mention that I currently use two different
preamps (because that's all I have) and yes, if listen to one channel,
then the other there is a noticable difference in the sound
reproduction. But, when played together the difference is not
detrimental. Perhaps the stereo image is even enhanced somewhat
because the differences seem to bring out the best of the left and
right movement in sound. This suprised me because I like the sound
of one preamp better than the other but when heard together in stereo,
I have enjoyed it enough to delay purchasing a twin for the better
pre.
My preamps are dbx 386a and event emp1. The dbx has processing while
the event does not. I turn off those when used together. The event
emp1 is much better preamp to my ear although it seems to color the
sound very slightly. Someday I'll get a twin for the emp1 or buy a 2
channel preamp.
I hope this helps. I have a feeling you would run into the same kind
of issues when using 2 different mics.

I was just wondering how much influence using two different brands of
microphones would have upon a stereo recording, especially if they
were of similar quality. Would AKGs mix with Neumanns or B&K. I know
about waveform matching, but I still wonder.

Having bought my first-ever DAT machine yesterday (a Casio DA-7) I'm
still getting to grips with it. One thing I really need is an instruction
manual, which unfortunately the seller no longer had. Is there any chance
of finding an online version?
In particular, the questions I have are:
how long should I expect the NiCad battery to last?
can the machine indicate the charge?
can the display indicate error rates?
are there any "hidden" features which can be accessed using non-obvious
combinations of button-presses?
If these questions are answered elsewhere I'd be grateful for pointers in
the right direction.
Thanks for any assistance,
Daniele

Nearly all of the CD-R related stuff on this list _is_ related to DAT in
some way. CD-R is just a better preservation medium than DAT. It's a
natural extension of DAT, and a great way to extend the music to others in
a lossless (assuming the original's 44.1) format. Of course, we're all
still going to use DAT for the time being because it's better for recording.

Chris Duarte Group will be appearing in Eureka Springs, Arkansas
Saturday March 13th. They'll be playing two full sets, including a
rare ACOUSTIC set. I've only known Chris to play acoustic three
other times. One was a private party, and the other two were not
announced ahead of time. I've already talked to several tapers who
will be coming in to audio and video tape the show. I've called
the promoter, and he's well aware that Chris allows taping... no
problems on his end with audio/video/soundboard access. The
show is in the ballroom of the 115 year old Crescent Hotel at the top
of Eureka Springs. Eureka is a resort community in the Northwest
corner of Arkansas famous for its blues and folk festivals.

Howdy Doobie everyone!
Let's see if I've got this straight....I can use the DATPort
to move my DATS to my computer...then I have to resample(convert) the
signal to 44.1 (I record in 32, out of necessity). At this point
software will come in to play..(for the resampling?)..the Datport
doesn't resample like digital sndcards?..right?..and if software is the
case..what is a good pgm?...(soundforge?)

I would hope not: overshoot is inevitable when low pass filtering, and
a DAC with zero headroom is broken. Gibbs phenomenon cannot be
avoided, so oversampling converters must be capable of dealing with
signals outside the range. Okay, the example in the URL is more
extreme than anything you're likely to encounter in practice, but some
overshoot will always occur after a signal has been normalized.
Analogue reconstruction filters will have little trouble with this, of
course, as long as they have sufficient headrom.
Andrew.

Soory for the cross post digi phishers.
I have recently undertaken a little project to help develop a local
trading network between OK. & TX. The RED RIVER TRADER ALLIANCE. I am
hoping to be able to spread local music and spread tapes of the larger
acts that grace us when they do come. I have analoger's on but need dat
heads to help seed quality shows from the area. I myself am a unidecker
so I will get to take part in all that D>A fun stuff. This site just
simply links an exisiting URL so you really don't have to do anything but
e-mail me.
My URL is below and there is a link to the page from mine.
I don't have a counter on the RED RIVER TRADER ALLIANCE page so I am
sending people through my site to get an idea of how many people are
checking this out.
If you do not wish to go through my site just add /redriver.html and you
will be there.
Thanks again for the BW....I would offer something up for the space but
as i said I am only a UNI.
Peace...Chris Wright

this was a great show and the tapes came out great.....we were setup
dead center and there is little or no crowd noise.

<< Next topic: is there any possibility of someone running a tree of
the Jazz Mandolin Project + Fishman shows (tour de flux) from last
month? I was at the the Irving Plaza show and it was incredible! It
was nice to see a bunch of good JMP stuff interpreted by Fishman.
Cool! (Alternatively, if a tree doesn't happen, would someone be
willing to do B+P for this show from a poor unidecker? Please?)
Moving right along: I think a lot of the problems people are having
on this list come from the S/N ratio. Namely, the extraneous HTML, the
unneeded large quotes, but also the multiple questions which are
constantly asked (like should I get a D7 or a D8?). And I agree with
whoever said that we should try to focus more on DATs and less on CDs;
this isn't a Windows help group. That said, if a question hasn't been
asked before it probably can't hurt to ask it here - all we have to do
is page down past it if we're not interested. But for the love of god,
please try to search the archives before asking 5000 (?) people what
the best home deck is! I think that's the answer, really - if we all
try to keep in mind that our every word will be read by 5000 other
people, maybe we'll be more economical. :)>>
