I think that what we found was that the digital audio extraction from DDS hardware was not possible except in machines where the software drivers supported that feature. A brand was mentioned (SGI?). Most manufacturers don't support audio on their DDS hardware, that's the problem. Gordon Gidluck

From: "Brian Krahmer" <brian@krahmer.com> Subject: Re: DAT to CDR effeiciently? Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 18:49:08 -0700 Richard, If your CD recording program uses cue sheets or the like (I use Goldenhawk's CDRWin), you do not need to break the show into files for each song. Unfortunately, you are on a Mac {not unfortunate, really :) }, so I can't give you exact instructions on a better method. Here's what I do: record the music off of DAT with Cooledit using my Zefiro ZA-2. For a 2-3 hour show, I use two files, it makes it much easier to manage. I edit the music as necessary to 74 minute or less chunks. As I'm editing, I add cue points. When I'm done editing the files and have them saved, I whip out a cool little java program that I wrote that looks at the cue points and generates a cue sheet for me. I go into CDRWin, open the cue sheet, and burn away. The process is quite simple, really, depending on how much work the music needs. If anyone wants to get ahold of my java cuesheet editor, take a look at my website: http://www.krahmer.com/cuebuilder.html The installation instructions are kind of gross, but if you run into problems, drop me a line. brian -- Brian Krahmer - brian@krahmer.com - http://www.krahmer.com Expert 3.0 - Intelligent Network Security - http://www.L-3Security.com
From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Re: DAT to CDR effeiciently? Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 18:41:39 -0800 I hate to reply *after* you've bought a digital soundcard, but the way to transfer DAT to CDR efficiently... is with a stand-alone audio CD recorder. You simply play the dat, push "record" on the CD recorder, walk away, and in an hour & 15 minutes, you have your first copy of the CD. (Disclaimer: this does not count the time to put "start_ID's" on the dat, to mark the tracks, before recording the CD. This, of course, is optional. Some people do it "while" the CD is being recorded, and some people don't do it at all. I've found the fastest way to add start_ID's (especially on concerts with long, jam-like tracks), if you "master" or otherwise play/copy the dat before you make the CD, is to jot down the approx. A- Times for each ID while the tape is recording. Then you can very quickly wind back to the spots and add ID's. This is much faster than scanning the whole tape, unless you have a deck with 10X scan. I did an entire show with 14 ID's in under 1/2 hour using this method). Once you've made the first CD, you can copy it in realtime with the stand-alone (at least if you buy a pro unit), or you can load it into the computer for "high-speed" copies, adding or fine-tuning ID's, or completely remastering the recording. ========== Here is the fastest way I know to add track ID's with a computer. Read the whole disc (dat) into the computer as one large file, with Goldenhawk CDRWIN. Look at the file with CoolEdit. In another window, have a text editor open. Find the exact times you want the track breaks to occur with Cool Edit. If the cursor is on that point, you can read the exact time in the lower right-hand corner. (Set Cool Edit to display time in 75ths/ of second units). Copy this time "mentally" into the cue sheet. (Switch from one window to another with alt-tab, in windows). I believe the latest version of CDRWIN has a built-in editor which makes it easier to write cue sheets, though I haven't tried it yet. There is no need to break up the big file into smaller files. ========================== Obligatory disclaimer and dat store content. Yes, I sell stand-alone CD recorders! From: Aaron Westendorf <westea@rpi.edu> Subject: ISO:Thoughts on AT mics Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 22:57:45 -0500 I'm in the very preliminary stages of designing my own taping rig, and I was cruising around on a few sites and found several of the AT mics to be right in my price range. The models that seem most interesting are the 4041, 4051 and 4053. First off, for a beginners system, is the ability to change capsules that big of a deal? The majority of my taping will be in clubs and some arenas, so I'm thinking that going with the cardoid only (a huge cost savings, which is important) 4041's wouldn't be a big deal. Also, what experience have people had using these mics for live (rock) music recording? They're all 20hk-20khz, and show a pretty flat frequency response. My only experience with AT mics have been with the 82x models, and they all seem to have a tendency to overdo the high frequencies and be slightly harsh at times. For the preamp, I'll probably go with the Beyer MV-100, simply for cost considerations. If anyone else can recommend a better pre-amp in the same price range, I'd like to know of one. For the time being I'll probably just use my D8 for the ADC, I may be able to afford an SBM-1 at some point, but I'll probably have to wait awhile before that happens. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I save money much better if I have a goal to save for, so I'm trying to get an idea of how much my system will cost. Also, how much will it cost me to get shock mounts, a stand, and all the other accessories? Thanks, Aaron -- ==================================================== Aaron J. From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Who is Nels Cline?? Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 20:31:11 -0800 Since I've noticed that the band I didn't even name has gotten five requests, and five shows with Nels Cline got none :-) , I thought I better say a word or two about Nels Cline. Nels Cline is a guitarist with an amazing range from loud shreaking noise to the most delicate beautiful classical guitar. And he often combines this entire range into one song. He plays with well over a dozen bands as well as thrown-together combinations, playing everything from jazz to rock-jazz-jam music to his own versions of punk. (a small joke: what do you get when you combine jazz and punk. Junk. What do you get when you combine punk and jazz? P'zazz. anyway, that is what Nels plays). A little description of some of his bands: Nels Cline Trio -- with a bass player and drummer as good as Nels, this sadly broken-up band was Nels in purest form. The 1995 CD (below) was something of a "debut" of the new album Ground. Most of the songs are really, really loud. (no vocals) Banyan -- Jazz for a post-rock work. Improvisational songs around pre-defined structures. Great flow from one song to another. Steve Perkin's band; Nels & Mike Watt are frequent members, as well as Willie & Dave on horns. (no vocals) Geraldine Fibbers -- post-punk cowgirl band, often called "the best new band from LA in the mid 90's" by many critics, before selling zero records and being dumped. When Nels joined, he made the band totally crazy! Vocals by Carla Bozolich. Scarnella -- Just Carla & Nels. Droning noise with burst of beautiful guitar brilliance. Some vocals by Carla. This radio show has a continuous 36-minute performance. Watt: Encore! Mike Watt calls his music Punk Rock because Minutemen were called Punk Rock. It's some combination of punk ethic with jazz expansiveness. On this CD, Watt does a lot of great songs from other bands, Minutemen, Ball Hog, etc, with Nels doing shreaking guitar solos. Nels even sings Madonna's "Secret Garden," then, a new "Nels Cline trio" song (with Watt and Bob Lee as the trio). Mike Watt sings most songs, also, Carla B, Nels, etc on vocals. If you like KING CRIMSON, I'd hightly recommend the Nels Cline Trio. If you like bands like MMW but wish they rocked more, you might like Banyan. If you like the modern combinations of Jazz, Hip-Hop, rock, funk, and experimental music, but you hate the hip-hop, you might like Watt! One thing that defines all of these bands: they are angry and demanding. They make great "stoner" music as well as for careful listening, but they are not uplifting in the manner of Phish... Here are the CD's again: Nels Cline Trio - 4/25/95 ("from the vaults") Geraldine Fibbers - El Rey - 6/7/96 (w/ Nels) (classic show finally ready after 2 1/2 years of post-production) Scarnella - KBOO-FM - 11/25/98 (Nels & Carla) Mike Watt: Encore! - 12/10/98 & others (/w Nels/Carla/Petra) (1hr13mins of great encore material/covers) Banyan - 2/2/99 (w/ Nels & Watt) --G
From: SYockus@aol.com Subject: DAT>Musical Fidelity X24>DAT Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 00:10:38 EST Has anyone played with this $499 product (X24) from the British 'Musical Fidelity' company? It has a new 24-bit/96-Khz Burr Brown DAC in it. The unit recognizes 44.1 and 48 Khz digital input, and it has a digital out. This unit is supposed to enhance the sound we hear at playback by accepting the incoming source's digital signal and "internally processing the data @ 96Khz with 8x oversampling and 24 bits".....Even though DAT>X24>DAT would not be creating a true clone (my concession to the purists) and granted DAT gives us 16 bit (correct me if I misquote) capability on playback, I'm curious if there is/would be an appreciable difference in sound quality on the clone? Either way, I'd be curious to 'blind listen' to my decks with and without it in the loop. Curious and scraping some $$ together, Sean Yockus
