My computer seems to be running slower and hanging up more and the odd
program crashes... I scan disk and defrag very often.. a friend of mine says
I should reinstall windows and it would clear things up.... but that means I
would have to re-install all my programs and some I don't have the
masters... :-( do you know of any program that does house cleaning and
organises your computer without having to reinstall win95 and all my other
stuff.... thanks fer the input... kk

THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! The proposed tree(s) are in the
preliminary stage & may not even happen.
I'm writing to you in mass to ask if you want to join our upcoming batch of
tree(s) of this '77 spring run? We HAVE NOT made an official announcement
yet. See the attached email explaining the way I've been working on getting
these into digital format.
See also the attached email of our welcome & description for our new mail
list, pertaining to these proposed aud only trees.
4/25+26/77 is what the 1st tree will be that Mike Hall, Tim Buller, Dave
Sorochty & I have done a lot of work on this past week. We have set up a
mail list for the preliminaries for the said trees. We have 5 other members
that are going to be in the top layer as trunk/branch leaders. We want to
have everything in place (the whole top layer) before we announce it & have
sign-ups. We'll even have our own domain name & Tim will host the pages on
his server.
It would be nice if you could take a top layer position, DAT or CD & you can
pre determine your kids if you like. We only ask that you commit to making
at least 4 clones & stay with use for 5 batches, about 10 shows total. Do
you want to be on our mailing list to see what's going on? Worse comes to
worse, even in the event you don't. want to be in the top layer, we can use
your input, otherwise I would've not written you!

So what is the -Teddy "Good Bear" AUD Tree?? Well, here's a short description...items in quotes are from Teddy...
"If anybody is looking for HQ sbd sounding tapes, these are NOT those tapes. However, they are rare & generally what circulates in aud's are generations from my masters or from another taper's tapes at the time, Barry Glassberg."
"The ones I recommend currently are ALL aud's but are NOT HQ like SBD's. I'm one of those people that prefer SOME "energetic" aud's over sbd's & these IMO are "energetic"."
"I'm working on getting the remainder of say 5/3/77 (and any other better copies out their from this run) from Barry's masters in order to have the complete best "aud" copies of these shows."
The tapes will be coming from CM (Cassette Masters) -> (Panasonic AM/FM Stereo "boom box like" w/condenser mics)>various equalizers & editors>CD or DAT.
The 1st 5 tree rounds will be the best of what circulates of the spring '77 run.
Upcoming shows to be converted to CD/DAT include:
4/25/77 - ALL, 4/26/77 - ALL "I sat 1st row center",4/30/77 - 2nd set, 5/1/77 - ALL, 5/3/77 - up to RJ cut then from Wharf Rat to end, 5/4/77 - ALL "A hot PITB > Comes A Time", 5/28/77 - ALL, and others....

1. Turn tapes around within 7 days of receiving your tapes...if you can't meet this, you MUST communicate the delay to your parent, children and the

2. NO PROFITTING FROM THIS TREE!!! ONE FOR ONE TRADES OR BLANKS AND POSTAGE ONLY!!! All profitters and bootleggers will promptly be reported to www.wtf.bootleggers&lowlifes.com and their assorted, nefarious nasty booger-picker tape trading lists...%^0...we will also report you to Intrepidtrips.com and have your guess of the weight of Furthur disqualified and thereby cause you miss your chance on the Bus in the summer on The Search For Merlin...
3. Ensure you can live up to the number of kids you volunteered to do within the 1 week time frame, if you need to change this, email Admin, Mike Hall at myko@well.com and change the number of children you have volunteered to do, no sense in overloading yourself and causing problems for others...
4. Post to the Admin when you have sent trade/blank tapes to your parent and when you have sent tapes to your children. Please don't make Admin chase down problems. This disturbs his retirement and retards his efforts in the Search. The manner in which these postings will be done will be dictated by the membership size.
5. Be courteous and save Admin some work!! When structures are posted, begin talking with your parent and children right away, open the lines and establish what problems may be ahead. Get to know each other, work out trades on the side, etc....Communicate all delays/problems with your parent/children...if you will be off the Net for a short period, communicate that to your neighbors to avoid Admin getting unnecessary email.
6. We will do our best to communicate with you, please do the same in return. Please no DEADBEATS, FLAKES and LIARS...we are looking for HONEST, reliable folks who enjoy the hobby of tape trading and get a kick out of spreading the music!!

Hey guys,
I thought I'd take this opportunity to say this is so much fun this hobby we
have & I'm glad to associate with other heads such as yourselves!
I also want to keep you up to date as to the progress of my conversions for
these '77 analog masters I have to the digital domain. I have almost a
complete set of CD's made up for most of my masters, so I don't. need to
keep using them as they are getting old & deteriorating rapidly. Besides,
they leave a residue on my cassette decks heads. I have to clean my heads
every time I play just one tape.
1st a little of the process I've been going through to do said conversions.
These conversions started out several weeks ago when I got my computer CDR
drive. The 1st few days were trial and error. I'm working with "Cool
Edit96", "GoldWave" & others to get it to my computer as well as edit the
"wav" files & then burn to CD.
After finding the right levels I got 4/26/77 to sound pretty good with only
minor editing by way of equalizing. It sounded good on my computer as "wav"
files. Making the burn to CD the 1st couple of times resulted in a slightly
distorted, along with a touch of hiss, on the finished product.
To get rid of the distortion I lowered the volume along the entire waveform
& burned another CD. The result was much better & I think this one is ready
as a seed, even though I think I can do better when I get a new better
soundcard.
On 4/25/77, I completely changed the sound from the original. The result is
almost no background noise & a feeling that the Dead are playing for a few
hundred rather than several thousand. I think I found the honey on this one.
4/25/77 still is energetic sounding, even though I edited the hell out of
it.
So what did I do on 4/25, after getting it to my hard drive, you ask? The
1st was to "noise reduce" in "CoolEdit96". The specs were:
After "Get Noise Profile from Selection":
Noise Reduction Level = 70
FTP size = 8192
Number of statistical snapshots in profile = 96
Precision Factor = 10
Smoothing Amount = 1
Transition With = 0 db
I then equalized in "GoldWave" using the following:
60Hz = 5
150Hz = 6
400Hz = 6
1000Hz = 6
2400Hz = 6
6000Hz = 5
15kHz = 4
Also in "GoldWave" I echoed as follows:
Delay(s) = 0.100
Volume (%) = 40
Reverb = check marked
Then I normalized, lowered & raised the volume where needed so the waveform
was more uniform. The entire process takes days for just one show.
This seems to give the best results. Their are hundreds or more combinations
of these settings, but I think these above works best on 4/25. If any of you
have done this sort of thing before, maybe you can think of other things to
try.
I'm not sure we want to get 4/26 to sound like 4/25 in feel, because it
might take away from the overall energy of 4/26 which was originally
recorded from a 1st row center energy perspective!
I'm going to send Dave, hopefully this week, 4/26 on:
(2) 45m DAT's
and 4/25 on:
(1) 90m DAT, waiting for shipment of blanks to arrive.
Included will be examples of the 2 different sounds for both dates as
described above. I'll put the examples at the end of the DAT's after the
complete suggested seed versions. Dave can compare the 2 & make his
recommendations as to which sound to use for the tree or suggest that we
wait for a better seed.
I think he'll find them more than adequate to go with as is, as I trust his
judgment to determine this.
Dave, as for the CD's I'll be sending you of the same shows, I'll burn them
when you decided which version to go with & send them on the next batch.

It should be added that while cue sheets can allow you to avoid breaking up
a wav file into tracks, there is some minimal work that 'needs' to be done
if one wants fades and the like on a disc. I prefer to make CD's that don't
'simply' sound like I just played a DAT for 74 minutes then cut the damn
thing off because of the length of the CD. I'm not stating that fades and
other mastering techniques can't be worked into previous methods. Just
rather that if you're going to master something to CD, take the time to
Master it. Efficiently and fast won't always give you the best sounding
result.

to myself. If you have never heard this band before, I can describe them as
"Southern groove rock with strong bluegrass overtones." They have a nice
down-to-earth sound. So if you want to check them out, drop me a line

shows are on 90 meter tapes but I could also fill 60's if you want).
