From: Robert Ian Hoffman <rih5@columbia.edu> Subject: Cable Question Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 01:47:40 -0500 (EST) Sorry that this question isn't digital, but it does deal with my DAT deck. I have a Sony M1 and use a monster cable 1/8"->RCA for analog dubbing. Recently, I have had problems with the left channel almost completely dropping out...this is occuring through the cable (or the jack) and levels are normal on the DAT player. The other thing is that there is a hum which is sent through the cable that registers around -8 db on my analog deck. When ever this hum is occuring, I can give the cable the slightest tap anywhere...and it usually goes away (or it may require a few taps). I'm pretty sure it isn't the 1/8" jack because if the hum is occuring I can tap the cable without it really moving in the jack and the hum goes away. Lastly, if I touch the 1/8" male plug on the cable with my finger it generates the hum...it depends if I touch the tip or the ring (I think this is the right terminology) for generating the hum in either the left or right channel. Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks, rob rih5@columbia.edu

At the very least > there are fade ins/outs. What if you want to boost the volume, EQ, All these can be easily accomplished on a stand-alone. It's actually much easier to control and listen to EQ in the analog domain (assuming you like your equalizers and speakers, of course) than the computer, which at least with Cool Edit and an average-quality analog output, is largely guesswork. But please read carefully -- when I do what to use the computer, I just take the stand-alone-produced CD-RW (erasable disc), read it into the computer at 4-16X speed, and work on it from there. With all the trouble people have with digital soundcards and sample rate conversion, this really is a valid alternative (with some advantages and drawbacks, of course). thanks --G
From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: human league '82 Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 06:32:55 EST Hey kids I'm looking for good tapes of Human League playing in '82 - I do have some shows from that era, as well as an excellent tape from '95, but it's generally very hard to get good tapes from '82 for Human League. Needless to say I don't expect anything from DAT clones, nor do I need an analog-DAT version either even though that would be nice. I have a lot of excellent tapes that would probably please any fans of Human League (and other "similar" music), please email me directly at GaoBest@aol.com cheers mike

The software I use on the PC works fine. I use Adaptec CD creator and COOL EDIT. Here are the steps :-) - transfer your DAT recording to the HD using Cooledit - select the first track - select SAVE SELECTION from the file menu - type the filename, mostly TRACK01 - delete the selected area - continue with selecting, saving and deleting the tracks - start Adaptec Easy CD creator deluxe - select all your TRACK01 ... TRACKXX files - select the option DISK AT ONCE - and burn the whole thing :-) Ramon

Reply-To: cunningham@PSC.EDU Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 11:26:06 -0500 Someone stated: >Increase the volume before any other processing (sample-rate conversion, EQ, >NR, whatever). What does Sound Forge do when you've normalized and then EQ with a curve that requires more power, (like adding lots of bass). Does it perform an automatic gain reduction, or overload/compress or what? Anyone got any solo Gans on tape or CD they'd be willing to share? I'm opening for him and want to see what I've gotten myself into. Thanks, pUNK

Almost every song that you'lll hear on recordings like What Burns Never Returns are reproduced as is live, and it fully kicks ass. The last time I saw them play was at Coney Island High here in new york, they opened up with a quote from somewhere defining hell and then proceeded to blast the most intense, ululating, fucked up progressive lilting shit. Check them out in march at the black cat, or 9:30 club down in DC. I havent taped any of their shows, unfortunately, but if someone does, i'd also be down for a B&P. The next time their in new york, I'll be there, dat in hand, so I'll be able to return the favor.. James Hoey Staff Writer E/Town: The Home Electronics Guide http://www.e-town.com Jim@e-town.com

Thanks to some kind tapers I have a few Phish DATs to listen to. However I am looking for good bluegrass DATs for my collection. Del McCourey Band, Tony Rice, Seldom Scene, David Grisman Quintet, Sam Bush, Festivals....anything you've got I'd love to work a trade or I can send B&P. I have some good bluegrass on analog if anyone here actually listens to their old tapes anymore. Please drop me line (off-list) if you can help out. It would be much appreciated.
