From: Andrew Gustin <gustin@leland.Stanford.EDU> Subject: monitoring errors on the DA-20 Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 12:33:29 -0800 Hey all, Both the Tascam Tips-N-Tricks page and previous posts on this list have said that one can monitor the error rates on the DA-20 by turning the timer to "repeat play" and holding down "record mute" and "open/close." Well, I've tried that and it's not working for some reason. Do I have to turn the deck off completely first? When do I hit "play" in relation to those other buttons? I'm sure I'm overlooking something very obvious. If someone could contact me and help me out, that'd be great. Thanks Andy
From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re:Hypercardiod VS. Cardiod Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 12:28:52 -0800 "Hi, I was wondering the applications of each these patterns (when would = you use cardiod over hypercardiod and vise versa)." The hypercardioid is more directional than the cardioid. It works better when the hall acoustics are bad (the hypercardioid will pick up less "mush/mud") and can also be used to cut back on crowd noise, etc (like if you can't put your stand up 12+ feet). Since the hypercardioid is more directional, the positioning is more critical(IE aim is more impt). If you're stealthing hypercardioids it is more critical to hold still than if you're stealthing cardioids. From the phish tapers section, I think the hypercardioid is generally a better choice unless the venue has really good sound to begin with. This generally isn't the case in basketball type arenas from the tapers section. Phish FOB is another story, then the cardioid is a better choice(its less susceptible to movement, plus FOB generally sounds better and less muddied than further back). At smaller clubs it depends more on the situation. If the sound is good and the crowd is well behaved then the cardioid will probably give a "fuller picture". If the sound is muddied and/or the crowd is rowdy then the hypercardioid (aimed properly of course, generally at the stacks or towards the outsides of the stacks for a slightly better stereo image)will pick up less mud/mush-mush as well as less crowd....Pete

From: Jeff757844@aol.com Subject: Record Stength ?? Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 20:45:31 EST I was talking ot the service rep that's looking at my M1. He says whatever is wrong with it is in the tapes, tapes being Sony DDS tapes. He said that they are not recomended by Sony (no supprise) because they have a require a stronger signal to encode the music. I was unaware of this fact, and haven't seen it anywhere else. The only difference I knew was that they are cut from different parts of the drum, and the DDS had to be certified. If anyone knew about this or have any other info about it, I'd be interested. Or, mabye the guy didn't know what he was talking about. On a side note, I've found the service to be decent with sony. Even though they had me send it to the wrong place, their still going ot pay retun postage and the guys gonna clean it. That's a plus in my book. Anyone else seen Sony audio 60m DATs at Circut City?? Only $14.99 a piece!! I don't get it, they sell DATs, but no recorders... Thanks for the bw, Jeff Dawson Jeff757844@aol.com

A man after my own heart. I posted previously regarding Gary's opinions on standalone recorders vs. a soundcard, and he never replied. I feel he's adding another step of possible signal degradation by going from dat to standalone-cdr to cd-rom of pc and then to hard-drive (??). And then back to dat? How the hell were you doing that again, Gary? So many steps I forgot... =========================================================================== Charles D. Check with Len to see what value of capacitors he used(or just ask him if his bass rolloff box was designed assuming line in or mic in(of a sony portable)). Line-in and mic-in have difn't impedences so the capacitor value (the two capacitors in the bass rolloff box)chosen depends on if one is going line in or mic in. If Len picked capacitors assuming you would be going line in, and then you go mic in it may not work/vice versa(once I did the math but I forget the trend now). For more info on this check out Marcsounds web page- it gives formulas, etc....Pete (assuming everything checks out and your tapes are still too bassy, perhaps you need to swap out capacitors to roll off at a higher frequency)

However, the D5 has superior I/O, with fully balanced analog and digital. It also has SPDIF optical.>> Quick question, when I saw an advert in London for the Fostex D5, the sign mentioned that it was Tascam, despite also saying "Fostex D5" - so is Fostex owned by Tascam? Since both machines are physically identical, it made me wonder if Tascam manufactures both machines and if it owns both the Fostex and Tascam brand names (or if it's Fostex owning both brand names)... just curious about this. Most importantly though, will either machine work with the Sony D100, as I do'nt have the PCM-M1 machine that Andrew mentioned using with the Fostex D5. I know that I need to get a good home DAT that will avoid the SCMS problem, and it seems that the Fostex D5 and the Tascam DA20 are the best quality & value decks to use... any other suggestions are of course appreciated. It's true; but did he say just what the difference is? DDS tapes are spec'd to a higher coercivity than audio dat tapes, but the difference is trivial. (DDS tapes are within the spec for dat tapes.)
