Billy was in rare form. Did anyone out there happen to get it on DAT? I'm also interested in trading for other Joel dats. Please e-mail me and hopefully we can trade. Regards, Dan

Comes with SoundForge XP, the "lite" digital audio editing software. As one who remembers editing 1/4-inch tape with razor blades and an Edi-Tall block (Bless you, Joe Tall!), the ability to cut and paste audio in the same way as with a word processor (even the same commands) is amazing. We use it for the Golden Gate Radio Orchestra reference CDs; no problems. Peter Weiglin www.radiorch.org

Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks, Your second "problem" is normal, but the first one isn't. The problem where you have to tap on the cable is most likely caused by a bad connection somewhere in there. Eventually, you'll have to replace it. The second "problem" is caused by the electricity in your body sending a signal to the RCA inputs on your preamp--nothing to worry about! It will happen with any 1/8"-to-RCA cable. Peace, <> David
From: KindTaper@aol.com Subject: Anyone like Babe the Blue Ox? Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 01:50:18 EST I taped them tonight in Atlanta and would love to trade. Very interesting show. Only ~50 minutes long, it will fit nicely on 1 cd or a 60M. The source is SBD>SBM-1>D8. If anyone is interested, please send a list. thanks, Wes

You could record less-bassy shows. :) Seriously, it is a problem with some shows, but in general I think it gets it about right most of the time--getting enough bass to groove to, but not so much that it overwhelms the speakers. (Most shows I tape are in small clubs or coffeehouses--where the bass is heavy, I use the roll-off. But they always have less bass than a night club, stadium or sports arena.) There was one concert I taped where I could feel the bass through the enitre show, and the tape still had way too much bass. I can only imagine what it would've been like if I hadn't used the bass roll-off module. I think part of the problem is that the CSBs are too sensitive to bass in the first place, but for a pair or $250 mics, they sound really good overall. (Core's High-End Binaurals, for example, are reputed to be less boomy.) Another problem is more basic--the bass roll-off feature is fixed, and it's going to be too much for some shows, and too little for others. It seems to me that it is a necessary compromise, unless you're going to have multiple settings. Peace,

How the hell were you >doing that again, Gary? So many steps I forgot... it's definitely possible to lose a bit here or there since cd drives are usually not bit-accurate (except for the plextor drives or if you're using EAC), but it's a logical way to go about the transfer. burn to cdr or cdrw on a standalone extract the audio to your hard drive edit it all you want, get the tracking just right, burn a final cd. if you use cdrw's for it, you can even erase and reuse the discs. As long as you are careful when extracting the audio to the hard drive, there should be no signal degradation at all. allan chen ================================================== kaiyen@stanford.edu Stanford University http://www.stanford.edu/~kaiyen History, Class of 2000

How the hell were you doing > that again, Gary? So many steps I forgot... If you subscribe to the "bits are bits" theory, the extra steps don't effect the music. There are both advantages and disadvantages to any method. Each digital soundcard solution seems to have a drawback (no sample rate converter, forced SRC to 48K, poor Windows/PCI compatibility, high price, or ??). With my method, you save buying a digital soundcard, and you get two burners instead of one. --G

Then CUNNINGHAM@PSC.EDU asked: > What does Sound Forge do when you've normalized and then EQ with a curve > that requires more power, (like adding lots of bass). Does it perform an > automatic gain reduction, or overload/compress or what? I should think it would simply clip. I doubt seriously that it would do any automatic level-adjust or compression. Note I didn't say you should _normalise_ then EQ, just that if you're going to boost the volume you should do it before any other sound manipulation. If you're planning to EQ with substantial gain in some bands, you need to leave headroom for that. Adjust the volume to leave your peaks well below 0dB. Maybe -6, depending on how much EQ boost you intend to add. I will admit I hadn't thought about this one, but you will get marginally better results by doing the volume boost first. Check the statistics again after EQ to ensure you haven't clipped.

BUT, this week my friend won two tickets to the show so I AM GOING! A few things: 1 - If you are also going to the show and DATing (like me), let me know... 2 - Do Dave and Tim allow board access at all? I have an ADAT that I could record the show with as well... 3 - The setup I will be recording with is CSB-->D8. No Mic stands are allowed (according to the Music Committee) 4 - I will post a write up on the show, and a way to trade for the DAT (or CDs). I'm guessing that I may be one of the few (or the only) people DATing it. Anyway, I'll mail everyone Monday to let you know how the DAT turned out...
