Maybe I'm missing something here, but a DA-20mkII uses a different key combo to view error rates. You hold the REC MUTE button and press the COUNTER MODE button. To switch the display between A, B and AB, you press the AUTO ID button. later, brian -- Brian Krahmer - brian@krahmer.com - http://www.krahmer.com Expert 3.0 - Intelligent Network Security - http://www.L-3Security.com

If the master tape is 48 kHz, you're stuck with either transferring to 44.1 using the dat deck's D/A converter and standalone-cdr's A/D converter, or the standalone-cdr's sampling rate converter. That might not be as good as your computer's (software) sampling rate converter. Otherwise, dat (44.1) -> cdr copies bits. CDR -> hard drive copies bits. Editing on hard drive is what you want to do anyway. Hard drive -> computer cdr copies bits. > Each digital soundcard solution seems to have a > drawback (no sample rate converter, forced SRC to 48K, poor > Windows/PCI compatibility, high price, or ??). Software sample rate converters can be better than any on a sound card (they can certainly be at least as good, by using the same algorithm). They can be slow and eat your cpu for hours, but cpu time is free. Forced SRC to 48K loses. > With my method, > you save buying a digital soundcard, and you get two burners > instead of one. Of course, any standalone burner costs a lot more than a high-priced soundcard. (Even more than the soundcard plus a second computer burner, though I haven't seen any statements about what sort of system is required in order to burn two CDs simultaneously without underrun.) Seth

I only notice 2 mini plugs, but no mention to digital. Although I've read that it has using some adapter cables, is this ok for connecting to a digital interface (ProTools or similar)? Can I use this portable deck as my main deck for some time, untill I buy a rack mount deck? Thanks Helder Luis

From: "John Q." <zephead1@mindspring.com> Subject: re: bassy csb's Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 18:38:27 -0500 Unforunately, I learned this after I purchased the mics. >From what I understand, the bass roll-off function does not work when using Line in. This is problematic for obvious reasons, as we are told as a rule to use Line In. I tried plugging into Mic In, only to have my tape ruined by distortion from hell (brickwalling) If I would have known this prior to purchasing, I would not have spent the extra cash on the roll-off feature. Len did tell me that the Mic In could be used, but only with a cable that acts as a "pad" to prevent brickwalling. I'm sure he could explain this much better than me. Len?????? -John
From: al young <sugarcrafty@juno.com> Subject: Sony M1 & Graham Patten DMIC-20 VS. DA-P1 Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 15:40:28 -0800 i just want to tap the technical knowledge of the people of this fine discussion group. I am in the process of deciding what to buy. Wanted some feedback on purchasing a deck. I'm getting mixed feedback so I thought some more information would help me finalize my decision. Can anyone give me some input on whether it would be better to purchase an M1 along with a Graham Patten DMIC-20 VS. DA-P1. My understanding is that the DA-P1 comes with a 16 bit A/D converter, pre-mic and phantom power built in. I also understand that the GP DMIC-20 comes with a 20 bit A/D converter. Will this extra 4 bits provide that much of a sound quality difference. The other thing is, from what I've been reading, the tascam only allows for 2 hours using the built in battery/powersource. Does this mean I'll have to purchase an additional external power supply w/the DA-P1 if I wanted to record a show that was longer than 2 hours? Also, does the DA-P1 have bass roll-off? My understanding is that the M1 & the DMIC-20 does not, so if i'm using a set of mics that does not have bass roll-off built in on the mic am i screwed with this set-up? My only beef w/ the sony is that it feels like a cheap little walkman -- any thoughts on that? Lastly, can anyone provide me info on other pre-mics and their costs (especially something w/ bass-rolloff)? Other pre-mics that I have seen on my recordings include sonosax, beyer mv100, lunatec V2. Is there a web-page that compares/contrasts them?? ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. From: Daniel Barton <dfbarton@bellsouth.net> Subject: Overburning CD-R's Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 21:07:36 -0500 I've heard the term overburning used occassionally with cdr recording, does the term refer to a technique that allows you to 'squeeze' additional minute(s) to a 74 min cdr? I have a cdr that I want to copy that contains 76 minutes of music, all of which I want to keep. Is it possible to fit all 76 minutes on a 74 minute cdr by 'overburning' the additional 2 minutes? I know that 80 minute cdr's are available at a higher cost, just thought I'd ask this question since I didn't know what overburning means. If the cd burner and/or software are a factor, I'm using a Yamaha 4416s with Easy CD Creator. Thanks in advance. - Dan Barton
