Were you (the person I was quoting) trying to say that somehow > normalizing "dirties up" the sound? > > mrberwell > > First off, I do normalize from time to time, but I don't recommend it as a mastering technique. Yes, normalizing and compression are two different animals, but they are both used for boosting levels and so forth. All normalizing does is multiply the wave by a certain number, which not only boost the signal but also the noise. This is why I think that compression usually sounds smoother and a bit punchier than normalizing, which is why I recommend it. The main reason why I recommended the compressor in Sound Forge is because it is already there and paid for, and although I agree that it is not the best compressor, I certainly wouldn't say that it sounds bad. Definitely not transparent, but not bad if used correctly. So far, I like using the Waves NPP and Cakewalk's Audio FX1 compressor the best for Direct-X based compressors. Normalizing is a nice quick and dirty way of getting a hotter signal, but I would strongly disagree that there is no way that it can do any wrong to the signal. Just like any tool, there is a way to screw things up whether you are using compression, EQ, or normalizing, etc. I didn't mean to imply that normalizing "dirties" up the sound or was causing these glitches that this guy was having. I was simply trying to recommend other ways of getting more quality out of a 16-bit signal. All in all, if the music sounds good, who cares what techniques you used to get there? Peace, Dylan

Compression boosts the lower-level sounds by more than the higher-level ones; therefore, it would be expected to increase the noise more than the signal. It does result in a signal that's higher-level, so it sounds "punchier". (As a general rule, louder sounds better.) It is, by definition, a form of distortion, but often a euphonic one. Seth
From: "Drew Harrington" <drewh@bitwise.com> Subject: Programmed Recording Reply-To: <drewh@bitwise.com> Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 11:35:47 -0700 Hey All, While programming my VCR to record Ani on NPR today, I couldn't help but wish I could talk my DAT deck into doing this for me. It would also be nice to talk my receiver into changing channels mid-day without user intervention. Then I though - all these components have IR remote control interfaces, and "smart" programable remote controls exist - does anyone know of a remote control that is easy enought to program that I could give it a long sequence of operations including waiting for specific times of day and days of the week? I'm looking a level of sophisication that would allow me to do something like this: "At 12:59pm select tuner as source on the receiver, select analog as source on DAT deck, press record on the DAT deck, at 1:01pm press stop on the DAT deck, at 3:29pm select digital (maybe from DSS) as source on DAT deck, change channel on DSS receiver (Much Music Maybe), Press Record on DAT Deck, Press record on VCR..." You get the point... Anyone know of a product that would let you do something like this? I personally am looking for a Buy (not Build) solution. Thanks, Drew

From: "Rich880" <rich880@tmlp.com> Subject: Looking for Perri Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 15:26:29 -0400 I'm looking for any live recordings anyone may have of Perri. They are vocal group of four sisters who had played with Anita Baker as backup vocalists on her first couple of tours and Pat Metheny had brought them out during a few shows in the early 80's.Their big claim to fame was that they had recorded a few Metheny covers with lyrics in place of Pat's solos, and they followed Pat's guitar note for note.Any recordings you may have, with Anita, Metheny or even Perri by themselves would be greatly appreciated. Please email me if you can help. Thanks for the B/W, Rich
From: Scott Olsen <scott_olsen@yahoo.com> Subject: building binaural mics Reply-To: so16@prism.gatech.edu Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 12:33:40 -0700 (PDT) I was wondering if any of you out there have had actual experience building any kind of biaural stealth mics. I've read the description on Ted's page (http://www.arches.uga.edu/~tidmarsh/binmic.html) and know the basics of how it is done, but I was looking for first hand advice, diagrams, instructions, ect. Where to buy and what are the best parts to buy would help too. Also any info that you think might go along well with this (how to build the better roll off filter/battery pack or what 20bit A>D to use with this little rig if needed) would be nice. From: pherbig@ralston.com Subject: MD Report gizmo Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 14:54:09 -0500 A couple of posts in the past few days have referred to the MD Report I/O and power-supply box for small Sony portables. While bopping around the Web, I found a couple references, with Pass Audio Ltd. and ASC as manufacturers. I noted that there seem to be a couple of versions of this guy, as well as some conflicting photos of the "large" unit between manufacturers. Confusing. Has anyone actually used one? More importantly, is the phantom supply/preamp any good? This combo arrangement seems like an awfully good idea, making it easier to use XLR condensor mics with a D8, plus incorporating an external battery. It also strikes me that the next logical feature of a box like this (from a taper perspective rather than a journalist) would be to build in a digital SPDIF patch bay. Opinions? Pete
