From: PhiShow@aol.com Subject: ISO: Weir and Hanson (seriously) Reply-To: PhiShow@aol.com Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 00:11:49 EDT If anyone has this bizarre show on tape, I'd love to trade for a copy of it. Not for dancing purposes, but for my radio show. I think Rob Wasserman and Jay Lane played as well, it took place at the Wetlands 10th anniversary bash. Lots to trade in exchange, no Hanson though. -Jordan

All it does is normalize using a >certain formula to figure out how much to amplify based on the volume of >that section of music. CORRECT ANSWER !!!!! >>>>>:::::DOUG:::::<<<<< Here....You'll have to excuse the' Denise Buffington' name at the beginning of my post's. That is my girlfriend with an 'auto-sign'on our e-mail. I'm new to the list.....Hello fellow DAT heads!!!...any way James U R right on the $$$ with that one!!! Compression kills the dynamics of music!! It is a great tool for acoustic based insturment's (drums, vocals, acoustic guitar,& bass) & for individual use....but as a whole it is overused!! Imagine it as a 'invisable' wall between the music & you!!! If used on individual tracks -1- mixdown -2- mastering -3- & played on the radio, satellite, or transfer to MP 3 or a wave= 4 invisable "walls" on the music. As a songwriter/guitarist/ singer I was frustrated why the "Dynamics" of my music was lost in the recording process. Plus having a very sharp ear I heard my original guitar sound being lost in the 3 to 4 layer process of tracking to finished product. & Cymbals BIG TIME!! I have used compression on live recordings (2 track, condenser mic.'s) to keep the levels from distorting to Mini-Disc....(which has a level of compression as well,) Just keep the threshold low & light and you won't lose much of the dynamics.....I recorded a swing band recently & this process worked great!!!.....Let's put the dynamics back into music!!!! If you use DAT for live recording..same process....When you master on your CPU just edge your levels up (volume) a 1/2 a decible at a time to get it up to "0" db........... Much better than using compression for level adjustment!!!!!!! great point James!!!!! Peace...:::Doug:::... check out my live clips from Mini-Disc on THRUST ! page........ www.benroth-entertainment.com Drums are too loud but hey it's a 'live 1 take recording'!!!

I stumbled across this in my research>>>>> "ISIS" 20 bit 8 INPUT/ 4 OUTPUT 1/4" breakout box ( separate from card ) PCI The card has..... CDs are made of _really_ strong plastic, and dust just doesn't cause that much friction. Unless you're attracting something like a grain of sand, dust particles are really unlikely to do this kind of damage. I personally use (probably) the same Case Logic case for my backup CD-Rs, no problems yet. My guess is that it's something else; was the disc in excessive heat? Was it exposed to extreme handling or anything else that it shouldn't have been? >I feel that my ultimate solution is going to be labeling all the Cdr.'s that >I make. This will protect the surface. I know that I have used and received >some disc's that look like they don't have this kind of a printable surface. >It looks like the dye's are sandwiched in between two plastic layer's?? Any >vendors out there that can comment on this?????? The dye is actually between more than one layer, including a micro-thin metal layer. Some people swear by them, but I really recommend against labels, unless you absolutely _have_ to. The reasons are that when the label comes off, it might take part of the disc with it. (The label will probably start to peel off by itself someday.) Also, it makes the disc heavier, which isn't good for marginal CD players, and labels make the disc wobble more, even if it's applied correctly. And it's especially a problem in CD-ROM drives, when you want to rip audio off of it (or if it's a CD-ROM disc); sometimes it has to be slowed down, because of the extra weight and wobbling problem.

This is just a shot in the dark, but plastic interaction is a real pain. Back in the old LP days, there were paper sleeves with plastic inserts, which were great -- except some plastics reacted with the LPs and created a mess, resulting in noise, and sometimes even sticking permanently to the LPs. I replaced hundreds of these liners with with so-called neutral plastic liners. There's been a long discussion about using proper markers because of chemical interaction. Could this be another example of such an issue between the CD holders and CD backing? Anyone with good chemistry info think that's possible? Dennis http://maltedmedia.com/

From: Ferdinando Ametrano <ametrano@altavista.net> Subject: Springsteen show recordings Reply-To: ametrano@altavista.net Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 15:38:31 +0100 Hi all TAPING: as a taper I am an absolute beginner. I bought Sony PCM-M1 and Core Sound High End Binaural in order to tape the Springsteen show of the current tour. I recorded 2 show so far and I was unhappy with the results. The sound is muddy, compressed, not clear. I was right in the front of the speaker, in the seated section (so noboby between me and the speakers). I never peaked over zero, the peak level is around 4dB, so I guess I had brickwalling. I was taping using the mic in, the mic attenuation switch at -20dB, 48KHz, without battery boxes bass roll-off filter. Should I use line in or the battery boxes bass roll-off filter ? I was using the additional small caps that come with the CSHEB, in order to have a little more directionality. I'm sure I had something wrong since a friend of mine taped one of those 2 shows with his PCM-M1 and cheaper mics, similar seat and same DAT recorder setting (mic in, 20dB attenuation) with way better results I know that I should just try and learn, but I have no time: every test is a Springsteen show missed, so I would appreciare any help. TRADING: I have excellent recording of Barcelona April 9 and 11, and Bologna April 17. I'm looking for Milan (April 19 and 20). I would also like Cologne and Munich thank you ciao -- Nando
From: "Denise Buffington" <virtualart@mindspring.com> Subject: Universal Remotes.. Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 09:58:26 -0700 Jeff wrote: >But do they have the ability to do those commands with timer control as Drew >asked for? The SL-9000 doesn't appear to. >-Jeff Lester Hey Jeff...:::DOUG...::: here again. I install Home Theater for a living & have been doing it for 5 years. Most complex Universal remotes have a "time macro" feature....Meaning when you press one button it can send out several commands at once. In additon there is a sleep timer as well. One could use the sleep timer in reverse....with all compnents off...it will turn on assigned units....it depends on how you set up the timed macro...& commands, It takes a while to set up, & with a DAT you may have to manually program it's infra red commands, & set it up where it can easliy send the commands to all components used, - A " infra red" transmitter, ($ 150 -$ 200 ) receiver & emmitters attached to the perspective A/V components may enhance this type of set up. I advise ...of course being in the room for your initial test runs. Most complex Universal Remotes have the Day/time in them for this type of timed sequence. Also to simplify a Sony Mini-Disc has a timer feature, that when it receives power it auto records (plug in to an "switched outlet" i.e. Home Theater reciever) if course Mini-Disc is not DAT & you have the 74 minute time limitation but if you have "optic" digital out from your satellite receiver the quality is great. What I have done on the music channels from satellite is record at the same time on my VCR to see the song title & artist as you hear your digital play back. That way you can edit out songs you don't like & register artist & title on your DAT or Mini-Disc!! You do get compression from satellite & radio transmissions so, when you do this style of recording & hear playback & hear somthing you like, be assured it will sound even better when you buy the CD!!!! Enjoy Peace!!!>>>>>:::::DOUG:::::<<<<<

From: John Bunge <jab18@cornell.edu> Subject: my $.02 on the Behringer SRC2000 Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 11:08:08 -0400 I own and use one of these units and am quite happy with it. I paid $200+tax at my local dealer (special order). I have not yet checked whether it strips start IDs along with SCMS. However, I did test it extensively in other ways, and I can report that live music recorded at 48KHz and sample-converted to 44.1KHz through the SRC2000 sounds noticeably better than the same music recorded originally at 44.1KHz, at least to my ears -- this seems to contradict some (possibly older) advice to the effect that recordings destined for 44.1K should be made originally at 44.1K. Best regards to all, JB
