I recently purchased a D8 and have taped 3 or 4 shows. The tapes saound
great but I have one problem. The deck won't let me ff to the one min mark
before I tape. I keeps reading blank (which the tape is). Is the common
practice to press play until the tape is at 1:00? Also my tapes don't want
to display absolute time. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Robert,
You have to _start_ recording A-Time from the very begining of a tape, with no gaps, or else it
won't ever read. You cannot add A-Time to a tape afterwards, unless you clone it using another
deck. You can't get to "0.1.00" of A-Time by using "PLAY or "FFW", until it's already been
recorded onto the tape.
Try this sequence & see if it works for you:
Power up the deck, then load a new, absolutely unrecorded, clean blank tape. Wait for the deck
to load & cycle to the "0.00.00" time display, then press "REW". The deck will then flash "TOP" a
few times, and then return to the "0.00.00" display.
Now press "FFW" a couple of times, like you're doing a program search for already existing Start
I.D.s, and load up a couple of numbers in the search register. The deck may / or may not show the
"BLANK" message again, but pressing the "FFW" button during the time it flashes will eventually
convince it. Allow it to roll all the way to the end of the tape, then "REW" back to the begining
to pack & repack the tape.
Now set the counter mode to "A-Time", press "PAUSE / RECORD", again allowing the deck enought
time to load & do it's thing, then "PAUSE", after you've made sure that there is no signal present
on the meters. Record the silence for a minute of A-Time, then "PAUSE" the deck in record mode,
set your levels & check all your connections again.
This does mean that on all your tapes the music actually starts at Program #2, and that all the
A-Time numbers are -1 minute from the actual reading (excepting tape time remaining!),but you'll
soon get used to it. ;) Hope this solves your dilemma, Have Fun!

Interestingly enough, these two problems are related. When you first put
a new blank in, hit REW to make sure the tape is at the beginning. Then
record blank space for the first minute. For you to have absolute time,
the recording must start from the very beginning of the tape. After you've
recorded the blank minute (or a little more) you can hit pause and wait
until you are ready to start recording, or if you are doing the one minute
of leader well before you are actually going to be recording you can record
a little over 1 minute and then REW back to the 1 minute mark and hit stop.
Then when you are ready to record, your tape will be at the 1 minnute mark
and you will get absolute time.

However, 1 minute of dat is the outer several loops of tape, so it
should be plenty. (On 10" reels, 1 minute is a lot more tape, but
the loops are also a lot bigger.)

Subject: Help on the Way? Hooking up a DAT deck to a Linn Numerik D>A
Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 14:33:46 -0400
I purchased a used Linn Numerik D>A converter for my home stereo. It has a BNC type spd/if input connector which I am trying to hook up to my Denon DTR-80p. I have a BNC > coax cable, but the Numerik can't seem to be able to synch up with my DAT. Has anyone ever hooked up one of these to a DAT deck? I also have a SV3800 which I could use, but I'd have to get a different cable. My Linn dealer has tried to help but to no avail. Anyone have any insights as to what may be going on here. The numerik claims to be able to do 48khz and 44.1 khz. We know the numerik works because it works fine with a Linn CD-player. The DTR-80p also works fine. Help on the way?

This is all related. The tapes won't show absolute time unless you record
from the very beginning of the tape. And fast forwarding will be a problem
unless something's recorded on the tape (which it wasn't). You should
record a minute of blank noise (or crowd noise, or something you don't
need) before you record something important. (This is true of every DAT
deck, not just the D8, BTW.)

Subject: Need advice on new portable equipment
Date: Thu, 22 Apr 99 14:44:39 +0100
I'm a newbie on this list and this is my first post. I need some advice
from live concert tapers on which equipment to purchase. I am sure this
ground has been covered many times but your help would be appreciated.
Last years I was the victim of 2 robberies. In the first I had my baggage
stolen along with all of my portable recording gear, and then my house was
burgled and I had all of my hi fi equipment stolen. Firstly I want to
replace my portable gear and that is the subject of this post.
Up until recently I had 2 setups. The first I purchased in 1992. It was a
Sony TCD D3, external battery pack from Sonic Studios and Sonic Studios
DSM6 mics. The second setup was a Sony TCD D7 and a Sennheiser MKE 66
stereo condensor microphone.
I need a setup which is easy to conceal. Security in the UK and especially
Europe can be quite tight, and I have to be able to use it in small clubs
without being seen.
I have contacted Sony UK who told me that the M1 portable is now
discontinued and the D8 is on back order from Japan with no delivery date.
Therefore my only current option is the Sony D100.
What is the length of record time you can get with 2 AA batteries?
Are there any other types of battery / reliable rechargeable batteries
that will give longer record time.
With regard to microphones, I always felt uncomfortable when using my old
Sonics as security wisened up to them and challenged one of my friends. The
Sennheiser MKE66 is no longer made. The nearest replacement is the MKE 44
which retails at about 350 UK pounds. The only difference is that it is
balanced and has phantom power.
I would like to get a single stereo condensor mic. The option of mounting 2
mics in a hat is not really on as nobody in the UK or Europe wears hats at
gigs.
Can anyone suggest any viable alternatives to the Sennheiser MKE44 that
they have personally used and are happy with.
Please email me privately so as not to clutter the list.
Your help is much appreciated.
Dave

hey folks,
I'm tossing around the idea of selling my month-old Tascam DA-P1. I
purchased it just over a month ago from Masterpeice A/V. I've taped a
couple of shows with it and have decided that I'm going to go a little
stealthier. The deck is pretty much brand new with just a few hours of
use...I have the original box and receipt with all the original
accessories and manual. I also purchased a 5 year extended service
warranty for it which is transferrable. Also, an eco-charge beta system.
The eco-charge is the brand new modified model that they just started
selling with two power outputs (XLR). I paid just under $1800 for the
deck, eco-charge & warranty.
I do not want to lose a bunch of money on this deal so if I don't get a
reasonable offer, it just simply wouldn't be worth it for me to change
decks...
If anyone is in the market for a DA-P1 setup, please email me
privately...
thanks for the B/W
peace

Old Case Logic cases had this problem. I had a non-record club disc (and a
few others) in one in a car, in the summertime, when it was hot. The label
was partially lifted off, and there's still some of the picture in the disc
holder (it was a pretty thick label), and some of the slip's imprint on the
disc itself. Needless to say, I don't use that case anymore. :) But Case
Logic seems to have learned from their past mistakes, and the new ones
don't seem to stick to the disc at all.

I own a Sennheiser ME 64, and find it exactly as you describe: crisp,
lacking in warmth. I'd try a pair of Oktava MK012s. They are very
detailed and warm and generally a better mic all around IMHO.
