My apologies. That was not my intention. I often forward the digests to my
home and this one must have inadvertantly gotten into the wrong box. Again,
my apologies to all concerned.

Howdy folks-
I may not be remembering correctly, but wasn't American Digital offering 100
CD spindles of this new generic, TDK-look-alike, type disc for like $.89 per
disc? As I said, I could be wrong, but if anyone has any information about
the discs and/or where I can get them, please drop me a line.

This SRC 2000 that Behringer makes seems to be the unit coming to us directly
from heaven. I mean; its what we all have wanted! It switches and routes
signals between the multiple digital formats, does sample rate conversions,
does signal distribution, and even removes jitter. Oh yeah, forgot to say;
ITS A STRIPPER!!!! Retails for about $250.00 clams which means we should be
able to get them for about $200.00 USD. That thud you just heard was me
collapsing. Check out the site (very sexy detailed photo there too). I
havent been this excited since I mistook a glue stick for my deoderant!

I find this hard to believe....and this is the first post of the kind that
I've ever sent. Around Feb. 4 I set up a trade with Jeff Irish. After
trying to contact him when the trade was finalized, I finally receieved an
e-mail from him adressed to about 8 other people and myself. He said he
was having deck problems but they would be solved soon and he should be
able to get people their tapes. After receiving this message, I sent
tapes around Feb. 18. I have yet to receive anything from Jeff, nor have
I received a response to any of the e-mails I've sent him. Maybe there is
an explanation...maybe there isn't. But I wouldn't trade with him.

hey everyone
i know these sound like silly questions, but i'm a tad confused...
1. i'm dubbing now using two D100s and the 7pin/7pin cable. i have a DAT
master in SP and someone has asked me to copy it for them in LP, so how can i
do it (i need this explained to me in severe layman's terms, as if i'm
younger than an infant, because i get easily confused with machines)... I
assumed that by setting the back of the "record-to" deck to LP that despite
the clone, that it would go to LP, but it is still copying in SP. Any
suggestions? please email me privately, ta
2. I'm somewhat convinced about buying the Sony R500 machine based on quite a
few recommendations/etc (thanks everyone!) - so if I dub from a Sony D100 to
the Sony R500, are there different sources for the cable required (for
cloning) and is there an industry-standard for the cable name? I may just
order the cable from whoever I buy the R500, but at the same time I'd like to
know if there are other options, or if it's just best to buy a Sony cable
since these are two Sony machines.
thanks in advance
ta
mike
ps - i'm still interested/looking for some more Pink Floyd DAT traders, i
have a couple of super-low-generation DATs (ie, Master>D>D, compared to
"basic" clones of uncertain generation) and would just like to expand my DAT
collection. ta

In the message, please tell me of any personal experiences with

This is of course correct. However, (a) the loading/unloading of tape does
involve several loops of tapes (plus, a loading problem can occasionally
cause a transport jam that only occurs / gets noticed after some time of
playing), and (b) the dust that gets collected on the stored tape does not
only affect the outer loop, for one thing, the particles collected on the
outer loop are very easily transported on the next loops via the guides of
the transport - this problem does not only affect DAT by the way.

With linear coding, yes. With better coding schemes, not exactly.

A recording that peaks at -12dB is a 14-bit recording. One that peaks
at -6dB is a 15-bit recording. For rock music (where the maximum
volume level is pretty-well known in advance), I'd try to set the peak
musch closer to 0.
Seth
>>
Seth,
I believe you're confusing dynamic range with resolution. A 16 bit (linear
or nonlinear) digitized recording with -12 dB below 0 dB dynamic peaks IS
STILL A RECORDING WITH 16 BIT RESOLUTION and has all the important signal
details that 16 bit digitization can provide in audio fidelity.
The fact is, being conservative in setting VU peaks at about -12 dB VU on
most portable decks is a benefit in reducing overall IM distortions as the
voltage rails of the analog processing circuits 'brickwall' at just above the
0 dB VU mark. Pushing average VU levels above -12 dB VU on such decks causes
a non-linearity distortion that gets worse the closer the analog signal gets
to the supply rails.
Short duration peaks that approach -6 dB to even 0 dB VU are not a problem in
audible quality reduction, but having AVERAGE signal levels above -12 dB VU
is audible in reducing the clarity with distortion products.
I would recommend being conservative in setting VU levels with portable decks
in general. Later normalization in wav file format allows bringing up
digitized volume levels with no real quality liability. Turning up the
volume control for listening is not that big a deal.
However, running 'average' signal levels too hot (above -12 dB VU) on most
portable decks will give a definite and audible loss of quality that is quite
permanent.

A friend of mine recently purchased the philips CDR765. I am considering

discs that it requires. I've heard that you can fake out the machine and

How do you do it? I have also heard a rumor that they are somehow changing

have they introduced this change yet? Any help is greatly appreciated.

power mics. They are capable of supplying 48V with the addition of the

belt clip. These are perfect for powering mics for a D7/D8/D100/M1 or

Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com

It's a shame that digital devices like the Berringer don't pass start
ID's (don't know this for sure about their Ultracurve EQ-plus device).
Of course, if you use an analog EQ or do an analog level change,
to copy your dat, you lose the start_ID's too.
I had a very simple idea of a way around this... DAT decks could
be designed so if you had the digital & analog inputs in use at
once, and the selector on "analog," it would take the music from
the analog and the start_ID's from the digital! Sadly, dat
manufacturers never take my ideas.
I once had a deck, the Tascam DA-60, that got around this
problem by having a simple two-wire connection to pass the ID's,
separate from the digital and analog I/O. You simply connected 2
DA-60's with a wire, and you could run the audio between the
machines with any path you chose. Only trouble was, DA-60's
were about $6000 each.

I have a Sony D-3 that died with a tape in it. Which is not unusual,
usually I give it a day or two and it relents and gives the tape back.
However, it seemed to die for good last month, so into the Sony shop it
went. The estimate was $600(!) for a new transport (+ some other stuff).
Of course, I told them to send it back.
The question is, do I give up on this one or can it be revived for a little
less cash? Any suggestions?
