I am looking to pass my collection of Grateful Dead dats to someone else. I
have already sold my machines and now need to part with my collection. I
have over a hundred dats looking for a new home. Send me an e-mail and I
will send you a list. I am not looking to make any money- just cover the
cost of the tapes when I bought them. If one person wants them all I would
be a happy man but I will break up the bunch as needed.
Thanks,

I am planning on buying a new set of mics ASAP and have been looking
at Neumans and Schoeps.
I have been leaning towards the Neumans because they are a bit
cheaper. The models I am considering are the KM 184's and the TLM
103's. Further I have been leaning towards the 103's because they
appear to be a better mic.
What I am interested in is any first hand useage of both of these
mics to tell me how you feel about their performance. I am
interested in how each fairs in the environment too as I plan on
taping outside as well as inside.
Secondly because I may spend as much as $2,500 on my mics should I be
buying Schoeps instead???
I plan on using a Graham-Patton AMIC-20 as a microphone pre-amp & D/A
converter. Thanks for any helping hands on this decision.

I found these on the Web, and thought that they would be of interest.
Here is an inexpensive kit to supply phantom power. Not very "stealthable",
but potentially useful:
http://www.qns.com/paia/phantom.htm
Here is another possibility, but no price is listed. This one mentions
eventual S/PDIF output:

Hi,
I just started using the phantom power on my DAP1 for the first
time & it looks like there's a problem. I get fairly large amount of
distortion using all the condenser mics I've tried. The distortion
appears with higher sound levels (acoustic guitar as a source)
regardless of the input setting or -dB readings. I've tried many mics
including KM184's, AKG's, AT's & Shure.
No problem with Dynamic mics like my stealth mics, they work
great in the mic & 20dB pad settings, so the preamp is'nt
distorting. The distortion occurs whether the tape is running or on
hold. These same condensor mic's work fine into other equipment.
Phantom voltage in the DAP1 measures correctly at 47 volts.
Has anyone seen this problem before?
Anyone know a good inexpensive repair facility in Chicago?
Thanks
Gary

Hey all,
Two questions that I'm hoping I can get some input on regarding a Tascam
DA-20 mkII.
1) Is there anyway to estimate the number of hours on the heads of the DA-2O
mkII from the deck itself? In other words, I've been told the deck has super
low hours. I'd like to try and verify that other than just looking at it.
Any suggestions?
2) How does one access the error counter on the DA-20 mkII? The market
posting notes that it has a real error counter, but it's not clear to me how
to access it.
My thanks to anyone who responds. If all goes well, I'll finally be out of
uni-decker land and looking for trades!
Peace,
Adam

Yes you can. In fact, one of the standard tests run by stereophile is
to play a CD that contains something like a 1 kHz signal decaying well
below -96dB, properly dithered, and showing the frequency plot of the
resulting signal. The 1kHz signal dominates the noise for at least
another 10dB (that is, a properly dithered 1kHz sine wave at a level
of -106dB is audible as a 1kHz sine wave).

hey everyone
not sure if anyone attended, but how can i find a songlisting for Sam
Prekop's performance at Bottom of the Hill (SF) last night, Thursday April
22? and what were the two encore songs, I assume they were both Sea and the
Cake tunes, but I'm clueless on titles. Set was about 64 minutes or so,
pretty good, but nothing what I was expecting. I felt like I was in a posh
hotel bar with a live soft-jazz-vocal band performing... not sure if this is
a good or bad thing.
Also what does the "FOB" thing mean, since I work for an importer, I always
think the "free on board" (logistics term) when I see "FOB" but I'm guessing
it means something else in the tape world. Never saw that phrase until DAT,
either.

hi,
rushing out of town last week, i dropped off a bunch of packages of tapes
to go out from my local mail box, etc., and it seems that 21 tapes went to
the wrong person!
the tapes included a bunch of 70's Jerry Garcia Band shows, one Jerry show
from Portland '82, a few Hot Tuna and a Jorma show, a JID show from
November '98, a Yes show from Europe in '74, and a Carol King performance
from Boston.
I would hate to have to re-tape all 21 of these so if you got them, PLEASE
let me know! i will be happy to cover the expense of getting them to the
right person and spinning you a couple of gift tapes for your kindness in
having to save me the trouble of having to re-dub all 21 tapes!

Hey now,
I have a decent balcony recording of the Phil & Phriends
4/17 show...I used binaural mics with a D8 and it sounds pretty good.
However I missed the opening two minutes of Dark Star from the first set
because they killed the house lights and started the show in like two
seconds and I was not fully set up( anyone else have this problem??) If
anyone would like to trade for the first or second night that would be
cool..as long as the missing DStar does not throw you off..........CDR or
DAT is fine by me.

If the master isn't recorded in 32kHz (which is very likely), then you
have to make an analog copy to go to LP. I'd start by asking why
somebody prefers LP; they might not realize what they're asking for.

Kristen will be premiering her new touring band (which will actually include
a few members of her old band, Throwing Muses) at an early (8:00 pm) show at
the Knitting Factory next week. She's very taper friendly (just talk with
her manager/roadie/husband Billy before the show) -- board patches are
allowed, subject to venue approval. I'd tape this show myself but,
unfortunately, I'll be out of town. If anyone out there is willing to go
make a board of this show, I'll pay for your ticket.
