Reply-To: nick@millerworks.com Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 10:34:18 -1000 Hi All, Well, it's been many months since I retired from the DAT-Heads Community [having sold off my collection last year], but I must say I miss you guys every now and then. Anyhow, I happened to get this a couple weeks ago and thought of all of you. Please excuse the waste of bandwidth if you guys have already seen this. I still receive the DAT-Heads Digest [even though I've tried cancelling numerous times ... oh well, once a DAT-Head ... always a DAT-Head., so I figured I would forward it on for your enjoyment. Aloha, Nick Miller ***** Q: How many listserv subscribers does it take to change a light bulb? A: 1,343 - 1 to change the light bulb and to post to the list that the light bulb has been changed; 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently; 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs; 27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs; 53 to flame the spell checkers; 41 to correct spelling/grammar flames; 6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb"; another 6 to condemn those 6 as anal-retentive; 156 to write to the list administrator about the light bulb discussion and its inappropriateness to this list; 109 to post that this list is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion exchange to litebulb-l; 203 to demand that cross posting to grammar-l, spelling-l and illuminati-l about changing light bulbs be stopped; 111 to defend the posting to this list saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts *are* relevant to this board; 306 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty; 27 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs; 14 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and the post the corrected URL's; 3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this list which makes light bulbs relevant to this list; 33 to link all posts to date, then quote them including all headers and footers and then add "Me too"; 12 to post to the board that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy; 19 to quote the "Me too's" to say "Me three"; 4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ; 44 to ask what is "FAQ"; 4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago on Usenet?" 143 to ask "what's Usenet?" *****

From: KPS61@aol.com Subject: Taping @ Roseland Reply-To: KPS61@aol.com Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 17:58:11 EDT I would like to tape an upcoming show at The Roseland in NYC. There are general admission tickets on the floor & then seating in a balcony. The balcony seats cost twice as much as the general admission seats. I'd appreciate any input from someone who has been to a show at this venue. Which seats are likely to be the best bet for making a nice recording ? Thanks, Kevin

From: Jmratman@aol.com Subject: Chris Duarte Reply-To: Jmratman@aol.com Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 19:07:30 EDT Hey! Taped Chris Duarte a few weeks ago @ The Stonecoast in Portland, Maine. He's a super nice guys and encourages taping PROVIDED that you are kind enough to offer him up a clone (add that to BTAT). If you're not familiar with his work, it's blues based guitar i.e he encored with a cover of "Sunshine of Your Love" that was electrified!! www.chrisduarteband.com is his web page. If anyone's interested in a trade, e-mail me. My rig: Neumann KM140's>>Beyer Pre-amp>>DA-P1 about 20' from the stage. Sounds pretty good. The show ran about 1:35. I am now faced with replacing this cable assembly to >correct the problem. The phenomenon is called microphony: where physical movement (usually of a cable or transformer) produces an unwanted electrical signal. It's usually caused by changes in capacitance between signal conductors and/or the screen. Any cable susceptible to microphonics needs to be replaced. >I have connected these through a cable (using a 5-pin XLR to a 3-pin >1/8"-stereo-male). The cable is 6-feet in length, 3-conductor cable, >stranded copper, which was from a generic audio cable (perhaps a headphone >cable). As has been said, ensure that the two colds go to ground. Also make sure you use screened cable and use the screen for ground. Ideally, the left and right signal conductors would be screened from each other. Unbalanced cabling for mic level signals is never ideal, but 6 feet should be okay unless you're in a very hostile environment. >My question is... Is this cable picking up this noise because of improper >shielding? (and if so, what type of bulk microphone cable is recommended?) >Or is the cable picking up this noise because it's an Unbalanced circuit? >(and if so, what is recommended schematic for a balanced stereo cable?) You'll certainly pick up noise if the cable isn't screened. You may also get noise pick-up due to the unbalanced nature of the inputs. Any microphony is due to poor or inappropriate cable. Gordon Gidluck wrote: >Connect the cold signal lines to ground also. This is a common practice >with balanced to unbalanced conversion cables. By unbalancing your >cable, you get a drop of about 6db (if I remember right) overall. In this case, because the microphone is floating, there will be no signal loss. >A direct-box can be used to convert balanced signals to high impedance >and vice-versa. The passive (transformer based) boxes go both ways. I'm not quite sure what you're suggesting here. All passive DIs I've come across have transformers with a turns ratio of 10 or more. If you connected a lo-Z mic to the "one" turn, you'd get 10 times voltage gain, but the source Z of the input would be transformed down by 100 times. I can't see that working. >... Better impedance matching results in better signal >transfer and wider bandwidth. Almost all audio interconnections nowadays are bridging where the load impedance is typically ten times or more the source impedance. The aim is voltage sampling, not power transfer. This is certainly true with lo-Z mics where a typical mic has 150ohm output impedance and a typical mic amp has 1.5Kohm or greater input impedance. Nick

I've heard that there are a lot of tapes out there, but I've never really known anyone who traded them, so I figured I'd ask here... I'm also a unidecker, so I'd be asking for B&P... Also, I'm always looking for any Eric Johnson recordings. As far as the taper need, there are a few shows that I'd love to get taped, but they're too far for me to go right now... Eric Johnson will be playing in the band "Alien Love Child" on May 13 and 27 '99 at Antone's in Austin, TX... Stealth is required... I'd gladly replace blanks, etc... As to better A/D converters being worthwhile in particular situations, that depends on: all the equipment involved, what the tape is to be used for, the room acoustics, how much you care about the recording, how good your ears are, how good the playback will be, etc. Taping phish from the middle of a coliseum with inexpensive mics - probably not. Taping solo vocal in a studio with $3K mics, undoubtedly so. > The fact is, being conservative in setting VU peaks at about -12 dB VU on > most portable decks is a benefit in reducing overall IM distortions as the > voltage rails of the analog processing circuits 'brickwall' at just above the > 0 dB VU mark. Pushing average VU levels above -12 dB VU on such decks causes > a non-linearity distortion that gets worse the closer the analog signal gets > to the supply rails. This flies in the face of every DAT deck manual, recording book, and magazine article I have ever read. > Jesse seems an idealist who may of course do as he likes in setting his own > recording levels, but reality is not impressed with changing the physics. Not only are the aguments presented completely unconvincing, but nobody else in the industry makes them. If one really believes using a 16-bit recorder as a 12-bit recorder sounds better, due to listening tests or whatever other reason, fine. But I believe it is important for everyone else reading this list to know that the technique presented is not by any means accepted practice.
