My set up is as follows Oade Stealth Mics->Sony PCM-M1w/modified preamp. I wanted to see if anyone has tried this feature. My results were excellent my levels were right on and I didn't see any big fluctuations. Any feedback would be appreciated.

His name is Jeff Irish from Dallas Texas. I responded to his desparate plea for any Blind Melon. He said he was sending his tape right out, so I sent him my tape and have never heard back from him since. He has ignored email I have sent asking what the problem is. In my years of trading, I have never been ripped off before and would warn anyone else thinking of trading with this guy to forget it. If Jeff ever does send me my tape, or explain to me why he hasn't, I will gladly retract my statements about him. I just wanted to warn other DAT Heads about him. Take care. From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re: Recording resolution: this time the facts #920 Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 13:54:17 -0700 Where your volume knob is turned to upon playback is very important IMHO. Given the same playback system, a "conservative" recording with peaks at -12dB (or -6dB or whatever)will not sound as good as the same recording made with optimal levels(optimal to me is nailing the levels before the show starts and then (getting lucky) and occasionally going over for very small time durations). Not only are the stats (such as THD+N)of the A>D (of when the recording was made)not as good at the lower recording levels (this "garbage" then gets amplified upon playback)but the analog amplification and playback (amp>cables>speaker)process itself (bc you must turn up the volume knob to get the desired loudness for a "conservative" recording)will add yet more noise(a diginormalization will help this aspect though). Both of these will contribute to hiding some of the finer details of a recording made under ideal recording conditions...Pete

Kevin- I've taped several Ben Harper shows at Roseland from the general admission area. I have never been in the balcony, but the sound on the floor was good. It just gets very crowded. Also, if you are planning to tape a band that does not allow taping, they frisk at the doors (at least they did all the times I went), so you'll need to take steps to conceal your equipment well. Pushing average VU levels above -12 dB VU on such decks causes > a non-linearity distortion that gets worse the closer the analog signal gets > to the supply rails. This flies in the face of every DAT deck manual, recording book, and magazine article I have ever read. COMMENT: While everything in the Sony manual is not correct as stated, their DAT recording instructions (Consistently for many models, but who reads these anyway!) do say to keep average levels at or about -12 dB VU without really telling the why's of this. I've just suggested to try out what I've and others have heard with keeping this advice as correct for getting the most quality recording out of using these very fine stand-alone portable recording decks. I recall not hearing this distortion problem when pushing VU levels on the older TCD-D3 deck. Perhaps because this D3 deck had an adequate voltage supply system for running the linear signal processing circuits. It certainly sucked enough power (>.5 amps) to indicate something like that was being used internally. > Jesse seems an idealist who may of course do as he likes in setting his own > recording levels, but reality is not impressed with changing the physics. Not only are the aguments presented completely unconvincing, but nobody else in the industry makes them. If one really believes using a 16-bit recorder as a 12-bit recorder sounds better, due to listening tests or whatever other reason, fine. But I believe it is important for everyone else reading this list to know that the technique presented is not by any means accepted practice. Jesse -- Jesse Lackey, Ithaca, NY my personal page: http://www.lightlink.com/jesse >> Perhaps we should rename this the "Hard-Heads Digest!" I'd certainly be first in line to join! Using any 16 bit A/D system anywhere within it's input range_is_still_using_a_full_16 bit system with all the benefits and limitations of having 16 bits of signal resolution accuracy. Dynamic range and signal to noise ratio (where the confusion is all about) is still so great and the noise floor is so low with digital systems, that getting the best performance by running just 12 dB lower average signal levels below 0 dB VU (out of a total of 96 dB or more of dynamic range) is very smart and entirely appropriate with at least the current 'pocket sized DAT portable decks' used as stand-alone recording systems. Even some larger non-pocketable portable decks have similar limitations to some degree. Each model of deck (and auxiliary equipment) should be carefully evaluated for its strengths and weaknesses. Wise compensation for recording system shortcomings can 'level the playing field' in giving equivalent quality results against very costly equipment used for the same purpose with the same inputs. With the same microphone input, running conservative VU levels will indeed allow recording quality to be virtually indistinguishable from other much more complex systems costing 10 times more and requiring a cart to transport in. However, more sophisticated, power hungry, and complex systems can and do run VU peaks to 0 dB (and beyond) without signal quality issues being raised. I suggest using the compact, affordable, and practical equipment you have wisely and in a practical manner to avoid any possibility of audio quality losses. If you must, 'normalizing' levels later in Post, on a DAW in .wav format. This is all it takes to have VU signal levels hitting zero without suffering master tape'd permanent quality loss. This might be more desirable when trading tapes and least necessary for just home playback purposes. Please let me know if you have a nice clean copy or if you'd be willing to edit this one for me. It was recorded with core sound mics and would be real nice if we could get the bass sounding correct. Please let me know if you taped it also so that I can avoid this extra work ----thanks for BW- have a great day- Barin
