Much music has peaks around 12dB over the average level. (At least,
that's the assumption Sony used when writing those instructions.)

That doesn't make sense. Suppose you set the levels to where the peak
is at -90 dB; do you still think your signal has 16 bits of
resolution? Try it some time, and see if there's any signal at all
(there should be around 1 bit worth, possibly enough to identify the
song if you know it well).

Peaking at -12dB is equivalent to using 14 bits and peaking at 0dB
(assuming perfection of pre-amps, A/D converter, etc.).
> If you must, 'normalizing' levels later in Post, on a DAW in .wav format.

Once you've made a tape with only 14 bits of information (by peaking
at -12dB), there's no way you can increase the amount of (useful)
information on the tape. Normalizing will make it louder, but the
quantization noise will be made corresponding louder (staying the same
relative to the signal).

Subject: duarte board taping question
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 23:03:13 -0500
I have a question regarding board taping. Chris Duarte Group is playing
Bay Fest at Port LaVaca Texas on May 15. I usually tape the show with cores
and D-100 because the soundman always says that chris runs very little
through the board. His amp is so loud on stage that mostly bass, drums and
vocals is alll that is going though the board.
I was thinking about running a board patch (usually XLRs) to a small four
channel mixer with XLR inputs AND use an audience mic ( i have a $200
crappy Sony ECM 909 or something like that) also going to the mixer, adjust
sound best I can through headphones, then go straight into my Fostex D-5.
I know the sony mic is not a great mic and I was thinking about buying an
audio technica AT-something or other that I heard is really good condenser
mic.
has anyone tried something similar to this setup?
question- will I have any problems doing this?
1) echo/delay problem? with the live picking up what is coming from the
stage, will i have a delay problem becuase the live sound wont reach my
micand then go to the mixer at the same "time" my board sound hits the
mixer.
2) will the board signal be too hot to match with a live mic through the 4
channel mixer?
any hints or advice would be appreciated.
thanks

Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 23:44:11 -0700
What's more influential to a recording, the preamp or the capsules?
Does going from your microphone preamp to a excellent 3rd part preamp limit
quality. Would it be ideal to go directly into the external preamp,
bypassing the mics preamp? If so, does that mean if you have a microphone
with a poor preamp, an amazing external preamp will never make you
recordings sound better than the same capsule plugged into a higher quality
preamp plugged into the same external preamp.
I hope these questions don't sound too stupid, but I know nowhere else to
ask them.
Also, what is the best preamp and a/d converter for stealthing? The Zefiro
Inbox appears quite small and supposidly has a quality a/d converter.
Phantom power is a consideration. What is a high quality stealthable
phantom power source

That depends on which (of each) you're using. Generally, I'd say
upgrading the capsules will accomplish more than upgrading the preamp.

Is it possible for the HHb PDR-1000 to accept an unbalanced input (RCA or
1/4")? The manual doesn't make any mention of this. The Teac DA-P20 I
used to own had only XLR inputs but could accept unbalanced inputs through
an adapter plug. The Teac has a switch for unbalanced/balanced input while
the HHb does not. Thanks!!

I've nailed down how to write cue sheets that work, but now want to
insert pregaps inbetween certain selections.
Let's say that track one runs from 00:05:23-00:07:23
and that track two runs from 00:07:23 on.
If we want a 2 second pregap, do we start it at 00:07:23 and start the track
at 00:07:25, or do we start the pregap at 00:07:21 and leave the track at
00:07:23? Ihave tried it both ways, and the total time on the disc always
comes out the same? Do I have to change the start times on subsequent tracks
by adding 2 seconds to the third, 4 seconds for the fourth, 6 sceonds for the
fifth, and so on? Thanks! Carl >>

Hello Matt & DAT-Heads-
We had an absolutely tremendous demand for our $89 100 spindle and
the entire supply sold-out in just a few days. B/c we purchase these CDRs
right off the loading docks we are (literally) waiting for another boat to
arrive. Well...our ship has come in! We will have these extremely popular
and very inexpensive CDRs back in stock at the beginning of May. Boats
arrive monthly, so when these go (and they will fast) we won't have more
until June.
I am very skeptical about inexpensive CDRs. I have seen some pretty
crappy CDRs over the last 2 years. The main reason why we tested these
discs for 3-4 months before we started selling them. Since that time I have
received several other new inexpensive CDRs, and I have to admit they
all have come a long way.
TDK? introduced the 3rd generation CDR about 1&1/2 years ago. This was a
large improvement in CDR technology. The competition is never far behind
and soon Mitsui, Taiyo Yuden, Kodak, etc were using similar technology
and producing excellent discs. My guess is the manufactures of the less
expensive discs have "caught up" on the technology and are now making
very good discs. Different applications will yield different results, of course,
but with all things equal CDRs are very similar within their perspective
category.
Until there is new manufacturing method, with a noticeable improvement, the
new CDRs that have been arriving lately should be pretty good. There is
plenty of old stock, however, so beware.
Thanks-

Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 12:35:02 PDT
I know this may sound like a weird request, but I was in search of
any people out there who may be into taping some bands at Music
Midtown in Atlanta this coming week (April 30-May 2). The site will
be in and around Centennial Park up the street from the former Omni.
The thing about it is you need to be equipped with stealth mics or
just sneak in your shotguns (mics, that is ;) and pre-amps. Also it
would be wise to bring in some windscreens too.
The biggest attraction of course is Widespread Panic and though the
band obviously allow taping, the security/promoters of this fest
would say otherwise to having open mic stands. I know of a few
people who will be taping WSP -- at the same time I'll be taping
Isaac Hayes (aka Chef) while a friend will be taping Hole. For
example, during this time I'd like somebody to tape Norman Blake.
You see how it goes? There will be 4-5 bands playing simultaneously
during every hour. We could even plan it to cover most, if not all,
the bands that would be worth taping. Other cool acts include
Galactic, Blueground Undergrass, Fiji Mariners, Willie Nelson, The
Funky Meters, Everclear, Wilco, Randall Bramblett (sax player from
Parliamant/Funkadelic), Leftover Salmon, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Rick
Springfield (huh huh, just kidding! :), and many others.
Please contact me if you'd be interested in helping tape some bands.
It costs $30 for a 3-day ticket, but it is well worth it! And
remember, you are more than likely going to have to stealth. So if
you have some Core Sound, Sonic Studios, or wanna sneak in say,
AKGs/Neumanns->pre-amp->DA-P1 -- go for it!!! Just as long as you
can get it through the front gate!
And KindTaper@aol.com, if you're out there, get a hold of me too! I
think I remember you have stealthing capabilities, plus you're a
local taper dude like me! :)
For band listings/schedules of Music Midtown '99, go to:
http://www.musicmidtown.com
It will be a STEALTH-A-THON, baby!!!!!! We can make serious clones
of everybody's masters afterwards. Oh, what fun!!
Peace and music,
Brian
