Subject: help with my machine
Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 21:53:37 +0100
Hi everyone,
I'm fairly new to the list and would appreciate some help/advice re: my
machine which no longer works, particularly as I have little technical
knowledge.
I have an AIWA XD-S260 recorder, which developed a fault. Either during
recording or playback, the tape would stop, the caution warning light up and
I couldn't unload the tape or do anything else with the machine. This would
happen at random. The only way of achieving anything was by turning off at
the main supply and turning back on again, Everythhing would then be fine
untilthe next time
I have had the machine sent away for repair - initially I was told it needed
a new motor at what seemed a fair price. Now I have been told that it is
unrepairable -that there is an intermittent mechanical fault and that they
are unable to complete a repair.
Does this machine have a history of problems?
Does anyone know of a reliable repair company in the UK who might help (at
fair prices?)
Has anyone had similar problems and had machines repaired?
Or do I have to consign it to the scrap heap?
If so, can anyone recommend a good machine? I'm on a fairly tight budget .
I have looked through the ads in the UK magazine 'Sound on Sound' and seen
decks within my price range but I don't know what their track record is.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Many thanks & best wishes
David Foley

Hey all,
Sorry for the long silence. The technical DAT-Head Alex Chin has been a
lurker for a while.
Anyhow, just wondering if there were any DAT Heads in Melbourne. I'm
planning a trip there next month... perhaps I could bunk in.
If so, please drop me a line.
And, yes, I'm still here. Just haven't had any new toys to open up lately.
Cheers

Quick Sign Petition to Preserve Red Rocks Park &
Amphitheatre
If you'd like to learn more about this issue, please visit:
http://www.red-rocks.org
Red Rocks amphitheatre is an internationally renowned venue
in the foothills west of Denver, Colorado. Performers and
spectators alike have come from all over the globe to
participate in events at this amphitheatre. Its
unsurpassed beauty, and natural, near-perfect acoustics have
drawn millions to this site. It's a magnificent natural
treasure that should be preserved and protected.
On Feb 18, 1999, the City of Denver announced plans to
renovate this historic landmark. The City's first proposal
called for a number of "improvements" which they claimed
would make the amphitheatre more "user-friendly." A few of
their proposed changes included:
-removing existing landscape to add 400 new box seats
-building a new restaurant and trading post beneath and
behind one of the 400 foot Red Rock monoliths that this park is
known for, although the park already has a well-established
restaurant, trading post, and visitor's center.
-allowing corporate sponsors to display advertisements on the
magnificent red stone monoliths.
-adding more concessions stands at strategic locations.
These are just a few of the City's proposed changes which
would adversely affect not only the character of this historical
landmark, but dramatically impact the park in which it is located.
Red Rocks Park is 639 acres of designated open space, and
one of the last bits of undeveloped real estate on the
western edge of Denver. Any attempt to commercialize this
property goes against the very purpose and intent of
dedicating open space.
We treasure our historical landmarks, and we value our open lands.
On March 2, 1999, Denver's Landmark Preservation Commission
unanimously voted down the City's current proposal, but don't think
this is over yet.
One way that our representatives can be aware of our concern
for and our commitment to the preservation of this
historical landmark, and the open lands that surround this
amphitheatre, is by making our voices heard.

Hello, DATfolk. I'm sending this in hopes of facilitating some trades. I
apologize ahead of time if you think this is inappropriate or a waste of
your bandwidth (for sure, this is better than those whole digest
forwards!). I'll try to keep this short. Thanks for your time.
This is my list of complete shows available for trade. I send CDs, you
send CDs or DATs (in cases for protection). Things that I refuse to deal
with include incomplete shows and recordings with cuts or skips (during or
between songs). The analog-source shows are listed here because I
recorded most of them; therefore you won't find them elsewhere. If you
see something you are interested in or want to send a list, ask a
question, send a comment, etc., I can be reached at jghow@conncoll.edu

I'd be happy with DAT or CDR (including CDR clones of boots) for recent

1. Lucinda Williams
2. Son Volt
3. R.E.M.
4. Neil Young
5. Bob Dylan
There's also a couple of Replacements boots that I'd like CDR copies of.

Hi,
I taped the Smashing Pumpkins shows at San Diego and LA. The San Diego

very close to the right stack. Both were taped with M1>CSBmod and came
out pretty well. I used to post from crazy_diamond@webtv.net. Please

I use the old DOS version of this program, but it's the same principal.
There are two different ways to set pregaps: you can take time out of the
file itself, or you can add 2 seconds to the file. If you are doing this
with one .wav file, then there is no way to "cut" the file so that you
lengthen the time of the disc by 2 seconds. But if you are using two
distinct .wav files, you can use the PREGAP command to add two seconds to
the beginning of a track without taking time out of it. I think this would
accomplish what you are trying to do. In my DOS version, there is a file
called DAO.TXT that explains all of the commands and gives examples, I'm
sure there is something similar in the windows format that you have. Check
it out and see what it says.

I agree with Seth. Although in real life, you get a lot of electronic
noise, which sorts of counts as dither. That'll actually give you a higher
'perceived' resolution.

That is only during the peaks. Assuming the normal level is -12 dB below,
you only have 12 bits of effective resolution. I tend to go over, peaking
at 0, or close to it. So what if I clip a minor few peaks, less audible I
reckon than less resolution.

This depends on the A/D. Some have noise shaping already in the 14/12 bit
signal, so the actual useful signal can be even one bit less. Normalising
will break the noise shaping, leaving you even worse off.

Greetings Friends,
Alaska is starting to melt from the 6+ feet of solid ice/snowpack on my
property this year. This week promises mid 50's and sunny with 30+ mph
winds from the south. Here in Alaska we call it the Chinook winds since
these winds are known to bring fresh King "Chinook" Salmon to our rivers to
start their spawning runs. and yes, several in the upper 40's low 50's were
caught off Deep Creek this past few days.
I hope to be out this Friday. it is said that King Salmon tremble at the
mention of my name...but I think they start trembling cause I often play
Neils acoustic music in my boat while fishing. I guess only time will
tell...
My main reason for writing to you all is that I would like to get a
DAT (or minidisc) recording of Neil Youngs show at Akron, Ohio last night
4-27-99. I have many master recordings including 12 of Neils tour this year
on the west-southwest coast. Anyone with a recording of Neil in Akron, let
me know and I will email to you my updated list.

Subject: GYBE! taping advice
Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 13:34:43 +0100
Happy to say I finally caught Montreal post-rock outfit Godspeed You
Black Emperor! last night (@ Embassy Rooms, London). Sadly I wasn't able
to tape the show. Only other taper I found managed to hit erase on his
MD deck 5 minutes after the show finished (I'm not making this up!).
Anyhow - apart from an obvious grovel for any folks who've been a bit
luckier to come forward, I figured I'd share some info that might help
folks planning on taping upcoming shows...
First off, GYBE! have a ton of kit on stage. There's nine of them (3
guitars, 2 bass, 2 drummers, cello, violin). Not everything is mic'ed
for the PA so desk feeds are *out*. Logical extension of this is that
get the whole sound down, you'll need to position somewhere centre -
stack hugging is a big no no. The stage I saw them on had amps layed out
the full width of the stage - binaurals might sound good here?
I'd been warned that they were fairly loud. They were, but not to Mogwai
levels. Shouldn't be a problem. They did get louder as they went on...
Final thing to note is that the band started playing while the 'between
bands' music was on (in fact you could here the tape playing for a good
90 seconds into the set!). Start recording as soon as anyone picks up a
guitar!
If you've not heard GYBE! check them out - some sound clips are at
http://www.gybe.cx/
Thanks for the bw

hey I was wondering sense the location is so large, something like 14sq
blocks if it would be possible to slide some equipment under the fences. I
know last year there were so many people that once you get in you can do
whatever you want. However the amount of people could be a problem, but if
I remember correctly they had the sound board on a very large scaffolding
setup, so you could set up in FOB. I am working right now with the guy that
does the lights for panic, brian to get a possible patch sense in essence
they are not allowing taping. He said he is going to talk to Mary Armstrong
from brown cat, and Houser to get approval, but this is still tentative. If
I hook it up i'll let ya know.
jeramy
Please contact me if you'd be interested in helping tape some bands.
It costs $30 for a 3-day ticket, but it is well worth it! And
remember, you are more than likely going to have to stealth. So if
you have some Core Sound, Sonic Studios, or wanna sneak in say,
AKGs/Neumanns->pre-amp->DA-P1 -- go for it!!! Just as long as you
can get it through the front gate!
And KindTaper@aol.com, if you're out there, get a hold of me too! I
think I remember you have stealthing capabilities, plus you're a
local taper dude like me! :)
