Subject: MKE 40-1053 specifications and more?
Date: 28 Apr 99 16:55:52 +0100
Hello All!
I learned from a call with Sennheiser that the various MKE40 types I posted
about aren't anymore like in 1995 (when I bought my MKE40-60's).
Basically they only have a MKE40-1053 and maybe a MKE40-60.
The MKE40-1053 has a 1-pin Lemo connector; what does this connector look like?
Is it locking, small, etc?
Does anyone have some specifications of _this_ version of the MKE40?
(impedance, etc?)
The tech I spoke too was kind enough to explain me how to power the capsules
(6-12V, few mA). The small schematic he explained looks somewhat like this:
1uF
+9V ||
----[8k2]--+--||-----
| ||
|
red|
| blue
+--{}-----
capsule
It's incomplete, I forgot about how the ground (signal, ground and so).
Does anyone know how to make this complete again?
Where do I connect the signal leads?
(I don't understand electronics too much)
Greetz,
Udo

Well, I know this is very late notice for the first show, Kristin Hersh,
but I hope someone tapes it - and she definately allows taping, including
board taping (although I'm not sure if board mix would be good or not)
Anyway, please write if you'll be taping any of these shows (or are even
thinking about it). I have good DATs to trade of all the bands listed.
Wish I could get up to NYC more often to see more of these myself!

We are getting tons of positive feedback on our new 80 minute CDRs.
These discs are silver, blank face on top with an aqua blue record surface.
They are manufactured by Hwa-Hsin and if you have used either Sony
or Taiyo Yuden CDRs you will recognize them.
Finally! A reliable 80 minute disc. It's out there, swimming around with
some real lemon 80 minute discs. If you have had a bad experience
with 80 minute discs in the past don't give up. There is a good one
available. The price is great too. $1.39 each on spindle of 100. About
the same price as TDK or Mitsui discs, but you get an extra 6 minutes!
Thanks-
Dan

Hey all,
Just on the off chance, did anyone get a good (or any) tape of the Crash
Test Dummies on KFOG yesterday? Or, I believe they were going to replay part
of it on the morning show this morning, but I'd (of course) prefer the whole
show.
I've got a nice crispy aud from the Fillmore show for trade.
Bandwidth tithe: CDR(2) B&Ps of said show for the first two replies.

Subject: M1 renumber problem
Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 09:58:48 -0700
I've had a few instances of my M1 acting up during the renumbering process
after assigning track IDs. At certain points on the tapes it will shut
down, read "unload", then "load" and refuses to continue renumbering. It
has attempted to eat two tapes doing this. Has anyone else had this happen?
I realize that the renumbering works the unit pretty hard and probably
isn't a good idea, mostly I want to figure out if it's a deck problem that
should be serviced, or if I should avoid the renumbering process altogether.
thanks, all...

i got the cheap audioexcel snd card from work and added it in with my
sbawe64 value..so there are no conflicts and both will play sound...
my problem is that the spdif/out plug on teh card does not work .. i have
the sony rk-da10 coax>7pin cable (swithc is on digital) and plugged that
into the card and then the 7pin into my D8.. set the record type at 44.1khz
and powered it up and popped an extra blank in for testing,...
when i play a 44.1khz 16bit sound file anda start recording on the D8 i get
no levels regardless of the rec level setting.. can anyone give me some
insight as to why my spdif out port is not working .. i know its a shitty
card but want to see how well things sound.. if i can get out tow ork im
gunna go buy an extra phono female to wire onto the 2pin header on the
board that is for spdif/in

First off...sorry for the lack of DAT content. Since I am at work, I can not
tell you off the top of my head the extact model number I currently own (I
believe it is a 870). Anyway, It is one of the original players that allows the
"swap" trick.
A long story short- I bought the player in November and have burned 8
disks. Two nights ago, I burn one using the swap trick and afterwards did the
"finalize" process...only to find a blank disc.
The player did not display any probs. during the "OPC" cycle and made it
through the 'finaliz" process with no interuptions.
I used a TDK 74 min disc...... given the scenario...what might be the
problem??? Any suggestions.

Hi Tod and fellow DAT-heads
Regarding the Sony Outlet Centers: If the Outlet has refurbished in stock,
D-8s sell for $299 and the new ones sell for $499....
Regarding D-8 vs. M1, I prefer the D-8 simply because of the voltage
differential. Because they run on a different voltage, M1s must be put at
the end of a daisy chain after all the D-8s. Other than that, I'm not too
familiar with the M1 unit and I don't know if there are any pros or other
cons.
BTW, anyone else going to Jazz is Dead in West Hollywood on May 2? I'd love

Remember, hitting a peak of 0 dB does not cause diginoise, it causes
clipping. Depending on the musical material, and how much it is clipped, it
may not be audible, be slightly audible, or sound very distorted. There's
no doubt that a little (0.5-1.0 dB) is rarely audible except on pure tones.
Perhaps the reason to record at lower levels is to spare the mic preamps?
It's relatively easy to demonstrate that a DAT recorder does best recording
peaks to 0 dB, and I'm sure people here have done those experiments, but
probably (like me) only with line-level signals.

Subject: Soulive - Please Tape!
Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 20:46:30 -0400
Hi Dat-heads,
<This band bio has been copied & pasted from www.soulive.com>
The organ trio, known as Soulive consists of Neal Evans on the
Hammond b-3, Eric Krasno on guitar, and Alan Evans on drums. Their
music can best be described as ³live soul groove², the type that wonıt
allow you to stay seated.
Alan Evans was one of the members of the original Moon Boot Lover.
He also played with the Greyboy Allstars & Karl Densonıs Tiny Universe
based out of San Diego, CA.
Neal Evans was also a member of the original Moon Boot Lover. For
the past couple of years Neal studied piano at the Manhattan School of
Music with mentor, the late great Jaki Byard.
Eric Krasno, founder of the group Lettuce has been entertaining the
Northeast for the past several years. During this time, he has been
studying at Hampshire College with the legendary Yusef Lateef.
Not until this year 1999 did the three get together to create this
fresh new sound that listeners these days really need. Itıs a minor
miracle that the timing for this group happened. With all members in
the same frame of mind, headed down the same musical path, derived
from similar backgrounds, itıs no wonder the sound is so tight.
<rest of band bio snipped>
I've been lucky enough to see these guys 3 times already and they
are simply amazing. I'd describe Soulive as a group consisiting of
"Two brothers who are brothers, and one brother from a another
mother." (This description will make sense as soon as you see these
guys in action.)
Unfortunately, I only have one analog tape to speak for the shows
I've seen. (This is due mostly to the extremely anti-DAT taping
policy of the HOB in Cambridge, MA. Luckily, the band talked the HOB
into letting me tape their most recent HOB show on analog.) I would
be more than happy to transfer my c(m) onto dat or spin a second gen
analog tape for anyone who'd like to check these guys out. Hopefully,
I'll have some Soulive DATs to offer up in the near future. If anyone
out there already has some Soulive on DAT, please drop me a line.
Anyhow, I've included their upcoming dates in this digest for your
convenience. Please do yourself (and everyone) a favor and start
taping these guys!
Thanks for the space,
Mike Wilt

The benefits of using this unit are that it supplies phamtom power to your
mics, and you also have the onboard EQ adjustments to sweeten the tone of
cheap mics. (Perhaps these two features alone will be worth the ~$175
purchase price.)
The cons are it is just another cheap little analog device, which will some
noise to your signal chain. The quality of the pots are not very good,
(it's fine when the unit is brand new,) but when it starts to get old and
the pots get a little dirty/damaged you might find yourself with some
unwanted scratchy noises caused by any slight wiggling of the el-cheapo pot
knobs.

Hi there,
after I was forced to stay away from the internet (and from DATheads) for
too long, I thought I'd again get a little trading going. Here's my two most
recent "acquisations":
* Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4-23-99 Hamburg, Docks
FM broadcast of the ENTIRE show (2 3/4h)
* Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
4-26-99 Zurich/ Switzerland
Hallenstadion
GREAT Audience DAT (sorry to use this language for my own tape but
this is really way better than the ones I did in Munich, Cologne or
Regensburg)
Entire show , again 2 3/4h
If there's enough interest we could think about maybe treeing the Petty
thing...
Greetings from rainy Munich, Germany
