From: Aaron Westendorf <westea@rpi.edu> Subject: ISO:Help with analog remastering Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 16:38:15 -0400 I'm practicing remastering on the OSPS 10-31-86 discs, in preparation for some work on some Agent Porridge shows I'll be working on soon(check out 4/23/99 - unbelievable 3rd set!!!), and was wondering if someone could help me out with this. I'm looking to mostly do some noise reduction, not through just the EQ, but through wave inversions and such. I'm also looking for other techniques to take a decent master, 1st gen, or 2nd gen source tape and clean up the noise, bring out the clarity, and reconstruct some of the highs without overemphasizing the "washiness" that a lot of these tapes have. FWIW, my main audio editing program is Sound Forge 4.5. thanks, Aaron -- ==================================================== Aaron J. Um, where do you think the polarity is stored? It's one of the 16 bits. What you've described is 17 bit sampling. >> The polarity is a separate signal that denotes signal zero crossing and might be considered a control 'bit' . . . . a bit depth 'free' feature. I was under the assumption that the polarity control bit was not counted with the A/D converter bit depth of peak signals. I would see this a more truthful or realistic specification and would call what Drew suggested a 15 bit convertor with a polarity bit and not a 16 bit convertor. But this is me and I'm much more experienced with analog, acoustics, and systems engineering than having much to do with A/D D/A digital block audio applications and their standards of specification. However, the general considerations discussed remain the same for any 12 to 24+ bit depth conversion process. So I may be off by a factor of 2 in actual digitization levels of a particular converter, I don't see this changing the premise of my argument. However, you're correct in questioning if zero crossing is included as a Data bit. It technically really shouldn't be but may serve to be named as such to avoid confusion or increase it for marketing considerations. This is instead of telling the truth as being a 15 bit with polarity. All convertors are basically unipolar devices that can only digitize one polarity that's starts near zero volts to some maximum voltage (or current). For such convertors to digitize signals that change polarity, a signal inverter output is switched in as input when the signal crosses zero volts. This allows the same A/D convertor to again process the signal with the unipolar read 'Full Scale bit depth' code being tagged with a reversed polarity control bit. Microphones inherently output a zero crossing audio signal. DAT Systems with dual polarity analog voltage supplies (like the D100, M1, and SBM-1), have dual polarity signals that zero cross, would be most likely to be working a full 16 or more bit depth + polarity bit thrown in as advantage to double the precision over that of a 16 bit unipolar conversion. Dual polarity supply voltages offer analog signal processing with less inherent nonlinear distortions than single supply audio processing like that found in D7/8 DAT decks. Perspective is again regained for me when I recall the many really good sounding tapes I've made just recording with a TCD-D7 deck. Anyway, this may be worth looking into as a 16 bits DAT may be a full 16 bits + polarity bit or may just be 15 bits + polarity bit. Anybody know what specification is a standard or to expect this changes 'a bit' with models of decks? From the responses I recieved, I've pretty much decieded to spend a few extra bucks and get a used Mackie 1202 mixer. My question now is......how exactly does one go about powering a mackie 1202 mixer for field use? I know people have done it. I saw a couple of other people ask the same question to the list a while back in the archives, but I didn't see any responces. Thanks again for the b/w. By the way, i'll probably be getting one of the older versions of the 1202...not the VLZ pro. Don't let the 'light jazz' moniker scare you off. These guys are incredible. They don't allow taping so you'd have to stealth it and if anyone gets a tape of these guys I'd love to get a copy. Mike
From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: asbd v daud Date: Sun, 2 May 1999 23:35:58 EDT "This artist has very few good-quality SBDs circulating. Do you choose ASBD or DAUD and why?" Why can't you have both? I know one guy who used to be able to do sbd/aud at clubs, although I guess he only had one portable DAT, so he hooked the DAT to the sdbd and then used his D5 for the aud portion, although only rarely. EG, when i first met him, and he found out I was using an ECM909LT, he hooked it up to his D5 so I could get a channel of the aud version (Buffalo Tom) while using his DAT for the sbd. I would choose the asbd because I woulda ssume _someone_ in the crowd was using DAT to record. I always assume that every show (in a venue of 800 or more) will have at least 4 people recording stealth, and at least two of them will use a form of digital media (DAT or PCM). xox mike

From: KindTaper@aol.com Subject: ISO: Taper Tickets for 4 Phish shows... Date: Mon, 3 May 1999 00:10:16 EDT I know this is somewhat early, but I wanted to go ahead and try: I was dead broke at the beginning of April. I had a ton of bills coming and no money to pay them. The last thing I could think about buying with the little bit of money I did have was tickets. Things are a little better now, but unfortunately, I had to skip mail order. This was bad, but I had no choice, and now I have to search for taper tickets for Nashville, both Atlanta shows and Charlotte. I only need 1 ticket for each night. I can offer cash, a patch in which I can carry in your stuff and/or run your deck for you, which could be a plus for you if you don't want to worry about taping any or all of these nights, I can put you first in the chain and take care of your tapes for you. I can also offer cd's or dats of any or all 4 nights right after the shows, and even copies of all three nights of Phil and Friends or whatever is necessary within reason. I would hate to not be able to see any shows this tour, cause after hearing the Phil and Friends tapes, we are in for a fun summer. If anyone can help, please e-mail me. thanks, Wes---Kindtaper@aol.com

I'm a unidecker and I am currently saving for a second deck so I can do digital trades.. However, until then I can just tape shows and collect them via B&P's and 2:1's... So i'm wondering if there are some kind people out there who would be interested in spinning a few B&P's or 2:1's for me? I just bought 10 of the unbranded Maxell HS4 DDS 60m tapes and would love to send them out for some shows... HOWEVER... As much as I appreciate generosity, I just wanted to say that I'm *NOT* interested in any of the following: Phish, GD, DMB, PMB, MMW, STI, and other Jam bands... I just am not into Jam bands... I'd be interested in just about anything else however (Ani Difranco, Tori, Metallica, Stabbing Westward, GLU, Orbital, Orb, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Tool, Aphex Twin, Depeche Mode, KMFDM, etc..) Thanks! And sorry for filling up the bandwhith.. -Steve
