From: "Rob Linxweiler" <roblinx@enteract.com> Subject: MerleFest Grovel Reply-To: roblinx@enteract.com Date: Tue, 04 May 1999 19:39:05 -0500 Hello... or should I say Howdy? Freshly abuzz with the vibe of my second MerleFest. Looking for any and all recordings. If you've got 'em, but aren't into starting a tree, perhaps I can help. I have plenty to trade, and would be willing to help organize a tree to get copies of this show. Russ Perry? Are you out there? I'll send my list if you're interested in a trade, but please don't sit on these wonderful tapes! Thanks, Rob Linxweiler

From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re: Damn bit argument Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 19:17:12 -0700 "In reality, normalizing the signal, to put it bluntly, makes it worse. (I was about to say farks it up, but we don't swear here). Try taking the picture of the 1 cm graph paper with 10 squares, then fit it into one with 13 squares at 0.77 cm size. Yeah... take the already jagged picture, and redraw it. See if it gets even better." The above example does not appear to be a correct representation of what (digi)normalization does since the ampitude afterwords is the same as before. A more appropriate example would be. 1. Your (simplified)dat recorder is capable of resolving 20, 1 cm blocks. 2. You have a recording whose highest peak only fills up 10, 1 cm blocks. Do you ..... A. Live with it and turn up your stereo upon playback to get the desired listening loudness. or B. Normalize it in the digital domain so that the highest peak now fills up 20, 1cm blocks and you don't need to turn up your stereo as high upon playback to get the desired listening loudness. I don't know how "accurate" diginormalization processes are(IE are they a true "scale up" or are other artifacts now entering the equation), but I would think/hope in this day and age that they are pretty close to dead on. If that's the case then a tape whose levels are substantially low could benefit from a diginormalization since less analog amplification (which introduces noise) is needed upon playback to get to the desired listening loudness....Pete (...I've never A/B'd the above scenario but rather throw this out to see how others feel...the main idea is that (a mathematical)amplification in the digital domain is cleaner to the ear than amplification in the analog domain).
From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Fostex CR-300 and HHB CDR-850 CD recorders both in stock Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 21:19:47 -0700 The DAT Store now has both models of Pioneer's 3rd generation Pro CD Recorder in stock: the Fostex and HHB. These units are exactly the same except for the front-panel color: Fostex is off white and HHB is dark purple. Your choice, $994. These are clearly the best stand-alone CD recorders in the industry. Here are some of the features: * Designed to record on the cheap "computer" discs, including new 80 minute discs. * SCMS-free, will copy any audio CD or CDR. * Optical, Coaxial, and AES/EBU digital inputs & outputs. * RCA and XLR analog inputs and outputs. * Starts recording instantly. Makes exact copies with "1-Sync" or "All-Sync". * All-Sync also has Auto-Finalize and Auto-Edit modes. * Never stops recording during your music! Can be set to stop on total silence: never, instantly, or after 10 seconds. * Automatically converts DAT start_ID's and MD_indexes to CD track marks. * Automatic or manual sample rate converter. * Separate left & right record level controls, good metering, separate left & right margin indicators. * CDRW (erasable) compatible: erase a whole disc or the last track. * Digital fader. * Rack-mount ends can be removed. * Wireless remote included, wired remote also possible. * Separate analog & digital power supplies, circuit boards for best sound quality. From: CK <toen0013@tc.umn.edu> Subject: 7-pin to DATport cable? Date: Wed, 05 May 1999 11:33:32 -0500 Thanks for all the replies about the DATport. I did order one today from Sam Ash (1-800-4-SAMASH) for $149.99 (plus shipping). VERY nice price. :) Now I need to pick up a cable that will allow me to plug my Sony D7 (with the 7-pin Sony standard) into the DATport. I don't know exactly what kind of connector the DATport has, but I think it's an S/PDIF RCA jack? I know I can find this cable for as much as $150 but I'd like the cheapest one possible. I'm not doing professional work here so I'm not too concerned about a little diginoise here and there.. I can always transfer it again if I have any problems. :) Any and all emails are appreciated.. Thanks! -Steve
From: Theo Forbath <forbath@ncri.com> Subject: any interest in a tree of the Shakti Reunion tour? Date: Wed, 05 May 1999 14:26:54 -0400 hi, being a huge John Mclaughlin fan, and knowing there are others on dat-heads who also enjoy Shakti and McLaughlin, i thought that i would try to spear-head a tree of the US tour they are doing. i tried to find a schedule for it online, but had no luck :( i have the boston and NYC shows covered with Schoeps, and am looking to hook up with anyone else who is willing to tape shows in their area. i will then put together a tree of all the shows we get for anyone who taped a show and others who are interested. so please ping me if you want to participate in this tree. the tour is in June. if you find a site with the complete tour listing, please let me know! btw, if it is the $$ that are holding you back from going, or from getting the best seat in the house, get in touch! if you are not familiar with Shakti, they are one of the premier blends of jazz and Indian music! thanks, t.

If the normalization involves multiplying by an integer, then there's no problem; everything is amplified equally (including the quantization noise). However, that's rare; normally, it involves multiplying by some random-looking number. As a result, the products cannot be exactly represented in 16 bits, and there will be some further roundoff (quantization) noise added. (NB: The new noise will be around 96dB down from the now full-level signal.) The relative dissonance caused by this noise versus that caused by turning your amplifier (preamp, actually) to a higher amplification level depends on the quality of your analog equipment, and is beyond the scope of this mailing list. If you're doing any digital processing, such as equalization, use 24 or 32 bits for that; then normalizing afterwards won't hurt any (in this case, it will help). Seth
From: "Kent Borg" <kentborg@my-dejanews.com> Subject: Mic Handling Noise Date: Wed, 05 May 1999 15:04:11 -0700 This might not be applicable to those who record loud rock concerts, but it *is* on topic of DAT... I recently bought some AT933s (including that little shotgun head, all as packaged by www.soundprofessionals.com) and a Sony M1 (that Klay sold me). My purpose is low-budget location recording for video. I am wondering how to minimize mic handling noise. Anyone have good, inexpensive, tough, flexible mounting solutions they can share? Thanks, -kb, the Kent who already knows about gaffers's tape and so is heading for a toy store after work looking for ideas in industructable plastic construction toys, and maybe a even cute (discount) plush toy he might skin for wind sock use. ======= Sent via Deja News, The Discussion Network ======= http://www.dejanews.com/ Easy access to 50,000+ discussion forums
