I bought a new Sony TDC-D100 DAT recorder early this year so I could
tape the Neil Young LA and Vegas shows. When I purchased the unit, I
intended to buy 90METER tapes, but was sold 90MINUTE tapes. Not
experienced enough to catch the mistake, I was unprepared and only taped
the first set of the first show. I thought it was operator error in a
different sense, so I was extra cautious the next time only to find the
same problem. FInally, I got it right and taped the last show in Vegas
successfully by doing the old tape swap! Now I know better.
My question is, where can I get the 90METER DATs that provide 3 hours
and 3 minutes of recording time? I've looked but couldn't find them.
What are the pro's and con's? I heard lengthy tapes even in SP mode may
be harmful to the mechanics of the recorder.

Would there be any problems with cloning a dat in the following manner?
PCM-M1-> digital in card on a PC
Digital out on PC ->PCM-M1
This should be a perfect clone, right?
I'm just too poor to spring for a 2nd dat deck right now, and I need to get
a dig in card for CDrs anyhow..

That depends on the card. If it's one that forces resampling, then it
won't be a clone. If it just takes the bits and writes them to disk
(and vice-versa), then you should get a clone.

For our purposes, 24 bits is plenty, and I wouldn't be on my ability
to pass a double-blind test if 20 bits were used. (That is, use 20
bits and 32 bits, and see if someone can hear the difference.)

Simple explanation: we now have a signal that's accurately represented
with >16 bits. We want to represent it with 16 bits as accurately as
we can. There are several choices:
1. Round each sample. This is simple, but doesn't sound optimal.
2. Add random dither. This sounds better.
3. Do (intelligent) noise-shaping. This sounds better still.
Basically: take the signal we end up representing with 16 bits.
Subtract the original many-bit signal. The difference is the error.
With rounding, the error will always be <1/2 lsb, and average 1/4 lsb,
but will tend to correlate with the signal.
With dither, the error will always be <1 lsb, and average <1/2 lsb
(that depends on the "shape" of the dither, 1/3 lsb is common) but
will not correlate with the signal. This sounds better.
With intelligent noise-shaping, the error may be as high as 2 lsb
(depending on the algorithm), but the claim of the algorithm-
designers is that the noise signal will have minimum audibility
(e.g. its spectrum will concentrate in those frequencies that the
human ear is least sensitive to).
Consider a sine wave whose peak amplitude is just under 1/2 lsb.
Rounding will turn it to 0. With dither, some fraction of the samples
(more of the ones at peak amplitude than any of the others) will be
set to +-1. The spectrum of that signal will show the original sine
wave, with some random noise. Intelligent noise-shaping will show the
original sine wave, with some noise at less-audible frequencies (SBM).

OK I just purchased a sonic port from USBSTuff and the sent the wrong one
(optical vs. spdif) . They are telling me that they are out of them and will
not have the spdif one in for two weeks. Their web page says that they do
have them. I paid by Check so i am out the $250.00. I talked to a rep at usb
before I ordered and she said they had it in stock. So now I am waiting for
a call back from "someone with authority". Everyone makes mistakes but It is
how you rectify them that sets you apart. I will let the list know how they
solve it, and how long it takes.
Sorry for the lack of dat content.

it. Can you guys help me out? What should I look for when buying as used
deck? What should I ask? What problems with this deck or in general should
I look out for?(scms, inputs/outputs, head life, transport, recording from
mics, etc...) What advantages does this have over an M-1, or vice versa?

hoping to pool some of the recources from the greatest forumn for live
tapers/ live music collectors in the world...
i am helping organize a special project for the end of the millenium...

this will be a New Years Tree of all past 12/31 shows done by the Dead and
selected others...(ABB and Hot Tuna are already included and there will be
others) please e-mail me with your suggestions...
currently collecting seeds...an announcement will be forthcoming when we are
ready to go ahead with this thing...
if you have anything that may be of interest that you think should be
included, please let me know and we'll work something out...
looking for DAT or CDR clones, as close to the Analog Masters as possible,
etc...
DSBDs or DAUDS...
of course quality is important, but some of the older shows just don't
circulate in high quality, (or at all!) and we may have to edit or do
without a few of these if copies just can't be found...(for example, we have
GD 12/31/71 on a partial CDR and complete Gen 1 cassettes as the show is not
thought to exist on DAT)...prove me wrong?...;-)/
completeness of show is a priority as well...
here is a short list of what we are looking for at the moment...
Grateful Dead:
12/31...
'78, '79, '80, '82, '83, '84, '85, '87, '88.
Others:
12/31/66 (questionable GD content),
12/31/67 (actually a Jefferson Airplane show)
12/31/68
we're also on the lookout for that special show done by someone outside the
immediate "Dead Family" of bands...please help out with your rare,
uncirculated, or under circulated shows...
