When writing to CDR, you have (typically) a 3-second memory buffer, but PC>audio typically gives you much less buffering, and as for input, basically there is no margin for error (if the cpu isn't ready for a byte of data, it will be lost). So at a minium, you'd have to listen while the entire copy is being made to be sure it's correct. At least, for the first 5-10 clones on any new computer system. --G

From: nickh@wordcraft.co.uk (Nick Hickman) Subject: Re: Cloning via digital sound card Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 12:30:12 +0000 >Would there be any problems with cloning a dat in the following manner? > >PCM-M1-> digital in card on a PC >Digital out on PC ->PCM-M1 > >This should be a perfect clone, right? It should be, but it isn't always so. In addition to cards that re-sample, I was disappointed to discover that the Event Electronics cards (Gina and, I believe although haven't tested, Layla) also manage to change the data that they record. If the recording application requests 24 bits from the card, then all is well and the data is passed through unchanged. If, however, the application requests 16 bits (as would be usual when recording at 16 bit resolution), then the Event cards apparently interpret the incoming data as being 24 bits wide and re-quantise down to 16 bits. Thus, the 16 bits that get to the application are not the 16 bits that came into the digital input because of the addition of dither noise. I have attempted to convince Event that this matters and should be corrected but appear to have failed. In practice, it probably doesn't matter very often. If, however, you needed digital silence to remain as digital silence, or wanted to preserve any fancy shaped dither on the source, then it would be bad news. I'd be interested in knowing which PC cards definitely absolutely positively pass data transparently. Nick

From: Robbie Dunn <goheels@mindspring.com> Subject: KVHW update Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 11:40:06 -0700 Unfortunately it looks like Ray White is no longer playing with KVHW. According to a statement from the remaining members of KVHW on http://www.kvhw.com/dates.html "Ray White will not be playing with KVHW. At this time, he has other priorities. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to the time when we will share the stage with him again." For those that haven't heard KVHW, you need to check out some of their music. In their short time together as a band, they played some outstanding shows, and seemed to be getting better every day. Robbie

Anyone do >> anything like this or have other ideas? Good luck. I've had this problem so many times, I can't even count them, in both public meetings and demonstrations. I've tried fluo red cables, without any success. People don't even look in front of them anyway, and even when I try to warn them all I get is a stupid glare at me while they completely fail to give the faintest hint of care. Passing right between the camera and the person being interviewed is a big success too. Oh yeah, and also wanting _absolutely_ to be where the boom, or the mixette-camera cable, happens to be. Kids are the best at that, but quite a few adults are pretty good performers too. Only real solution : buy a pitbull (fairly effective), or watch carefully around you to foresee any harmful event and make it absolutely clear that you _won't_ allow people to approach your stuff. Being polite (just a bit), but firm (extremely), is the only conceivable behaviour in this instance. With time you will develop the required eye in the back of your head. The only thing that works for me. I hope this can help, Jean-Luc.
