Subject: misaligning decks to recover a "blank" DAT

First off, thanks to everybody who posted and emailed me about the ASBD vs
DAUD question. Of the approx. 10 responses I received, everybody voted for
the ASBD. Some willingly shared hints on getting the best performance from
the classic analog portables. DATheads is a great forum and wonderful
resource.
Onto the subject...I had my first "blank tape"/"misload" experience with my
D8 tonight. Since I was obtaining a board feed under very difficult
cirumstances, I couldn't check on the deck nor do any of the standard
checks to avoid this. (I'll find a way next time, though!) ABS time
incremented, the tape moved. The dead giveaway was the 90 meter tape got
caught in the mechanism and slightly 'munched on the way out. I rule out
dirty heads or outright failure since just minutes before, and then two
hours later, the deck laid down a great recording (onto other, 60m blanks).
I believe we covered this months back. Conclusion was that the info is
recorded on the tape, just way off-spec (due to the way the tape travelled
thru the mechanism.) One person said they misaligned a deck to play back
the tape and get a good playable clone. I did a similar thing once years
ago, and it worked great but no longer have access to the equipment to
restore proper alignment when I'm done.
Does anyone offer this service? Maybe a repair center that has decks open?
or somebody that has the know-how and just a little too much time on their
hands or likes a challenge. Willing to pay a reasonable price or ?? to get
a good clone of my mystery DAT.
thanx for the space,
Keith

I've had this problem for years. Outdoor Dead shows were the Worst!
I always hated the drunks steadying themselves on the stand as they
hobbled past.
The only thing you can do is to set two or three stands together and make
a little 'camp' at the bases with packs, decks, etc and gaurd it like
hell. I always appreciated the way that tapers look out for each other.
I don't know How many times I had another taper turn on a flashlight on my
deck right before someone's foot was to come down on it.
I agree. Be firm but polite. Try to leave an area that is free for
foot traffic and keep people from needing to tramp through your stand.
Countless times I have had people try to step Over my stand even though I
have made every attempt to keep an alternate path open. 'I have to go
through there' blah, blah. 'No you don't'.

Howdy, all...
Anticipating the outdoor shows coming up, I'm going to need to get some
windscreens for my AKG C3000 mics. Any suggestions? Are there different
levels of windscreens? I'm really new to outdoor taping, so if anyone has
any advice or suggestions, I'd appreciate it...
Also, just out of curiosity, what do you do if it's raining? I've heard
that you can use an umbrella, but doesn't that create noise near the
mics?
Thanks,
Joe

I've also felt that analog domain processing might come up as an option to
digital process for certain functions.
One example that's close to home is using that RNC (analog) compressor for
easier or just nicer sounding analog domain processing.
While converting from digital to analog and then back to digital seems a bit
crazy, it only takes having two DAT decks. One DAT to play the recording and
provide analog output to the RNC or any other analog domain process device.
The second DAT deck is making a LINE-IN to DAT recording of the analog
processed sound. Doing it this way, all effects and processing is done in a
much higher resolution analog domain and then converted back into digital
after doing necessary tweaks.
The advantage I see here is real time monitoring of compression, filtering,
and other effects with analog quality processing that cannot degrade or
invoke the digital resolution issues recently discussed here.
On the other hand, I seem to remember that DAW software like Cool Edit Pro
Version 1.1 works with converting to at least 24 bit depth for all audio
conversions. This feature comes with selectable dither depth and type of
dither desired for bringing the audio back to 16 bits.
DAW editing programs working with 24-32 bit or increased bit depth for all
processing of common 16 bit material may allow use of digital processing
software to be very transparent to overall audio quality.

I use an AKG KM-212 Studio Boom (and try to get someone else to carry it
whenever possible!) The base is black, I've wrapped each leg with a stripe
of yellow electrical tape so it appears to be black and yellow (CAUTION!)
striped (May even pass an OSHA inspection, too!)

You could try glow tape, but that has to be "charged" every so often with
a flashlight. There's the yellow and black striped hazard tape, also,
which is more practical. Both can be found at

1. As some of you already know, I have a librarian who's got an extra to sell.
2. I won't get any of the money--a cash-strapped private school will get
money for it's library.
3. Would anyone who has purchased a card catalog please email me and tell me
what they've paid. Or, if you've been thinking about it, how much would you
say is fair? All responses I've received have asked me how much, rather than
making an offer as I'd hoped, and I don't know what's a fair starting point.
4. It's four drawers by five or six, I think (don't remember), and wood, and
sturdy and clean. Not antique, but a few decades old. Chicago area.
