Hey guys,
I have some DAT's that I've either converted to CD myself or have
received conversions of from friends. I would _really_ like to trade these
away - I'm a unidecker so situations such as these are pretty much the only
chance I have to actually _trade_ for shows rather than groveling all over
the place. I'll let some go B&P if necessary though.

I have the opportunity to purchase a Sony PCM2700A which has supposedly
been used for under 10 hours.
1) Does anybody have one of these machines. What are they like for
reliability?
2) Is there any way you can tell the number of hours the head has been
used for on this machine.
3) The output from the coax digital port is IEC958 Type 1. I know that
this means I will be unable to clone to a consumer unit expecting a Type
1 signal, but does anyone know what will happen if I pass the signal
into a Linn Numerik DAC?
Your help will be gratefully received.

Amazingly, this doesn't seem to be answered in the FAQ.
DDS 1 and DAT are very similar specs, and the tapes are
interchangeable.
There is no evidence that DDS tapes are more abrasive than DAT. We
know from one major manufacturer (Hitachi Maxell, if I remember
correctly) that the tape used in their DATs and DDS tapes is
identical.
The only difference of which you need to be aware is that DAT machines
often aren't happy with 90m DDS tapes. If in doubt, stick to 60m
tapes.
Otherwise, DDS tapes are a great bargain: I bought 50 at £1.90 ($3)
each.

Subject: Trey in Portland
Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 09:00:43 -0400
A couple of months ago, I bought tickets for the Trey Anastasio show in
Portland Maine that happens this Friday. When I bought them, I knew
that I wasn't going to be able to go, and, in fact, I did not even buy
myself a ticket. I bought them for my friends.
My wife is due with our fourth child on Friday, and frankly, if she had
had it two or three weeks early, one of my friends would have been
screwed and I would have been going to the show. But she is still VERY
pregnant, and it comes down to these two options: either she has the
baby between now and Friday, in which case I am not going to leave her
alone with four kids under five, or she hasn't had the baby by Friday,
in which case I can't really be 3 hours away from home...
But, none of my friends are tapers. They are all familiar with the
concept, and have seen my equipment, but do not know the slightest thing
about their use (but of course, they all want analogs...)
So, basically, I'm looking for someone that they might be able to hook
up with before the show to dish off my D8 and digi-cable to so that they
can come home with a tape for me. I will have plenty of batteries and
tapes, everything should be all set...
If this isn't possible, I will send them with my Sound Pro mics just so
I can hear it the next day, but I'd love to grab a tape from someone who
knows how to tape... I am almost guaranteed overloads and digi-static if
I let these guys run it for me...
Thanks a lot for any help anyone can offer. Oh, and if people need more
incentive, I can burn discs of many Phish or Disco Biscuits shows for
your efforts.

I've encountered this annoying problem many shows, but came up with a couple
remedies that seem to work. Keep in mind, the more mic stands you can place
near each other, the better.
First off, get some of those yellow 'glow sticks' and secure them to each
leg on the stand. They light it up enough and once they run out, the show is
long over.
Second, go to your local drum shop and check out the accessories. Drum
Workshop and Latin Percussion make small 'tables' that clamp on to hi-hat
stands. The drummer has to put the brew SOMEWHERE! The D8 w/ a SBM fits very
nicely onto it. Its padded and now the deck is at chest high level and no
ass hole can step on it. Buy 2 and put your beer on that lower shelf. Also,
drop some $$ and get a good stand.
Hoping this helps you out.

American-Digital has an excellent price on 80 minute CDRs. They
come on a spindle for only $1.39. These, like many CDRs have a
blank silver top. If you have any Taiyo Yuden, Sony or newer Imation
CDRs you will recognize the unmistakable aqua-blue record surface.
We also just received Digital Audio 80 minute CDRs. Same as the
above CDRs, but for use in consumer CD recorders like the Philips,
Marantz or Pioneer. The price on those are $2.49 on a spindle.
For those doing the "swap trick" on the 870/880s you can purchase
the 80 min. Audio discs and use to "swap" with the data 80 min CDR.
They have the exact same record surface (if that really matters).
