TREE DEADLINE -- May 28th, 1999 @ 11:59 pm
The show is composed of 2 cd-rs, an early set and a late set.
Send the form below back to baba666@aol.com to sign up, with the subject of
your message listing the position you wish to be in on the tree and how many
copies you're able to make, for example:
Zony Mash CD-R BRANCH (7) -- I'd love to see a lot of these! ;-)
Zony Mash CD-R BRANCH (3)
Zony Mash CD-R LEAF (0)
A note about leaves: the number of leaf positions available depend on the
number of branch applications I get. If we get more leaf applications then
there are positions, the postitions will be filled on a first-come,
first-served basis. If you are unfortunately left off the tree, I can't
personally burn a copy for you, nor can I set you up with someone who can.
The moral of this story is if you can sign up as a branch, please do so!
The second moral of the story is that Zony Mash is a taper friendly band! Go
see them! Tape them with the best equipment you can get your hands on! It's
SOOOOO worth it!
This is a not-for-profit CD-r tree. If participants choose to send blank data
CD-rs and return postage instead of trading, that is their prerogative.

Anyone tape Toto this Sunday (5/9/99) at Slim's?? I screwed up and missed about
30 minutes in the middle part so would appreciate if anyone out there has a
complete copy. The show was pretty cool; awesome musicians with some really
crappy music from time to time :) Hey what can I say; flashbacks are cool
sometimes. These guys play big arena's in Europe and can barely sell out Slim's
in the USA. Good to see a big act like that have some fun in a small venue.

Only real solution : buy a pitbull (fairly effective), or watch carefully
around you to foresee any harmful event and make it absolutely clear that
you _won't_ allow people to approach your stuff. Being polite (just a bit),
but firm (extremely), is the only conceivable behaviour in this instance.
With time you will develop the required eye in the back of your head. The
only thing that works for me.
==========================================================================
Politeness usually works for all but the most drunken of offenders, but some folks just don't
get the idea of not yammering at full volume to their friends at a show they paid $20.00 to hear
but refuse to listen to. Even the use of highly directional mics will not help save your tape
from these people, and the only answer is to get them off to the side or behind the mics. I try
to give the oblivious chatterer or clueless three polite requests to move away or be quiet, but
then the gloves come off. ;) The truly stuporous can be physically carried out of the taper pit.
I prefer the "guard the boom" approach, especially at larger club & GA shows. In all but the
heaviest of crowds, three tapers at the appropriate corners can effectively herd the crowd away
from the critical footprint of the stand, merely by taking a few steps to either side, or dancing
madly inside of their personal space. They _will_ move away. This does require that you think
like a sheepdog instead of a sheep, and the barking thing will scare off even the really drunk.
Become your own pitbull, as it were . . . <g> Set empty cases & backpacks to cut off obvious
aisles & to route traffic movements around your space, rather than through the middle of it. A
good high intensity flashlight is also a handy item . . . ;)
Even this will not save you from the truly obtuse . . . As an example: Friday night in Austin,
Tx, large drunken crowd, an oblivious frat boy walked right through the space between two booms
(about 2' maximum), grabbing one for support & nearly sending both to the ground. Sounds really
good on the tape, BTW. :/ Thanks a lot, bubba, whoever you are! (all sarcasm filters set to 11)
We quickly checked for damage to the gear, looking for pulled out cables a/o footprints on the
deck <gasp>/etc., while keeping the guy there, didn't find any so we released him into the crowd.
If he had stomped anything, we'd have gotten his drivers license # and maybe a credit card for
future reference & payment for damages. We weren't hostile or threatening, but very firm, and
weren't letting him go until we were satisfied that he hadn't damaged anything.
Do all you can to physically restrict folks from your gear, play "heads up" ball, and set up in
the cluster format w/ other tapers when possible, so that you have several sets of eyes watching
the central pile of gear & boomstands. And even then . . .watch out! :)

I was running my rig with heavy foam windscreens, and was rather surprised
to find once i got home that despite the mics being a little bit wet
(due to water seeping through the foam), that there was no noise on
the wape from the inclement weather, other than an occaisional blast of
wind and the horrendous crackle and pop when the PA bit down...
===================================================
A bit of gaff tape over the top of the connection between the mic body & the cable will allow
the water to roll out, rather than enter the mic. You should also cover any holes in the mic
body, say where the bass rolloff or pad switches are, and then run the mics slightly tip down.
This allows any water the chance to roll through the outer layers of the open cell foam, and drip
off the tip of the mic. A hair net over the windscreen will allow even less of the rain into the
foam - it looks alarming, but the water collects on the netting rather than the surface of the
foam.
Wring out the foam & dry them later. Old film sound trick . . . "Ready when you are CB!" ;)
Now where did I put those ziplock bags & the silica gell packs? Summer is a comin' in . . . :)

"Hey any of you heard of or used a 7 pin>>USB for an SOny PCM-M1>>>Computer??
will this work correctly??"
Currently, you can't go directly from/to a dat deck to/from a computer USB port
without an "interface box". Current choices include the Opcode datport (coax
in, coax out), the Opcode Sonicport (coax in, coax out, as well as 1/8" stereo
jack analog in and out), or the Sonicport optical (toslink in, toslink out, as
well as 1/8" stereo analog in/out). Once you have the box, then you need to buy
the appropriate cable (for the M1 either 7pin/coax or 7pin/toslink depending on
which box you buy)Perhaps in the future dat decks or whatever the next recording
technology that comes along, will have this capability built into them thus
eliminating the need for a separate box...Pete (assuming of course that
something else hasn't come along by then to replace USB).

Hi,
I taped Henry Rollins at the Coach house on Saturday. The tape has a
few flaws in the beginning but is otherwise nice. I also taped Beck on
4-9-99 at the WilternTheatre. The Beck tape is one of my best masters.
I recorded it from the 6th row right by the right stacks. The Beck show
was absolutely amazing. Both shows were recorded with a M1>CSBmod.

"Onto the subject...I had my first "blank tape"/"misload" experience with my
D8 tonight."...."The dead giveaway was the 90 meter tape got
caught in the mechanism and slightly 'munched on the way out."
A snagged tape upon trying to eject suggests it was seated way off during the
record process. As an experiment try previewing the tape (FF+Play). Sometimes
a "blank tape" will be listenable in preview mode (thus indicating that there is
indeed data/music stored on the tape). This type of tape I think is
recoverable. Unfortunately in the instance of D7/D8 snaggage upon eject/blank
tape I think you're S.O.L. There may or may not be data/music on the tape but
even if there is I don't think all the tweeking of the dat deck in the world
will retrieve it. If there is data written on the tape, to get to it would
probably require getting the tape to misload again (like it was during the time
of the recording).
"I believe we covered this months back. Conclusion was that the info is
recorded on the tape, just way off-spec (due to the way the tape travelled
thru the mechanism.)"
In the case of D7/D8 snaggage upon eject/blank tape. I don't know if there is
data written. If there is its gonna be difficult to get at. In the case where
you have a "blank tape" (but no snaggage upon eject), I think the odds of
recovering the tape are much better by tweeking the dat deck(especially if it
"previews" music).
"One person said they misaligned a deck to play back
the tape and get a good playable clone."
Probably wasn't one of the "snaggage upon eject tapes".
"Does anyone offer this service? Maybe a repair center that has decks open?"
I don't think so, but someone should. Perhaps the Oades? I think there are
plenty of "blank tapes" that could be recovered(just a tracking/alignment
thing). However the D7/8 snaggage ones would probably much more difficult/not
possible. I think any tape that previews music (but plays blank) could be
recovered without too much effort If you're curious what type of "dat-deck
tweeking" may recover a "blank tape" check out V4#413 "more on tracking and
alignment".

ps-thanks a lot Seth and Alex for your recent input on the whole "damn bit
argument". Excellent, easy to understand posts and summary(these are usually
easier said than done). Now we just need a high quality, 2 channel, true 20 bit
or higher (preferably 24 bit) affordable media which we can write to from a
computer....what's up with 2 channel DVDR anyways?

Don't think this was mentioned as an option:
1. A motorcycle 12V battery(thats plenty for a show, but if you're on tour for
extended time without much access to an outlet to charge then get a larger
marine battery).
2. An invertor(12VDC in, 120 VAC out).
3. A charger to charge 1 after use.
4. Your mackie mixer with its power cord.
Start packin the mule train!....Pete (so are the Mackie VLZ Pro mic preamps
really that much better the the VLZ mic preamps?)

Sorry for the lack of dat content. Can anyone recommend a good program for
burning CDR's, specifically one that makes it easy to do track marks. I've
been using Easy CD Creator Lite that came with my Plextor 8/20, but with it
you have to copy tracks (I copy and paste from Soundforge XP), which is time
consuming. There's gotta be a good, cheap program that allows you to specify
where you want to put track marks in time. Also, are there any CD-R's that
will reliably give more than 74 minutes? (I have one show that's just barely
over 74 min., and the Maxell CDR's I'm using hold no more than 74 min.).
